TAG Heuer has already brought back the original Formula 1’s look—first with Kith in 2024, then through a more heritage-minded Formula 1 Solargraph in 2025. Those releases answer whether the brand would revisit the design. The more interesting question is what a true MoonSwatch-scale event would have required: a recognizable vintage design, a radically accessible format, and a collaboration or launch that made the watch feel like a cultural moment rather than simply another new model.
Why the original Formula 1 was ready for a revival
TAG Heuer says the Formula 1 Series 1 launched in 1986 and was the first watch to carry the TAG Heuer name. Its vivid colors and composite construction gave the brand a more playful, accessible expression of its motorsport identity. TAG Heuer later reported that more than three million Series 1 watches were produced, a figure that helps explain why the design remains a recognizable part of the brand’s history. TAG Heuer’s history of the Formula 1 collection and its account of the Kith collaboration describe that legacy.
The line has a useful advantage for a retro release: its original identity was not just a dial layout. Color, case material and a deliberately youthful character were central to the Series 1 idea. A revival that retained only the name or general shape could look like a modern Formula 1 with vintage styling; a more faithful one would need to make those original design cues the point.
What made the MoonSwatch a useful model—and what it was not
Swatch and OMEGA introduced the MoonSwatch in 2022 as a colorful Bioceramic interpretation of the Speedmaster Moonwatch. The original launch comprised 11 watches. Swatch framed the partnership as a meeting of luxury and street-brand sensibilities, rather than a conventional heritage reissue. Swatch’s launch announcement describes the collaboration.
#1 Best Overall
- Dial Color: Black, Case Shape: Round, Dial Glass Material: Sapphire Crystal
- Band Color: Silver, Band Material: Stainless Steel
- Watch Movement Type: SwissQuartz, Watch Display Type: Analog
- Case Material: Stainless Steel, Stainless Steel Bezel
- Warranty type:Manufacturer; 2 Years International Warranty
That is a useful creative template for TAG Heuer, but not a direct product comparison. The MoonSwatch draws on the Speedmaster and Moonwatch; a retro Formula 1 would draw on a colorful, accessible watch already rooted in TAG Heuer’s own motorsport story. The transferable idea is to make the design immediately legible and the collaboration or launch distinctive—not to assume that the same materials, pricing, distribution or public response would follow.
How close TAG Heuer’s real revivals came
| Release | Connection to the original | Format and modern direction | What it says about a MoonSwatch-scale moment |
|---|---|---|---|
| TAG Heuer x Kith Formula 1, 2024 | A revival of the original Series 1 design, nearly 40 years after its debut. TAG Heuer reported more than three million Series 1 watches produced. TAG Heuer’s collaboration article | A collaboration centered directly on the historic design. The cited brand account does not establish a current price, continuing availability, or a standing collection. | The closest direct answer to the hypothetical: a partner-led return to the original aesthetic. It demonstrates a real revival, not evidence of an ongoing or forthcoming release. |
| Formula 1 Solargraph, 2025 | Revisits the range’s colorful, playful origins. TAG Heuer’s launch article | A modern Solargraph-powered direction; TAG Heuer’s brochure identifies a 38 mm version. Official Formula 1 Solargraph brochure | A heritage-inspired collection release rather than a stated one-off collaboration in the cited material. It updates the concept instead of simply recreating the 1980s watch. |
| OMEGA x Swatch MoonSwatch, 2022 | Colorful reinterpretation of the Speedmaster Moonwatch, rather than a Formula 1 design. | Swatch describes a Bioceramic concept; the original launch comprised 11 watches. The cited launch announcement does not establish current prices or purchase terms. | A benchmark for a conspicuous luxury-and-street collaboration, not proof that TAG Heuer could or would reproduce its reach. |
What a genuine TAG Heuer MoonSwatch moment would have needed
The 2024 Kith release came closest on design fidelity, while the 2025 Solargraph showed how TAG Heuer could carry the Formula 1’s colorful identity into a contemporary collection. A hypothetical larger event would have needed to combine the strengths of both: unmistakable Series 1 character with a clear modern product proposition and a launch concept distinct enough to feel like more than a nostalgic color refresh.

- Make the Series 1 instantly recognizable. The appeal would be strongest if the color and composite-era visual identity were central, not incidental references.
- Give the modern watch its own rationale. The Solargraph release offers a real example of updating the line with modern movement technology, though the available sources do not establish that this exact approach would be used in another revival.
- Choose a collaboration for a reason. Kith already provided a partner-led revival. A MoonSwatch-like cultural play would require an equally coherent creative partnership; no particular future partner or announcement is established.
- Make access part of the proposition. Accessibility helped define the original Formula 1 story, but no verified current price or release terms establish what a new model would cost or how it would be sold.
- Connect the launch to motorsport without confusing context for evidence. Formula 1 announced TAG Heuer’s return as Official Timekeeper from the 2025 season as part of a ten-year LVMH partnership. That is relevant brand context, not evidence of a new retro watch. Formula 1’s announcement
What collectors should take from the real releases
For someone drawn to the 1980s design, the Kith revival is the clearest modern reference point identified here; the Solargraph is the more contemporary expression of the line’s colorful heritage. Neither should be treated as proof that TAG Heuer plans another retro launch. The available official announcements establish these releases and their positioning, but not a forecast of future models or evidence of a MoonSwatch-equivalent sales or audience response.
For an original vintage Series 1, assess the specific watch rather than relying on the collection name alone. Compare its reference and condition, ask about service history, and evaluate the seller’s reputation and return terms. Vintage stock and condition vary by seller, so a generic listing is not evidence that a particular example is authentic or in good condition.
