The Rodania Geometer chronograph and the early Omega Speedmaster share a strikingly similar dial design, but the evidence does not show that either watch inspired the other. Rodania’s official history places the Geometer Chronograph in 1954; a 2020 Fratello account says the production date of the surviving examples it discusses has not been definitively confirmed. Similarity is clear. A proven line of influence is not.
Why do the Geometer and Speedmaster look alike?
At a glance, the black-dial Rodania Geometer and an early Speedmaster have much in common: a prominent minute track, applied indexes and three sub-registers arranged in a familiar chronograph layout. Fratello’s comparison describes both watches as having 38 mm cases. Those details make the resemblance easy to see, but they do not establish a shared designer, supplier or design source.
The comparison is not a perfect match. Fratello describes the black-dial Geometer with broad dauphine hands, while the Speedmaster has a different hand treatment and an external tachymeter bezel. The bezel is a conspicuous functional and visual distinction; it also means that the watches are not simply interchangeable versions of one design.
Which watch came first?
Rodania’s official history gives a brand chronology: the Geometer arrived in 1952, followed by the Geometer Chronograph in 1954. That is the brand’s stated history, not definitive documentation for the production date of every surviving watch or proof that a particular example predates the Speedmaster CK2915.

In its August 20, 2020 article, Fratello discusses the commonly cited 1954 date but reports that a collector it consulted could not obtain definitive confirmation from Rodania for the specific examples under discussion. It characterizes the exact production dating as anecdotal. The two statements are therefore not necessarily contradictory: one is the company’s account of when the model was introduced; the other cautions that the date of particular surviving examples is not firmly established.
Without stronger dating evidence for the watches being compared, chronology cannot settle who influenced whom. The apparent resemblance does not resolve that uncertainty, and the available account leaves the direction of influence unanswered.

What is reported about the Geometer’s movement and construction?
Fratello reports that the Geometer used a Valjoux 72 and notes that its three-position adjustment was unusual for the period. The article also gives a 38 mm case size for the Geometer and the early Speedmaster it compares. These are details reported in that account, not independently verified specifications for every Geometer or Speedmaster example; vintage models and surviving watches should be assessed individually.
What do the historical auction results tell us?
Fratello cites several past sales as evidence of collector interest, not as a guide to current value. It reports that a Geometer sold at Sotheby’s in September 2018 for a £4,750 hammer price. It also reports a later example with box selling for €16,700 including buyer’s premium at Miller & Miller Auctions, and says a later white-dial example again exceeded €15,000 at Sotheby’s. These are historical results as reported by the article; they are not a representative price series or a current valuation.

What can be concluded about the resemblance?
The Geometer and early Speedmaster share a notable visual arrangement, while differing in details such as hand shape and the Speedmaster’s external tachymeter bezel. Rodania’s official history places the Geometer Chronograph in 1954, but the date of specific surviving examples remains uncertain in the account that discusses them. The available evidence supports calling this a resemblance mystery—not claiming that the Geometer inspired the Speedmaster, or that the Speedmaster inspired the Geometer.
