A ligne (also called the Paris line) is a traditional watchmaking unit used to describe approximate watch-movement dimensions. One ligne is about 2.256 millimetres: a 16-ligne movement, for example, measures about 36.1 mm by conversion. The term remains part of horological vocabulary, but a ligne measurement alone is not enough to determine whether a movement will fit a case.
How long is one ligne?
For practical conversion, use 1 ligne ≈ 2.256 mm. The Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie gives 2.2558 mm, rounded to 2.26 mm; ISO 6426-2:2026 defines the unit as 2.256 mm. The difference is only a matter of precision.

These are unit conversions, not measurements of a particular movement. For a historical example, a British Horological Institute article in the October 2023 Horological Journal, drawing on IWC archival research, describes calibre 69 as 16 lignes and 36.09 mm in diameter. The article also reproduces an archival description pairing “16 Lignes de Paris” with “36mm.”
Where did the ligne come from?
The ligne belongs to the older French measurement system and is derived from the pied, or foot. The Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie describes a foot as 12 inches, each divided into 12 lignes. In continental European watchmaking, the Paris line became a familiar way to express movement dimensions.

Its use predates the adoption of metric measurement in watchmaking. Glashütte Original’s account of its manufactory history says Ferdinand Adolph Lange introduced metric measurement at Glashütte around three decades before it became mandatory in Germany. The manufacturer attributes the change in part to the difficulty of dividing measuring instruments by twelve, which it says could produce inaccuracies when calculating and measuring delicate movement parts.
In that account, Lange wrote in 1851: “My first and decisive step was to construct a measure to realise any calculated ratio on the smallest scale with the greatest possible accuracy.” This is the manufacturer’s heritage account of Glashütte’s history, not a universal explanation for the transition to metric measurement across the watch industry.

Why do watchmakers still use lignes?
The ligne survives as established horological vocabulary and as a traditional way of describing approximate movement dimensions. ISO 6426-2:2026 still defines the term, while historical records show it alongside metric measurements. That persistence does not mean lignes have replaced millimetres or that every modern manufacturer specifies movements in lignes.
For readers, the term is most useful when interpreting older movement descriptions, calibre references or watchmaking literature. Converting the figure gives a helpful sense of scale; it does not supply every measurement needed for repair or case assembly.

Does a ligne measurement tell you whether a movement will fit?
No. A ligne value is not a complete compatibility specification. ISO defines movement fitting separately as the lateral plate dimensions used as a reference for assembling a movement with a case. Two movements with the same nominal ligne measurement cannot be assumed to fit the same case on that basis alone.
For replacement or case-fitting work, identify the exact movement and consult its manufacturer specifications. Check the relevant fitting dimensions rather than relying only on a converted diameter or a historical ligne designation.
