Google began distributing the Android 15-based update on March 4, 2025, and issued an April catch-up release for lagging devices and fixes. Google began rolling out the newer Wear OS 7 to eligible Pixel Watches in June 2026. Here is what 5.1 changed, which watches received it, and what to do if your update is missing.
What Wear OS 5.1 was—and when it arrived
Wear OS 5.1 is an operating-system update built on Android 15. For developers, it introduced Wear OS API level 35 and platform capabilities such as Credential Manager support. It was more than a Fitbit or Pixel Watch app refresh, but not every visible feature associated with the release came from the OS itself. Google’s Wear OS 5.1 documentation describes the platform changes.
Google announced the Pixel Watch rollout on March 4, 2025. The initial builds were BP1A.250305.019.W2 for Pixel Watch and BP1A.250305.019.W3 for Pixel Watch 2 and 3. Rollout timing varied by device and carrier. In April, Google issued build BP1A.250305.019.W8, which brought the update to some users who had missed the first wave and corrected an issue with the step-count changes. Google’s March announcement and its April update announcement list those releases.
Which Pixel Watches received Wear OS 5.1?
Google’s 2025 announcement covered supported Pixel Watch, Pixel Watch 2, and Pixel Watch 3 devices. That does not mean every model, region, or connectivity version received the update on the same day—or that every related feature works on every watch.

What changed for users
Credential Manager for compatible sign-in flows
Wear OS 5.1 added support for Android’s Credential Manager API. Apps that implement it can support sign-in flows involving passwords, passkeys, or federated accounts. This is a capability for app developers, not an automatic passkey upgrade for every watch app.
More flexible media output and controls
On watches with supported built-in-speaker media playback, compatible apps can use the Wear Output Switcher to offer the watch speaker as an output. Both the watch hardware and an app’s implementation matter; the update does not make every audio app play through the speaker.

Google’s March release also described media controls that better match the content being played, including podcast-related controls in YouTube Music. That behavior may depend on the relevant app update as well as the watch software.
Health and cycle-tracking additions were model- or app-specific
Google said Loss of Pulse Detection was expanding in the United States on Pixel Watch 3 following FDA clearance, with availability beginning toward the end of March 2025. It is not a general Wear OS 5.1 feature for every Pixel Watch: availability depends on model, country, regulatory status, connectivity, and other feature requirements. It should not be treated as a guarantee of detecting every cardiac emergency or as a substitute for medical care.

- Get up to 30 hours of battery life or up to 48 hours in Battery Saver mode[3]; plus, the new side charging dock gives you 15 hours of battery in 15 minutes or less[7]
- Train smarter with 40+ exercise modes and real-time stats on your wrist[8]; and with high-precision dual-frequency GPS, you get more accurate route tracking on runs and hikes[1]
A Fitbit app update for Pixel Watch 3 also made cycle tracking more convenient, including period logging, current-cycle status, and predictions. This was an app-level addition associated with the release, not a universal Wear OS capability.
The step-count change was later rolled back
The March update initially advertised an enhanced step-counting algorithm intended to improve tracking in situations such as pushing a shopping cart, using a wheelchair, or walking with a stroller. After users reported abnormally high counts in some scenarios, Google reverted the enhancement in the April update. If your step count changed after the March release, the April correction is relevant context.

Why an update or feature might arrive late
Google distributed Wear OS 5.1 in phases over several weeks, with timing that varied by device and carrier. LTE models could wait longer because carrier-related requirements affected release timing. Users who remained on the November 2024 software branch could receive a later April package rather than the initial March build.
A feature can also be absent even when the OS is current. Credential Manager requires compatible apps; cycle tracking and some media behavior rely on app updates; and health features can be restricted by watch model, region, regulation, or connectivity. Check Google’s March rollout information for devices that updated later alongside the relevant app’s update status.

How to check your Pixel Watch version
- Open the Google Pixel Watch app on the Android phone paired with your watch.
- Open the watch’s settings and find the system or software-update section; labels can vary with software version.
- Check for an available update. You can also open Settings on the watch and look for system version or update information to confirm the installed build.
- Compare the build number with Google’s official March 2025 and April 2025 announcements rather than relying only on the Wear OS marketing name.
Google recommends keeping the watch on its charger, connected to Wi-Fi, and at least 50% charged during an update. Installation can take under an hour, and the watch may restart and be unavailable while it completes. See Google’s Pixel Watch update guidance.
If no update appears
- Charge the watch to at least 50% and place it on its charger.
- Connect the watch to Wi-Fi, then restart both the watch and paired phone.
- Update the Pixel Watch phone app and watch apps through Google Play.
- Check again later. A phased rollout may not have reached your device or carrier yet, especially for LTE models.
- If the watch remains on an older branch, consult Google’s official update announcements for the relevant build and rollout information.
A factory reset is not the first response to a missing over-the-air update. Avoid sideloading an OTA image unless you understand the risks and are following Google’s official developer instructions.
Wear OS 5.1 versus the current Pixel Watch rollout
Wear OS 5.1 is the 2025 Android 15-based release; it is not the current major rollout in August 2026. Google began distributing Wear OS 7 to eligible Pixel Watches in June 2026. Its announcement lists build CP2A.260603.001 for LTE models and CP2A.260603.001.S1 for Bluetooth/Wi-Fi models. Availability remains dependent on device and carrier. Google highlighted improved Raise to Talk with Gemini and Remote Media Routing, which lets users manage audio and video output devices from a paired Android phone using the watch. Details are in Google’s June 2026 Wear OS 7 announcement.
If you own a Pixel Watch 1, 2, or 3, first check the software and app updates available for your particular watch; the 2025 Wear OS 5.1 release did not require buying new hardware. Whether a watch can receive a later major platform update is a separate, model-specific question.
