But there was no single update that gave every Wear OS watch the same capabilities: what you got depended on the exact watch, its software, your region, and the apps and accounts you use.
What changed for Wear OS watches in 2025?
The year’s changes fell into three categories: platform updates from Google, app and service rollouts, and features made for particular manufacturers’ watches. Keeping those categories separate matters: a feature announced for Wear OS is not necessarily installed on every watch, and a feature on a Galaxy Watch is not automatically part of Wear OS itself.
- Gemini: Google said the assistant began rolling out to selected Pixel, Samsung, OPPO, OnePlus, and Xiaomi watches in July 2025. Google’s rollout announcement describes the supported-brand expansion.
- Wear OS 6: Google announced a major platform update with a redesigned interface for round screens, Material 3 Expressive design elements, and developer changes. An announcement does not establish that a particular watch received the update.
- Wear OS 5.1: Selected Pixel Watch models received this Android 15-based platform update in March 2025; it is distinct from Wear OS 6.
- Platform and ecosystem changes: Credential Manager became available on selected Pixel Watch devices running Wear OS 5.1, while Google’s Watch Face Format remained the direction for new watch-face development.
- Manufacturer features: Samsung’s Galaxy Watch8 combined Wear OS 6 with Samsung’s One UI Watch, Samsung Health, and watch-specific hardware. Those features are not universal Wear OS additions.
Gemini arrives on selected watches
Google announced Gemini’s expansion to watches in May and described the Wear OS rollout on July 9, 2025. It was a rollout to selected watches from Pixel, Samsung, OPPO, OnePlus, and Xiaomi—not a promise that every Wear OS model would get Gemini at once. Google’s device and account guidance identifies selected watches running Wear OS 4 or later, but that minimum does not guarantee identical availability or behavior on every eligible watch.
Gemini is designed for conversational requests, such as asking for information, getting details, or starting and controlling supported tasks. What it can do depends on the watch’s software, Google apps, connected services, account, language, and network access. Some interactions also depend on compatible manufacturer apps; Google said watches that upgrade to Wear OS 6 would gain support for interactions with brand-specific apps.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For many requests, the watch needs connectivity. Treat AI replies as assistance, not as guaranteed-correct information, medical guidance, or an emergency service. A voice request can also reveal private information to people nearby, so consider where and how you use it.
Wear OS 6: a redesigned platform, not a universal upgrade
Google’s Wear OS 6 announcement described a refreshed interface designed for circular displays, with Material 3 Expressive elements and more glanceable information. The platform update also matters to app and tile developers: Google’s developer coverage discusses changes in the Wear Compose and Wear ProtoLayout ecosystem, which shape how apps present information and controls on the watch.
Wear OS 6 is the underlying platform. Manufacturers decide which watches are eligible and when an update is delivered, and they can layer their own interface and services on top. Samsung’s One UI Watch, for example, is not the same thing as Google’s Wear OS interface. Google’s Wear OS announcement and the Android Developers overview explain the platform’s direction, but do not establish a universal update schedule for every watch.
Google’s Wear OS site now also discusses later platform developments. Those newer additions should not be mistaken for features that arrived in the 2025 cycle.

Wear OS 5.1 was a separate Android 15 update
Wear OS version numbers and Android version numbers describe different things. Google’s developer documentation identifies Wear OS 5.1 as based on Android 15. It does not mean that every watch running Android 15—or every watch running Wear OS—received the same update.
Google documented these Pixel Watch release dates:
| Documented date | Pixel Watch models listed by Google |
|---|---|
| March 4, 2025 | Pixel Watch 3 Bluetooth/Wi-Fi and Pixel Watch 2 Bluetooth/Wi-Fi |
| March 18, 2025 | Pixel Watch 3 LTE, Pixel Watch 2 LTE, and first-generation Pixel Watch Bluetooth/Wi-Fi and LTE |
These are Google’s documented rollout dates, not a guarantee that every owner received the update on that day; staged delivery can vary by device, carrier, and region. The Wear OS 5.1 release documentation is the reference for the version and listed models.
Credential Manager and watch faces: changes users may notice indirectly
Credential Manager support
Credential Manager gives developers APIs for sign-in flows, including support for compatible credentials and passkeys. Google documented support on selected Pixel Watch devices running Wear OS 5.1. It is an app capability, not a switch that makes every password or account work from any watch: an app must implement the relevant APIs.
Watch Face Format
Google is steering new watch-face development toward its Watch Face Format rather than legacy AndroidX watch-face technology. The format is intended to provide more predictable rendering and better battery behavior, but those goals are not proof of a measured improvement on every watch. Existing faces may continue to work depending on their implementation and the watch software. Before buying a face, check that it is compatible with your watch and software.

These platform changes matter most to developers and to the longer-term face ecosystem; they do not mean that every wearer will see an immediate visual change. Google’s Wear OS 6 developer overview covers Credential Manager and the broader platform work, while the Wear OS site describes the device ecosystem.
Galaxy Watch8 shows how much depends on the brand
Samsung’s Galaxy Watch8 generation is a clear example of the Wear OS stack: Google supplies the underlying platform, while Samsung adds One UI Watch, Samsung Health, its own services, and model-specific hardware. Samsung’s product materials list Wear OS 6 and Gemini alongside sleep guidance, running-coach and personalized workout features, vascular-stress measurement during sleep, and Antioxidant Index features.
Those health and fitness functions should not be described as standard features of every Wear OS watch. They depend on Samsung’s software and hardware, and their availability may differ by model, market, phone, or service. Wellness measurements and scores are informational tools, not diagnoses. Samsung’s Galaxy Watch8 product page describes its product-specific features; Samsung’s Wear OS watch support page explains its setup ecosystem.
The same distinction applies across brands. Pixel Watch features can depend on Fitbit or Google services, while Galaxy Watch features lean on Samsung Health and One UI Watch. Cross-brand Wear OS compatibility does not make the experiences interchangeable.

Which features are shared, and which depend on the watch?
| Feature | How broadly it applies | What can limit access |
|---|---|---|
| Gemini | Selected Wear OS watches, not all models | Supported watch, software and app rollout, Google account, language, region, and connectivity |
| Wear OS 6 interface | Platform-level design | Manufacturer update schedule and model eligibility; manufacturer interface layers remain distinct |
| Credential Manager | Platform capability documented for selected Pixel Watches on Wear OS 5.1 | Compatible watch and an app that implements the APIs |
| Watch Face Format | Google’s direction for new watch-face development | Developer support, face implementation, and watch software |
| Samsung Health features | Samsung ecosystem, not a general Wear OS feature set | Galaxy Watch model, Samsung software and hardware, and service compatibility |
| Pixel Watch Fitbit or Google health features | Pixel Watch ecosystem | Model, app, region, and—in some cases—subscription |
| Google Home controls | Depends on compatible service and setup | Compatible smart-home devices, Google account, app, and software |
| LTE calling and data | Only LTE watch configurations | Carrier, plan, country, and account support |
Google’s Wear OS site warns that compatibility and availability vary. In practice, check the exact watch model and local support rather than assuming a product family or operating-system version guarantees a feature.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to check what your watch actually has
- On the watch, open Settings, then look under System or About for Wear OS version, System versions, or Software version. Labels vary by manufacturer and build.
- Update the companion app on your phone, such as Google Pixel Watch, Galaxy Wearable, or Fitbit, as applicable.
- Check for updates to Google apps and services on both the watch and phone, including Google Play services and Gemini or Assistant where available.
- Open the Play Store on the watch and phone and install pending app updates.
- Restart the watch after a major system update, then check the manufacturer’s support information for the exact model’s rollout status.
If an update is missing, charge the watch to the manufacturer’s required level, connect it to Wi-Fi, and keep it near the phone. Update the companion app and watch apps, then restart both devices. Confirm eligibility for the exact model and check whether the feature requires a firmware update or only an app update, along with any country, language, account, or carrier limits. Sync important data before taking more drastic steps; a factory reset will not make an unsupported watch eligible.
Should you upgrade for the 2025 features?
Keep your watch if its current features meet your needs
If you mainly use notifications, payments, music controls, and basic fitness tracking, a working watch may still do the job. An upgrade is harder to justify when the features you want are already available on your model, are locked behind a subscription, or are unavailable in your region. Battery condition and replacement cost also matter more than a new feature you will rarely use.
Consider a newer model for specific capabilities
A newer watch is more compelling if you want Gemini on a confirmed supported model, newer hardware-dependent sensors, improved display or processor hardware, or a model that ships with Wear OS 6. A platform update cannot add an absent sensor, LTE radio, larger battery, or other physical component to an older watch.

Choose by ecosystem as well as software. Pixel Watch is the more natural fit for Google and Fitbit services; Galaxy Watch is the stronger fit for Samsung Health and One UI Watch features. Google’s current Pixel Watch 4 product page ties personalized coaching to Google Health Premium and advertises an introductory offer; that should not be read as permanent, subscription-free access. Check current terms and availability before buying.
For owners of older Wear OS 3 or 4 watches, do not buy on the assumption that a feature announced in 2025 will arrive later. Verify the precise model, software version, country, companion-phone compatibility, and any service or subscription requirement first.
How to read feature announcements
“Available” can refer to several different stages. When evaluating a headline or product listing, check which one applies:
- Announced: The company has described a feature, but it may not be shipping yet.
- Developer preview or API: Developers can build for it; consumers may not see it until compatible apps arrive.
- Rolling out: Release has begun, but not every eligible user has it yet.
- Firmware-dependent: The watch manufacturer must deliver a system update for that model.
- App-dependent: An app update may enable the feature without changing the watch’s operating-system version.
- Restricted: Country, language, phone, account, carrier, hardware, or paid membership may be required.
That distinction is particularly important for Gemini and health tools: a brand announcement does not establish that every watch in the brand’s range—or every user in every market—has the feature.
