He discussed the Hamilton PSR’s link to the Pulsar, the importance of mechanical watches, collaboration across Swatch Group, and how Hamilton was approaching retail and e-commerce as the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted markets. His comments and figures are historical, not a statement of Hamilton’s current strategy.
Hamilton’s American spirit, expressed through design
Dolla’s explanation of what distinguished Hamilton began with design. He described the brand as design-centric, drawing on its American history and placing emphasis on detail and character. As he put it: “What we try to do when we design our watches is to infuse our American spirit.”
That heritage, in his account, was not just a reference to the past. It informed the design language of current watches, including the Hamilton PSR, while the brand relied on Swiss production and movement expertise to develop and make its products.
Why Hamilton made the PSR
Dolla presented the 2020 Hamilton PSR as a tribute to the Pulsar, Hamilton’s early digital-watch milestone. The official Hamilton publication from that period likewise connected the PSR with the brand’s history and identified Dolla as CEO. The PSR offered a different expression of Hamilton’s heritage from its mechanical watches: its digital display made the historical reference visible in the product itself.

Dolla said development of the PSR concept had begun about two years before the interview. He credited collaboration with Swatch Group companies Asulab and EM Microelectronic in developing its display. These details describe the project as he explained it in 2020, rather than a current product-development update.
Mechanical watches and movement development
Although the PSR was a prominent digital example, Dolla said mechanical watches accounted for more than 80% of Hamilton’s turnover at the time. He also said the brand had launched 16 movements in the preceding seven to eight years. Both figures are his interview-era statements, not independently audited statistics or current measurements.

He described several strands of movement development:
- H-10 three-hand movement: Hamilton was introducing Nivachron hairsprings.
- Chronographs: Dolla referred to silicon hairsprings and increased power reserve in newer Valjoux-based chronographs.
- Longer running time: He said Hamilton asked ETA for a Valjoux movement with a reserve intended to keep a watch running through a weekend.
Dolla situated that work within Hamilton’s longer chronograph history, including the brand’s late-1960s automatic chronograph development. His account emphasized how Swatch Group’s shared technical resources and cooperation could support new products, rather than presenting Hamilton’s development as isolated from the wider group.

What Dolla said about connected watches
Dolla described Hamilton’s focus as durable products and mechanical movements. He did not rule out connected functions categorically: his answer left open the possibility of combining connectivity with a durable fine watch. The interview therefore supports a narrower reading than “Hamilton would never make a connected watch.”
How Hamilton approached retail in 2020
Dolla described omnichannel distribution as important to Hamilton. At the time of the interview, he reported six e-commerce sites, about 3,500 points of sale worldwide, and four mono-brand boutiques. These figures describe the company’s 2020 distribution landscape and should not be read as current counts.

He also said Hamilton was developing click and collect and supporting retailers’ online stores. The approach he described combined brand-operated e-commerce with a broad network of physical retailers, rather than treating online sales as a replacement for in-person distribution.

The conversation took place during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic. Dolla said Hamilton was revising its growth expectations and adapting its activities as retail markets faced disruption, while e-commerce sales continued. Those remarks capture the uncertainty of that moment; they do not establish the brand’s subsequent performance or present-day outlook.

Later leadership context
Dolla was Hamilton’s CEO when Markl interviewed him. A 2022 interview introduced Vivian Stauffer as CEO and said he had been appointed to the role in July 2020. That later context helps date the Dolla conversation, but it does not change its subject: his 2020 account of Hamilton’s design, products, development and distribution.
Hamilton’s film history in brief
Hamilton’s American cultural presence also extends to film. Swatch Group’s 2019 corporate account says Hamilton watches made their screen debut in Shanghai Express in 1932 and cites appearances by the Ventura in Blue Hawaii and Men in Black, as well as a custom watch created for Interstellar that fans call the Murph. Swatch Group reported that Hamilton watches had appeared in more than 500 movies since 1932; that is the company’s own figure, not an independently audited count.
