An exhibition caseback is a clear window in the rear of a watch that lets you see part of its movement. It may reveal a winding rotor, gears, bridges, screws, jewels, or decorative finishing, depending on the watch. The window is for viewing, not an invitation to open the case—and it does not, by itself, tell you whether the watch is safe to wear in water.
What can you see through an exhibition caseback?
Also called a transparent or display caseback, an exhibition caseback replaces an opaque rear cover with a clear window. The movement’s layout and the size and placement of that window determine what is visible. On an automatic watch, the rotor may move when you reposition the watch; other visible details can include gears, bridges, screws, jewels, and finishing.

Rolex describes the sapphire crystal caseback on the models it identifies as opening a view onto movement craftsmanship and embellishment while preserving waterproofness. Does a display back affect water resistance?
A transparent back alone does not establish a watch’s water-resistance rating or permitted use. Check the specification and care instructions for the exact model. For example, Vacheron Constantin lists both a transparent sapphire crystal caseback and 5 bar (50 m) water resistance for its Overseas Tourbillon Skeleton, reference 6000V/210R-B934. Water resistance depends on the watch’s complete sealing system, not simply on whether the back is clear or opaque. TAG Heuer notes that water resistance can be affected by aging gaskets or accidental shocks to components that help provide the seal. How to care for a watch with an exhibition caseback
Clean the exterior gently
Follow the watchmaker’s instructions for your specific model, especially if it has a leather strap or a particular water-resistance rating. TAG Heuer’s guide recommends a microfiber cloth or a soft-bristled toothbrush with warm water for exterior cleaning, advises avoiding soap, and says not to immerse the watch. Check the crown and rinse after water exposure when the maker advises it
Chanel advises making sure the crown is fully pushed in or screwed down before immersion, rinsing after sea or pool use to remove salt, sand, or chlorine, and checking water resistance if the case has been opened or after prolonged exposure to saltwater or chlorine. Testing and service recommendations differ by brand and model. Rado advises an annual water-resistance test. Patek Philippe’s cited manual also advises annual testing and recommends service every five years. The manual says that only an authorized Patek Philippe retailer or service center is qualified to exchange the interchangeable casebacks covered by it. What to compare when choosing between display-back watches
- Water rating and intended use: Read the exact model’s rating and instructions rather than inferring water resistance from the display window.
- Movement view: Look at which parts are actually visible and how the movement is finished; the view varies by design.
- Caseback construction: Check the manufacturer’s description of the window material and case construction.
- Care and service guidance: Compare the maker’s testing, service, and warranty instructions, including whether caseback work must go through an authorized channel.
