The 2021 Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch Professional update is chiefly a movement upgrade: it brought the manual-winding Calibre 3861 and Master Chronometer certification to a design Omega said was inspired by the fourth-generation Moonwatch associated with Apollo 11. For the Hesalite steel-bracelet reference reviewed here, 310.30.42.50.01.001, the official specifications include a 42 mm steel case, 50-hour power reserve and 5 bar water resistance. This is a specification-led review, not a hands-on ownership or timing test.
What changed with the 2021 Moonwatch?
The headline change was Calibre 3861, a manually wound Co-Axial movement. In its 2021 announcement, Swatch Group said the movement resists magnetic fields reaching 15,000 gauss and that the entire watch received Master Chronometer certification. Those are manufacturer statements, not independent performance measurements of this particular watch.
Omega framed the design as drawing on the fourth-generation Moonwatch style commonly identified as ST 105.012 and worn by Apollo 11 astronauts in 1969. The announcement called out the asymmetrical case, step dial, double-bevel caseback and the bezel’s dot-over-90 detail, along with a diagonal dot near 70. That is Omega’s historical framing of the design, rather than an independent historical assessment. The launch announcement also captured the brand’s approach in CEO Raynald Aeschlimann’s words: “When updating a sacred timepiece like the Speedmaster Moonwatch, every detail must be true to its original spirit.”

Hesalite vs sapphire: compare the exact reference
The Hesalite bracelet model above is reference 310.30.42.50.01.001. Omega also lists a sapphire steel-bracelet alternative, reference 310.30.42.50.01.002, with a transparent caseback. They are separate configurations, so a comparison should start with the reference number rather than the shared “Moonwatch Professional” name.
- Crystal and caseback: the reviewed reference is the Hesalite configuration; the cited sapphire version has a transparent caseback.
- Dimensions: verify each measurement on the current listing for the exact reference. The retrieved official materials do not provide consistent thickness figures across references or pages.

Hesalite is a specific configuration, not shorthand for every 2021 Moonwatch
Reference 310.30.42.50.01.001 identifies the black-dial Hesalite model on a steel bracelet. The sapphire alternative has its own reference. Checking the number on the Omega page, warranty paperwork and seller’s listing helps prevent a crystal or caseback mismatch when comparing specifications.
Price depends on where and when you check
Omega’s Hong Kong product page displayed HKD 54,900 for reference 310.30.42.50.01.001 at the time represented by the cited listing. This is a Hong Kong market figure, not a universal or guaranteed current price; consult the relevant local Omega listing before making a comparison.

Verdict
The 2021 Speedmaster Moonwatch Professional 3861 is best understood as a substantial movement update housed in a design Omega deliberately tied to an earlier Moonwatch generation. The Hesalite reference offers a clearly specified manual-winding chronograph with a 42 mm steel case and 50-hour reserve; buyers choosing between it and sapphire should compare the exact reference, crystal, caseback, dimensions and local price.
