The Weekly Auto Orient King Diver is a 1960s Orient with a distinctive mix of day-date display and an internal rotating bezel. In his August 23, 2018 Fratello review, Michael Stockton describes it as an early Orient dive-style watch and the model that began the King Diver line. Its vintage dive-watch looks come with important caveats: the water-resistance rating is uncertain, and the condition and serviceability of any surviving example matter more than its original reputation.
What is the Weekly Auto Orient King Diver?
The Weekly Auto Orient King Diver, reference 19410, is a 1960s automatic watch that Stockton presents as an early Orient dive-style model and the start of the King Diver line. A date-only version was also known as the Full Auto Orient. Stockton places the design among the “light divers” of its era, alongside watches from Seiko and Citizen.
The reviewed watch has a gloss black dial, applied hour markers, luminous dots and pointed hands. Its most recognizable detail is an arrow-shaped hour hand. The day and date are shown in separate windows, with black characters on white wheels. Neither calendar display is quickset, according to Stockton; both advance around midnight.
An internal rotating bezel provides the diver-style timing scale. Rather than turning the bezel directly, the wearer operates it with the signed upper crown. That arrangement, together with the calendar, gives the watch a more involved face than a simple time-and-date diver.

How large is the King Diver?
Stockton reports that his example measures a little over 42 mm across, 50 mm from lug to lug, 19 mm between the lugs and 13.75 mm thick. These are measurements from his 2018 review, not independently confirmed manufacturer specifications. He associates the substantial thickness with the large acrylic crystal, whose sides are nearly vertical.
| Measurement | Reported figure |
|---|---|
| Case width | A little over 42 mm |
| Lug to lug | 50 mm |
| Lug width | 19 mm |
| Thickness | 13.75 mm |
Those proportions make fit worth checking in person, particularly for wearers who prefer shorter lug-to-lug dimensions. The 19 mm lug width is useful when looking for a replacement strap, but confirm the fit and measurements of both the watch and the specific strap before buying.
Is a vintage Weekly Auto King Diver safe in water?
Do not assume that a surviving example is safe for swimming or diving. Stockton says he believes the model was rated to 50 m, but qualifies that as his belief rather than a confirmed specification. He describes it as a light diver and warns owners to look for signs of water entry in vintage watches.

Even if a watch was originally rated for some water resistance, age, wear, past repairs and degraded seals can leave an individual specimen vulnerable. Have a qualified watchmaker inspect it and perform an appropriate pressure test before exposing it to water. A test result applies to the watch in its tested condition; it should not be inferred from the model name or vintage appearance.

Stockton says the King Diver uses Orient’s first automatic movement, with a self-winding mechanism placed over a Royal Orient manual-wind movement. The 2018 article does not establish an independently verified caliber number or provide a parts-interchange guide, so buyers should not treat that description as a complete technical specification.
His own 25-jewel watch needed a replacement setting spring. He found Orient parts difficult to source and ultimately bought a gold-plated Orient as a donor. As Stockton put it, “Parts, in my estimation, are not so easy to source unless a donor is found.” That account is his repair experience, not proof that every example will need the same work or that a particular donor will fit.

What to inspect before buying one
Condition, originality and serviceability are central to assessing a vintage King Diver. Stockton’s review highlights several checks to make with a watchmaker or knowledgeable seller:
- Water entry: Look for evidence of moisture damage and ask whether the watch has been inspected or pressure-tested recently.
- Changed or mismatched parts: Compare the hands, dial, bezel and other visible components with reliable reference material, and ask what has been replaced.
- Wear through plating: Inspect the bezel and other plated components for exposed base metal.
- Crystal condition: Stockton’s acrylic crystal was crazed, and he had not found a replacement. Check for cracks, clouding or crazing and establish whether a suitable replacement can be sourced.
- Service history and parts access: Request service records and clarify what work was completed. A watch that runs is not necessarily fully serviced, and parts availability can affect future repairs.
These are inspection prompts, not a claim that every Weekly Auto King Diver has the same faults. A qualified vintage-watch specialist can assess the specific watch and explain which components are original, serviceable or difficult to replace.

Stockton reported that nice examples were not uncommon at $1,200–$1,600, while later King Divers could often be found for $200–$300. What makes the watch notable?
The Weekly Auto Orient King Diver stands out for combining an internal crown-operated bezel with day and date displays in a large, characterful 1960s case. Stockton’s review also gives it significance as an early Orient automatic and the beginning of the King Diver line. Its appeal is balanced by the practical demands of vintage ownership: uncertain water resistance, aging acrylic and the potential difficulty of finding parts.
Stockton’s discussion of Orient’s history—including the company’s 1950 founding, roots in a 1901 shop opened by Shogoro Yoshida, and its becoming an official Seiko Epson division in 2009—is historical context reported in his article, rather than independently documented corporate history here.
