Google began distributing it to the original Pixel Watch and Pixel Watch 2 on September 24, 2024, then paused the rollout two days later after reports of blank or frozen screens. Google later released Wear OS 5.1 for supported Pixel Watches in March 2025.
Here is the corrected rollout timeline, compatible models, original build information, feature breakdown, update instructions, and advice for watches that are missing the update or become unusable afterward.

The short answer
The original Pixel Watch and Pixel Watch 2 were eligible for the Wear OS 5 update if they were running Wear OS 3.5 or Wear OS 4.0. Distribution was phased, so availability varied by model, carrier, region, and connectivity version.

The original rollout used these builds:
- Pixel Watch:
AW2A.240903.005.A2 - Pixel Watch 2:
AW2A.240903.005.A1
Those are historical September 2024 rollout builds, not necessarily the latest software versions for either watch today.
#1 Best Overall
- The Pixel Watch 2 comes with three new advanced sensors for heart rate tracking, skin temperature, and stress management[1,2]; 100% recycled light aluminum housing makes it comfortable to wear[3]
- The all-new heart rate sensor and Google AI combine for Fitbit’s most spot-on heart rate tracking yet[4], so you can get more precise health and fitness info[5]
- Go even longer with the enhanced 24-hour battery and always-on display[6,7]; charge for 75 minutes to get a full day of battery life[8]
- Identify potential signs of stress with Fitbit’s body-response feature, so you can manage it in the moment[5]; and track variations in your skin temperature, blood oxygen levels, and sleep to help you spot possible changes[5,9,10]
- Get help with Emergency SOS and Fall Detection if you’re feeling unsafe or if you’ve had a hard fall[11,12]; and Safety Check alerts your close contacts if you don’t respond to a set check-in timer[13]
If your watch has received later updates, you may see Wear OS 5.1 or another newer version instead. Wear OS 5.1 is based on Android 15 and is a separate platform release from the original Wear OS 5 update.
Wear OS 5 Pixel Watch rollout timeline
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| September 24, 2024 | Google began a phased Wear OS 5 rollout for the Pixel Watch and Pixel Watch 2. |
| September 26, 2024 | Google paused distribution after some owners reported blank or frozen screens after installing the update. |
| March 4, 2025 | Wear OS 5.1 was released for the Pixel Watch 2 Bluetooth/Wi-Fi model. |
| March 18, 2025 | Wear OS 5.1 was released for the original Pixel Watch variants and Pixel Watch 2 LTE. |
Google’s original announcement said the Wear OS 5 rollout would take roughly a week, with timing dependent on the device and carrier. The later pause means the first September schedule should not be treated as a guarantee that every eligible watch received the update immediately.
Which Pixel Watches were eligible?
Google’s original Wear OS 5 announcement covered:
- Google Pixel Watch
- Google Pixel Watch 2
- Bluetooth/Wi-Fi and LTE variants, subject to the applicable build and distribution channel
- Devices running Wear OS 3.5 or Wear OS 4.0
Google’s Wear OS 5.1 documentation later listed the Pixel Watch, Pixel Watch 2, and Pixel Watch 3 among supported Pixel Watch devices. That does not mean every Pixel Watch 3 feature was backported to earlier hardware. Features that depend on sensors, display characteristics, processing hardware, or newer software may remain model-specific.

What Wear OS 5 added
Google described the update as including Wear OS 5, new features, bug fixes, and performance updates. For the original Pixel Watch and Pixel Watch 2, Google also highlighted related Pixel Watch app updates delivered through Google Play:
- A grid-view app launcher
- Improved Camera controls
- Pixel Recorder functionality
These should not all be understood as features built into the operating-system image itself. A watch can receive the system update while Pixel-specific improvements still require separate Play Store app updates.
Likewise, coverage of the Pixel Watch 3 should not be used as a promise that older watches receive identical watch faces, controls, or hardware-dependent functions. The Pixel Watch 3 launched with stable Wear OS 5, but its capabilities are not a specification sheet for the original Pixel Watch or Pixel Watch 2.

Wear OS 5.1 is not simply another name for the September 2024 update. If you are checking a watch today, identify the exact installed version rather than assuming that any update labeled “Wear OS 5” refers to the original rollout.

How to check for an update
- Open Settings on the watch.
- Tap System.
- Select System updates.
- Follow the on-screen instructions if an update is offered.
Before installing a major update, put the watch on its charger, ensure it has sufficient battery, and use a stable Wi-Fi or phone connection where applicable. Keep the paired phone and Pixel Watch app updated, and expect the watch to restart. Do not interrupt an installation or remove the watch from its charger while it is updating.
What if the update is missing?
A missing notification does not automatically mean that the watch is unsupported. Google used a phased OTA rollout, and LTE and Bluetooth/Wi-Fi models could receive different builds or dates. Carrier and regional distribution could also affect availability.
Try the following:
- Check Settings → System → System updates manually.
- Confirm the model and connectivity version of the watch.
- Install pending Google Play app updates on the watch.
- Update the paired Pixel Watch app and phone.
- Wait for the official update channel rather than installing an unofficial firmware file.
Repeatedly opening the update screen should not be treated as an official way to force an OTA. If the watch remains stuck on an older version after accounting for phased availability, use Google’s official Pixel Watch support channels.

The blank-screen problem and rollout pause
The most important part of the original story is that Google paused Wear OS 5 distribution on September 26, 2024. Some Pixel Watch and Pixel Watch 2 owners reported that their watches showed a blank or frozen screen after installing the update. Google acknowledged the issue and said it was working on a resolution.

- Get help with Emergency SOS and Fall Detection if you’re feeling unsafe or if you’ve had a hard fall[11,12]; and Safety Check alerts your close contacts if you don’t respond to a set check-in timer[13]
This creates four different situations:
- No update offered: usually a distribution, model, carrier, or timing question.
- Normal installation: allow the watch time to restart and complete setup.
- Blank or frozen screen after updating: follow Google’s current troubleshooting guidance.
- Unusable watch: contact Google support; a factory reset may be necessary.
What to do if the watch becomes unusable
- Wait several minutes if the watch visibly appears to be installing or restarting.
- Attempt a normal restart if the controls still respond.
- Follow Google’s official blank-screen and frozen-watch guidance.
- Contact Google support if the watch remains unusable.
- Use a factory reset only after considering the consequences and following Google’s current instructions.
A factory reset can erase locally stored watch data and require the watch to be paired and configured again. It is not the first step for a watch that is merely waiting for a phased update, and it should not be presented as a guaranteed fix.
Do not flash unofficial firmware or use an unverified button combination from a forum. Recovery instructions can vary by model and software state; use Google’s current support documentation instead.
Should you install Wear OS 5?
For the historical September 2024 rollout, updating made sense when Google officially offered the OTA for the exact watch. The benefits included a newer platform, bug fixes, performance updates, and Pixel-specific app improvements.

Owners who were offered that first update had a reasonable reason to wait for later distribution or maintenance software, particularly if the watch was needed daily. Owners whose watches are working normally should not interpret a missing old OTA as a reason to reset or replace the device.
If you are deciding what to do now, first check the installed software version and the latest official support information. A watch that is simply waiting for an update should be troubleshot differently from one that repeatedly fails, cannot reconnect, or is no longer practical for the features you need.
