At Milano Cortina 2026, the company reported deploying electronic starting pistols, starting gates, photoelectric cells and the Scan’O’Vision ULTIMATE photofinish camera. Other sports use different equipment, including swimming touchpads and winter-sport analysis systems.
How OMEGA times Olympic events
Timing an event involves more than recording a finish. Equipment may signal the start, measure an athlete’s progress, determine who crossed a finish line first, or communicate results to officials and spectators. The setup changes with the sport and event.
OMEGA says it has served as Olympic Official Timekeeper since 1932, when the IOC selected it to supply timing devices for the Los Angeles Games. The company describes a progression from chronographs and stopwatches to electronic and image-based systems. OMEGA’s Olympic history provides that account.
Examples of Olympic timing equipment
| Equipment | What it does | Reported Olympic use |
|---|---|---|
| Electronic starting pistol | Signals the start electronically. | Listed among equipment for Milano Cortina 2026. OMEGA’s Milano Cortina 2026 equipment report |
| Starting gates | Support event-specific starts. | Listed among equipment for Milano Cortina 2026. OMEGA’s Milano Cortina 2026 equipment report |
| Photocells | Detect an athlete passing a point on the course. | Listed among equipment for Milano Cortina 2026; photocells also feature in OMEGA’s description of Paralympic adaptations. Milano Cortina report and Paralympic timing overview |
| Scan’O’Vision ULTIMATE | A photofinish camera records the finish for close decisions. | OMEGA reported that the camera used at Milano Cortina 2026 could capture 40,000 images per second at the finish line. OMEGA’s Milano Cortina 2026 equipment report |
| Swimming touchpads | Let swimmers stop their own time by touching the pad at the finish. | Described in OMEGA’s Olympic timing overview. OMEGA’s Olympic history |
| Sport-specific winter systems | Handle particular tasks such as start detection or jump analysis. | OMEGA’s Beijing 2022 report lists Snowgate systems, figure-skating Jump Analysis and a speed-skating False Start Detection System. OMEGA’s Beijing 2022 report |
These examples come from different Games and are not a claim that every device is used at every Olympics. Nor are their specifications directly comparable: a camera’s image-capture rate, a touchpad’s finish function and a false-start system serve different purposes.

What was deployed at recent Games?
OMEGA’s reports give a sense of the operation’s scale, but the figures describe different Games and reporting scopes—not a like-for-like measure of efficiency. They are company-reported figures, not independently audited totals in the cited sources.
| Games | OMEGA-reported deployment | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Milano Cortina 2026 | 300 timekeepers, 130 tonnes of equipment, 116 events across eight sports. | OMEGA, 2026 |
| Paris 2024 | 550 timekeepers, 350 tonnes of equipment, 329 events across 32 sports. | OMEGA, 2024 |
| Beijing 2022 | 300 timekeepers and 200 tonnes of equipment. | OMEGA, 2022 |
| Tokyo 2020 | 400 tonnes of equipment, 350 sport-specific scoreboards, 85 public scoreboards, and 200 kilometres of cables and optical fibre. | OMEGA, 2021 |
How Paralympic timing is adapted
OMEGA describes several adaptations for Paralympic events. Synchronized starting lights can provide a visual start signal for deaf athletes; a fifth, lower photocell beam can be used for wheelchair races; and some events use factored timing. OMEGA says the factors are approved by the relevant governing bodies. These are examples of adaptations, not a universal setup for every Paralympic event. OMEGA’s Paralympic timing overview explains them.

Is Olympic timekeeping done with OMEGA watches?
No single wristwatch or consumer stopwatch performs the job of the modern Olympic timing system. OMEGA’s historical account mentions watches and chronographs as part of the evolution of timekeeping, but its current Games reporting describes professional equipment deployed across venues and sports. The equipment examples and deployment figures come from OMEGA’s own reports; they should be understood as the company’s descriptions of its role and systems.
For an event-specific system, the useful questions are what sport and task it serves, whether it handles the start, an intermediate measurement or the finish, what evidence it produces, and whether it has adaptations for athletes or officials. That is more informative than treating unlike specifications—such as camera image rate and the weight of an event-wide equipment deployment—as competing measures of timing accuracy.
