Built on Android 16 and API level 36, it gave developers an official emulator and an early way to test redesigned Wear OS interfaces, Tiles, watch faces, media controls, authentication and Android 16 behavior changes.
It was not a consumer update for every smartwatch. As of September 22, 2026, Wear OS 6 is also no longer the newest platform generation: Google now documents Wear OS 6.1 and Wear OS 7. The preview remains useful as a reference for the Wear OS 6 compatibility work that developers needed to complete.

What Google announced
Google put Wear OS 6 into Developer Preview on May 20, 2025. The release was aimed at developers testing compatibility and preparing apps before the eventual public rollout, rather than ordinary watch owners looking for an over-the-air update.
The preview was based on Android 16, used API level 36, and included an official Wear OS 6 emulator. Google did not promise that every existing watch would receive the software, nor did the announcement provide a universal consumer release date. Eligibility and rollout remain dependent on the watch manufacturer and model.

Google also claimed that watches upgrading from Wear OS 5 to Wear OS 6 could see up to 10% better battery life. That is a best-case claim from Google, not a guaranteed result for every watch, workload or hardware configuration. Google’s announcement contains the original feature and performance claims.
The most important Wear OS 6 changes
Material 3 Expressive for round screens
Wear OS 6 introduced Material 3 Expressive, a visual and motion design system adapted for small, circular displays. The changes include updated typography, shapes, color schemes, dynamic color and components designed specifically for round watch screens.
For developers, this is more than a visual refresh. Google introduced updated Wear Compose Material 3 and Wear ProtoLayout Material 3 libraries, giving teams new building blocks for apps and Tiles. One notable pattern is an edge-hugging button designed to use more of the usable space near the edge of a circular display.
Recommended Free Tools
Google said dynamic colors can match the watch face on Pixel watches. That should not be generalized to every Wear OS manufacturer or software skin. Existing apps will not automatically become Material 3 Expressive apps; developers need to adopt the relevant libraries and reconsider layouts, typography, colors, motion and touch targets.
A more structured Tile layout
Wear OS 6 introduced a three-slot Tile layout:
- Title slot
- Main-content slot
- Bottom slot
The purpose is to make Tiles more consistent and glanceable across different watch sizes. This is a layout and component-system change, not simply a cosmetic redesign of the Tile launcher. Developers should check how content, actions and scrolling behave when the same Tile is rendered on watches with different circular dimensions.
More predictable always-on behavior
Wear OS 6 introduced a more consistent always-on experience intended to remember and display the previous top activity across devices. That makes an app’s ambient presentation more important: the screen shown when the user is not actively interacting with the watch should remain legible, useful and appropriately low-power.
Rank #2
- STYLISH DESIGN, VIBRANT DISPLAY: The lightweight aluminum build blends effortless style with workout durability, while the vivid 1.97" AMOLED display keeps your data easy to read, even under bright sunlight.

- ACCURATE GPS TRACKING & NAVIGATION: Stay on course with free downloadable maps and turn-by-turn directions. Support from 5 satellite systems ensures precise tracking of every move and fast GPS connection.
- 24/7 HEALTH MONITORING: The Amazfit Bip 6 smartwatch provides precise, real-time monitoring of heart rate, sleep, blood-oxygen and stress, empowering you with actionable insights to optimize your health and fitness.
Developers should test transitions between interactive and ambient states, including apps that use custom backgrounds, animations, timers, scrollable content or device-specific UI assumptions. The Wear OS 6 platform documentation describes the relevant behavior.

Google announced enhancements to Watch Face Format version 4, including animated transitions between ambient and interactive modes and new photo-watch-face capabilities. It also announced an API for building watch-face marketplaces associated with Watch Face Push.
Those APIs create new possibilities for watch-face developers and distributors, but they do not mean every third-party marketplace automatically becomes available on every watch. Nor should the announcement be interpreted as an immediate universal cutoff for all older watch-face development approaches.
Richer media controls
Devices running Wear OS 5.1 or later gained richer media controls, including podcast fast-forward and rewind, playlist access, and shuffle, like and repeat controls through a new menu.
Google said developers with existing action-button and playlist implementations could benefit without additional work. That qualification matters: an existing implementation can enable the platform behavior, but every media app does not automatically gain every control regardless of how its media session is built.

Credential Manager and passkeys
Credential Manager became available on Wear OS, beginning with Google Pixel Watch devices running Wear OS 5.1. The platform capability supports passkeys, passwords and Sign in with Google, including authentication flows that can work without the phone nearby.

- Wheelchair mode tracks pushes — rather than steps — and includes push and handcycle activities with preloaded workouts for strength, cardio, HIIT, Pilates and yoga, challenges specific to wheelchair users and more (data presented is intended to be a close estimation of metrics tracked)
This is not automatic passkey support for every existing app. Developers still need to integrate the relevant Credential Manager APIs and test authentication when the watch is connected, disconnected, online or offline. Device and manufacturer availability can also differ.
How to create a Wear OS 6 emulator
Google’s documented emulator path requires Android Studio Narwhal or later. The setup process is:
- Install or update Android Studio.
- Open Tools > SDK Manager.
- In the SDK Tools tab, install or update Android Emulator.
- Open Tools > Device Manager.
- Select Create device.
- Choose the Wear OS category and select a hardware profile.
- Choose the Wear OS 6 system image identified as API Level 36.0, targeting Android 16.0, codename “Baklava”.
- Download the image if necessary, complete device creation and launch it from the Android Studio toolbar.
The official Wear OS 6 image uses a signed build and does not provide root access. That can prevent workflows that depend on modifying the system image or using root-only inspection tools. See Google’s Wear OS 6 emulator setup documentation for the supported configuration.

For a Wear OS 6 target, Google documented compiling and targeting API level 36.
Groovy Gradle
android {
compileSdk 36
defaultConfig {
targetSdk 36
}
}
Kotlin DSL
android {
compileSdk = 36
defaultConfig {
targetSdk = 36
}
}
Changing targetSdk is not a complete migration. It opts the app into Android 16 behavior changes, so teams should review Android 16 compatibility documentation and run regression tests before shipping. Compile successfully is not the same as behaving correctly on a round, always-on display.
What developers should test
- Navigation and layout: Launch the app on multiple round-screen profiles. Check clipping, touch targets, text wrapping and scrolling.
- Material 3: Test dynamic color, updated components, edge-hugging buttons and motion. Confirm that contrast and readability remain acceptable in different themes.
- Tiles: Test the title, main-content and bottom slots at multiple screen sizes, including long labels, empty states and loading states.
- Always-on and ambient modes: Verify that the app shows useful, legible and low-power content when interaction stops.
- Watch faces: Test interactive-to-ambient transitions, animations, photos and complications where applicable.
- Media: Test playlists, podcast seeking, shuffle, like and repeat actions through the media session.
- Authentication: Test passkeys, passwords, Sign in with Google and phone-independent flows, including loss of connectivity.
- Battery: Measure active use, background work, sensors and ambient display separately. Do not assume Google’s “up to 10%” claim will match your hardware.
- Native dependencies: Inspect third-party SDKs, even when your own source is entirely Kotlin or Java.
- Offline behavior: Test disconnected-watch operation, delayed synchronization and recovery after reconnection.
- Vendor variation: Validate more than the emulator when your audience includes Samsung, Pixel or other manufacturer-specific hardware.
The 64-bit issue for developers
A separate requirement became especially important for the 2026 Wear OS development environment. Beginning September 15, 2026, Google Play requires new apps and updates containing native code to provide 64-bit versions in addition to 32-bit versions. Google Play blocks non-compliant uploads, while existing 32-bit devices continue receiving compatible apps.

This does not mean every Wear OS app must contain native code or that every app must suddenly support 64-bit regardless of its contents. It matters when the app or one of its dependencies packages native libraries.

What the preview did not mean
- It was not a universal consumer OTA update.
- It did not guarantee Wear OS 6 eligibility for every existing watch.
- It did not guarantee identical behavior on Pixel Watch, Samsung Galaxy Watch and other manufacturers’ devices.
- It did not automatically redesign an existing app for Material 3 Expressive.
- It did not automatically give every app passkey support or every media app every new control.
- It did not make emulator testing a substitute for validating sensors, LTE, battery life and vendor-specific software on real hardware.
- It did not provide root access to the official signed emulator.
What happened after Wear OS 6
Wear OS 6 is now a historical platform release rather than Google’s newest Wear OS generation.
Wear OS 6.1 is documented as an Android 16 QPR release using API level 36.1. Google has also published developer material for Wear OS 7, a later platform generation based on Android 17. Developers starting a new project in 2026 should consult the documentation for the actual platform version and devices they intend to support, rather than treating the original Wear OS 6 preview as the current target.
That does not make the Wear OS 6 work irrelevant. API 36 compatibility, round-screen layout, Tiles, ambient behavior, watch faces, media sessions, Credential Manager and native-library review remain useful migration areas for apps that still support Wear OS 6 devices.

Who should test Wear OS 6?
App developers should test if their apps use custom layouts, Tiles, background work, sensors or device-specific assumptions.
Watch-face developers should examine Watch Face Format updates, ambient transitions, photo faces and marketplace-related APIs while preserving compatibility with supported legacy devices.
Media developers should verify that their media sessions expose the actions needed for seeking, playlists, shuffle, like and repeat.
Authentication-heavy apps should prioritize Credential Manager, passkeys, phone-independent sign-in and disconnected operation.
Teams with native SDKs should inspect dependencies immediately. A project containing no native source can still package 32-bit-only binaries through an external library.
Teams without physical hardware can begin with the official emulator. A real watch becomes important when testing sensors, LTE, battery behavior, actual always-on performance or manufacturer-specific software. Pixel Watch hardware is relevant to Google’s experience and Pixel-specific behavior; Samsung hardware is important when the audience includes Galaxy Watch users because Samsung’s One UI Watch layer can differ from Google’s stock experience.

Bottom line
Wear OS 6’s Developer Preview was primarily a developer compatibility milestone: Android 16 and API 36, a new emulator, Material 3 Expressive, redesigned Tiles, improved watch-face and always-on behavior, richer media controls and Credential Manager support. Developers should use the emulator to begin testing, but should not confuse the preview with a universal watch update or assume that API 36 alone completes the migration.
For current work in September 2026, check Wear OS 6.1 and Wear OS 7 documentation first, and make native-library architecture checks part of the release process because the 64-bit Google Play requirement is now in effect.
