What Rolex introduced on the Day-Date 40 in 2022
In its official Day-Date history, Rolex places the platinum fluted-bezel model in the 2022 timeline and says: “An exclusive new version of the Day-Date 40 in 950 platinum was launched. For the first time, the emblematic fluted bezel – a signature of the brand – was crafted in this subtly lustrous alloy.” Rolex’s Day-Date history identifies the case metal and bezel as the defining changes.
The bezel was not simply a finish change. Rolex’s 2022 press-release search excerpt says the manufacturing process had to be adapted because platinum is challenging to work with. That supports the production significance of the launch, but does not establish a new dial alongside it. Rolex’s 2022 press release
Was there a new Rolex Day-Date dial for 2022?
The official materials available for this launch do not identify a particular new Day-Date dial as the headline 2022 release. They establish a new combination of 950-platinum case and platinum fluted bezel. That is not proof that Rolex introduced no other dial variations in 2022; it means a dial debut cannot be attributed to this launch on the basis of these sources.

Rolex’s general Day-Date description says the watch displays the date and the weekday spelled out in full. For a useful model comparison, identify the reference, case metal, bezel, dial and markers together rather than treating a dial description as sufficient evidence of a year or release. The slate ombré dial shown in a Rolex brochure
Rolex’s brochure documents a slate ombré dial on the Everose gold Day-Date 40, reference 228345RBR. It describes the colour as slate at the centre, deepening to black at the edge, and shows faceted, deconstructed Roman numerals alongside faceted pink-gold index markers. The brochure does not say this configuration debuted in 2022, so it should not be presented as a confirmed 2022 dial launch.

The brochure says Rolex’s ombré dial design originated in the 1980s and was relaunched in 2019; the gradient is made with black lacquer. Those details describe the broader design approach, not the introduction date of the specific 228345RBR configuration. Rolex Day-Date brochure

For a dial-focused comparison, record the model reference, case metal, bezel treatment, dial colour and finish, and marker style. The Rolex brochure gives the 228345RBR a 40 mm case, calibre 3255, approximately 70-hour power reserve and 100 m/330 ft water resistance; those are specifications for that brochure’s configuration, not evidence about a 2022 dial launch.
