Apple says the bolt should appear inside a ring once the watch is properly connected to its charger.
What the red lightning bolt means
A plain red lightning bolt indicates that the Apple Watch does not have enough battery power to boot. It is not, by itself, proof that the watch is broken or that its battery needs replacing.

When you connect the watch correctly to a powered charger, the symbol should change to a red lightning bolt inside a ring. This indicates that the watch is connected to the charger while its charge level is still very low. The watch may remain on this screen while it builds enough charge to start. Seeing the symbol alone does not prove that the battery is actively increasing, so the charger, adapter, outlet, and magnetic alignment still need to be checked. Apple’s charging guidance explains these indicators and checks.
Red bolt, green bolt, and other Apple Watch symbols

Apple’s status-icon documentation distinguishes these symbols. Low Power Mode is a software power-saving setting, while the red bolt means the watch lacks enough charge to start. Apple says the watch offers Low Power Mode when the battery reaches 10%; the red bolt does not identify a specific battery percentage. Apple Watch User Guide

What to do when you see the red bolt
- Connect an Apple Watch Magnetic Charging Cable or USB-C Magnetic Fast Charging Cable to a USB power adapter.
- Plug the adapter fully into a working wall outlet.
- Place the back of the watch against the magnetic charger. Make sure the magnets align and the watch sits flat against the charging surface.
- Check whether the plain red bolt changes to a red bolt inside a ring.
- Leave the watch connected. Apple says a completely depleted watch may need up to 30 minutes before it turns on.
- After it has had time to charge, try turning it on with the side button.
Do not judge the watch after only a few seconds. A blank screen or charging-cable icon can still be consistent with a fully discharged battery.
If the red bolt stays on the screen
Work through these checks in order:
- Reposition the watch on the charger and confirm that it is magnetically aligned.
- Make sure the charging cable is fully inserted into the power adapter.
- Try another wall outlet.
- Clean the back of the watch and the magnetic charger, removing dirt or residue that could prevent contact.
- Remove any protective plastic film that remains on the charger.
- Try another Apple Watch charging cable and another USB power adapter.
- Leave the watch connected longer if it was completely drained.
A magnetic connection can feel secure even when the watch is not positioned correctly for charging. A failed adapter, damaged cable, dirty surfaces, or an incompatible charger can produce the same apparent symptom.

Force-restart the Apple Watch
If the watch has been connected to a known-good charger for long enough but still does not respond, Apple recommends holding the side button and Digital Crown together for at least 10 seconds, or until the Apple logo appears. Perform this while the watch has charge or remains connected to power. If the screen stays blank, reconnect it and allow more charging time before trying again. Apple’s troubleshooting steps
Charger compatibility and alignment edge cases
The safest choice for diagnosis is an Apple Magnetic Charging Cable or Apple USB-C Magnetic Fast Charging Cable intended for Apple Watch. Third-party chargers may work, but compatibility depends on the specific watch and charging standard. Do not assume that every generic Qi or MagSafe charger can charge an Apple Watch.

Apple also documents a regional exception: certain WPT-compliant chargers purchased in China or Indonesia may be incompatible with particular Apple Watch models and can display an “Unable to charge” message. This warning does not mean that every charger from every region is incompatible.
For larger watches—44 mm, 45 mm, or 49 mm—Apple says the Magnetic Charging Dock or MagSafe Duo Charger may need to be adjusted to another angle or laid flat for proper alignment. For Apple Watch Ultra or later, Apple advises removing the band if the watch does not connect reliably with those charging devices even when they are lying flat.

Does the red bolt mean the battery needs replacing?
No, not automatically. A one-time red-bolt warning usually means the battery was drained too far for normal startup. The icon alone cannot establish battery-health failure.

Battery service becomes more reasonable to investigate if the watch repeatedly reaches the red-bolt screen despite regular charging, charges unusually slowly or not at all with known-good equipment, shuts down soon after charging, or has markedly poor battery endurance. Swelling, overheating, visible damage, or liquid exposure are reasons to stop troubleshooting and seek service.

When to contact Apple
Contact Apple Support or an authorized service provider if the watch remains unresponsive after:
- charging for up to 30 minutes or longer after a full drain;
- trying a known-good compatible cable, adapter, and outlet;
- cleaning and correctly aligning the charging surfaces; and
- performing the force restart.
Service is also appropriate for suspected swelling, overheating, liquid damage, or other physical damage. Do not conclude that the watch is permanently dead merely because its screen was blank for the first few minutes.
