Together, they can make replacing a watch or changing phones less of a setup chore—but they do not promise a perfect copy of every app, credential or health record.
What is Wear OS 4’s game-changing feature?
Google introduced cloud backup and restore with Wear OS 4 so supported watches can save watch data and settings to a Google Account and restore them when setting up another supported watch. Google announced the capability on May 10, 2023, and Wear OS 4 became stable with the Pixel Watch 2 on October 4, 2023. Google’s Wear OS 4 announcement and the stable release announcement describe the platform changes.
A related feature transfers relevant Wear OS data from an existing watch to a new phone. That is a different job from restoring a backup onto a replacement watch: one changes the phone paired to the watch, while the other sets up a new watch. Google’s developer guide to transferring to a new mobile device describes the phone-transfer capability.
What can transfer—and what is not guaranteed?
On supported devices, Google’s backup documentation says Wear OS can back up app data and settings; watch faces, tiles and complications associated with Wear OS apps are also among the supported data. The exact result depends on the watch, app and implementation. This is a way to carry supported setup forward, not a bit-for-bit clone of the old watch. Google’s cloud backup and restore documentation explains the device and app qualifications.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Potentially restored: supported app data and settings, watch faces, tiles and complications.
- May require separate setup: payment cards, LTE/eSIM service, credentials and manufacturer-specific settings. Do not assume these are included in a watch backup.
- Health information: distinguish information stored locally by a watch app from data synchronized to Fitbit, Google Health, Samsung Health or another account-based service. A watch backup is not a substitute for checking that service’s own sync or export options.
- Unsupported or oversized app backups: an app must support backup. Google specifies a 25 MB per-app limit; if an app’s backup exceeds it, partial backups are not supported, so that app’s data is not backed up.
Which watches support backup and transfer?
Running Wear OS 4 or newer is not, by itself, a guarantee that every watch offers the same backup, restore or transfer flow. Google says the cloud backup feature is for supported devices and specifically documented Pixel Watch and Pixel Watch 2 support in its 2023 announcement. Check the watch maker’s current instructions for the exact model and software version.
- Pixel Watch and Pixel Watch 2: Google documents the backup, restore and phone-transfer steps below.
- Samsung Galaxy Watch models: do not assume Google’s Pixel menus apply. Samsung may handle parts of backup and restoration through its own software and services; consult Samsung’s guidance for the model and phone combination.
- Other Wear OS watches: confirm support with the manufacturer rather than inferring it from the Wear OS version alone.
Wear OS 4 is based on Android 13, but its introduction of cloud backup does not establish a complete 2026 compatibility list. The relevant question is whether your particular watch and its companion app support the workflow now.

- Tap Google → Backup → Turn on.
- Close and reopen the app, then check that a recent backup time appears.
- When setting up a replacement Pixel Watch, choose the backup you want to restore.
- Enter the old watch’s passcode if prompted, keep the new watch on its charger, and tap OK.
Google says the watch can automatically restore supported apps, data, settings, watch face and tiles. Follow the prompts for any items that require fresh sign-in or configuration. See Google’s Pixel Watch backup and restore instructions for the current flow.
Transfer an existing Pixel Watch to a new phone
This is the phone-change workflow, not the replacement-watch restore process. Google’s Pixel Watch instructions say the watch unpairs from the old phone only after transfer succeeds.
- On the watch, swipe down and tap Settings → System → Transfer watch.
- On the old phone, open the Google Pixel Watch app and tap System → Transfer watch → Start Transfer → Done.
- On the new phone, open the Google Pixel Watch app and follow the setup steps.
- Confirm the pairing code on both devices and sign in to the same Google Account if prompted.
- Tap Done. Allow extra time if watch faces are still synchronizing.
If you use LTE/eSIM, check whether the new phone has the same number and follow the carrier prompts; service may need confirmation or reactivation. Google documents the transfer and number-related considerations at its Pixel Watch support page.

Which workflow fits your situation?
| Situation | What to use |
|---|---|
| New watch, same phone | Cloud backup and restore, if both the device and workflow are supported. |
| Same watch, new phone | Watch-to-phone transfer, if supported. |
| New watch and new phone | Set up the phone and watch, then restore a supported watch backup if available; follow the maker’s instructions for the order. |
| Switching watch brands | Do not assume a full cross-brand restoration. Check both manufacturers’ support guidance. |
| Wear OS 3 watch | Do not assume it can use Wear OS 4’s cloud backup merely because you are changing phones. |
Google explicitly distinguishes cloud restoration to a new watch from transferring Wear OS data to a new mobile device in its backup and restore documentation.
How automatic backup works
For automatic Wear OS backups, Google lists four conditions: the watch is charging, connected to Wi-Fi (even if it has LTE), signed in to a Google Account, and at least 24 hours have passed since the previous backup. Unlike some phone backup systems, the watch does not also need to be idle. These are platform conditions; the maker’s implementation and app support still matter. Google’s developer documentation also explains the per-app storage limit.
If backup or transfer does not work
No backup appears
- Check that the specific watch supports the feature and runs Wear OS 4 or newer.
- Confirm the watch is connected to Wi-Fi, charging and signed in to the intended Google Account.
- Update the watch software and companion app, then close and reopen the app.
- Allow time for the initial backup; Google says Pixel Watch backup may take up to a few days.
Some app data is missing
Restoration depends on app support. Google’s 25 MB per-app limit also means an oversized app backup is not partially saved. Check the app’s own account sync or export options for data it does not restore.

Pairing still requires setup or a reset
Do not treat transfer as a universal way to avoid factory reset. Google documents the no-reset transfer flow for supported Pixel Watch phone changes; replacement-watch setup and moves between brands can follow different procedures. If pairing fails, use the watch maker’s official reset and pairing instructions.
Health, payment or cellular information is absent
Check the account or service that owns the data, and follow its separate recovery process. Payment credentials and eSIM service can require fresh security checks or carrier activation; health history may live in a separate health-service account rather than in the watch backup.

It is a weaker reason to replace a watch if you rarely upgrade, already rely on a manufacturer’s backup system, or care more about battery life, sensors, GPS, LTE or health features. It is also not a sound basis for choosing a different brand unless that manufacturer confirms the restoration behavior you need. Weigh migration convenience alongside phone compatibility, health services and cellular support rather than treating it as a promise that everything will move automatically.
Verdict
Wear OS 4’s most practical “game changer” is that supported watches can make upgrades and phone changes less painful. It is a useful platform improvement, especially in the documented Pixel Watch flow, but device and app support determine what actually comes back.
