For most workouts, take off rings that feel tight and jewelry that can dangle, snag, or strike equipment. Rings are a particular concern during weight training, while contact sports may prohibit jewelry outright. A healing piercing is different: do not remove its initial jewelry just to exercise; keep it in place unless a qualified piercer or clinician advises otherwise, and avoid movements or contact that irritate it.
Which jewelry should you remove before a workout?
Use the activity and the jewelry’s fit as your guide. Anything that projects, swings, or could catch on equipment or another person is more exposed to snagging or impact. The Association of Professional Piercers warns that jewelry can catch and tear a piercing, and that strenuous activity can cause ripping or splitting. It recommends being mindful of jewelry and using protective gear for sports or other risky activities. Association of Professional Piercers: Piercing FAQ
- Rings: Remove them before lifting if they are tight, hard to take off, or likely to contact a bar or handle.
- Dangling or projecting pieces: Remove earrings, necklaces, bracelets, or other items that may swing, catch, or be struck during movement.
- Contact sports: Follow the sport and event rules, which can require removing jewelry even if you believe an item is secure.
Can you wear rings while lifting weights?
Removing rings before weight training is the safer choice. The University of Texas at Arlington Athletics handbook encourages athletes to remove jewelry before entering the weight room and describes rings as a hazard to athletes and equipment, including the possibility of a ring bending during training. That is guidance for its athletics setting, not a universal rule for every recreational gym; check your facility’s policy as well. Should you take out a new piercing before working out?
Usually, no. The Association of Professional Piercers says exercise and sweating are fine while a piercing heals as long as the activity does not jostle or aggravate it. It generally advises leaving the initial jewelry in place throughout healing, except when there is a problem with the jewelry’s size, style, or material. If an item is causing a problem, seek advice from a qualified piercer or clinician rather than repeatedly removing it yourself. Association of Professional Piercers: Aftercare

Keep a healing piercing from rubbing against equipment or mats, and avoid activity that pulls or knocks it. The APP also advises protecting it from bacteria on shared gym surfaces. General gym hygiene can help: the American Academy of Dermatology recommends disinfecting equipment before and after use, and says a towel can provide an additional barrier on shared surfaces. This is general infection-prevention advice, not a jewelry-specific cleaning method. American Academy of Dermatology: How to prevent common skin infections at the gym
Can exercise make your fingers swell so a ring gets stuck?
Yes. Mayo Clinic says hand swelling during exercise is common and can make rings difficult to remove. If a ring already feels tight or is hard to remove before you start, take it off beforehand rather than waiting for your hands to swell. Mayo Clinic: Hand swelling during exercise: A concern?

Do sports or gym rules ban jewelry?
They may. Organized sports can have stricter rules than a recreational workout. For example, the New Hampshire Interscholastic Athletic Association’s 2025–26 handbook says it follows NFHS rules and quotes a general prohibition on jewelry, with specific secured exceptions for religious or medical-alert medals. Rules vary by sport, event, and governing body, so check the current rulebook or ask the coach or event official before competing.
