A minute repeater is a mechanical watch complication that chimes the time shown on the watch when the wearer activates it. In the traditional design, low notes count the hours, paired tones count quarter-hours, and high notes count the minutes since the last quarter-hour.
How does a minute repeater work?
The wearer starts the chiming sequence with a control on the watch, commonly a slide. Jaeger-LeCoultre describes a sliding push button, while IWC describes a repeating slide; the control and construction can vary by model. The mechanism then translates the indicated time into a series of strikes. Hammers hit gongs to produce the tones.
- Activate the repeater. Operate the watch’s repeater control to start the sequence.
- Count the hours. In the traditional arrangement, low tones indicate the number of hours.
- Count the quarter-hours. A paired, two-tone strike indicates each completed quarter-hour.
- Count the remaining minutes. High tones indicate the minutes elapsed since the last quarter-hour.
Not every movement uses identical controls, gongs, materials or acoustic construction. IWC describes an all-or-nothing component in its mechanism: it is intended to prevent an incomplete sequence if the slide is released too early. That is a feature of the mechanism IWC describes, not a specification that should be assumed for every repeater.
What does a minute repeater sound like?
The traditional sequence separates the indicated time into hours, quarter-hours and remaining minutes. The different pitches and paired quarter strikes help a listener distinguish those groups. Audemars Piguet describes programmed sequences in which hammers strike gongs, while the specific design influences the resulting sound; there is no single sound shared by every minute repeater.

For example, at 12:59, Patek Philippe’s example calls for twelve low hour strikes, six paired quarter strikes—two for each of three quarters—and fourteen high minute strikes after the last quarter. The example shows why “minute repeater” does not mean one strike for each minute since the hour began: it reports the time in groups, with the remaining minutes counted from the latest quarter-hour.
Is a minute repeater the same as an automatic chime?
No. A minute repeater is activated on demand, and the wearer can trigger it to hear the indicated time. A passing-strike mechanism, by contrast, chimes automatically as time passes. The Fondation Haute Horlogerie distinguishes repeaters, which can be activated as desired, from passing strikes, which sound automatically.

Do all minute repeaters use the same sequence?
No. The hour-quarter-minute pattern is the traditional arrangement, not a universal rule. A decimal repeater is one documented alternative: A. Lange & Söhne’s Zeitwerk Minute Repeater uses a decimal sequence and is linked to the watch’s jumping-numeral display. The sequence can therefore reflect how a particular watch represents time, rather than follow the traditional quarter-hour count.

Repeater watches let the wearer hear the time rather than rely on seeing the dial. Breguet’s historical account describes the gong spring as an innovation that made repeater watches slimmer, and traces development from repeating to the nearest quarter-hour toward minute-level repeating. That account does not establish an exact invention date for the minute repeater, so a specific date cannot be inferred from it.
