A panda dial is a chronograph dial with a light, usually white, main dial and dark subdials. The contrast resembles the dark patches around a panda’s eyes. A reverse panda flips the arrangement, with a dark main dial and lighter subdials. Both terms are informal nicknames. They are not movement types, complications, or formal industry standards.
The standard panda layout
Seiko’s official definition is the clearest modern reference. In its own usage, a chronograph dial with a white background and black subdials is a “panda” dial. The description is about colour and layout only. It says nothing about the movement inside, the case size, or how the watch is finished.
The subdials are the small registers on the face, typically used for chronograph timing or for seconds and minutes. In a panda layout they are the dark elements set against the light field, which is what gives the dial its high-contrast look.
Reverse panda
A reverse panda, sometimes written “reverse-panda,” reverses the colour scheme: a dark main dial with light subdials. The term generally refers to that inverse contrast. Because it is also an informal label, describing the actual colours, such as “black dial with white subdials,” is more precise than the nickname alone.

These proportions balance the detail of a three-register chronograph with a wearable footprint. The 20mm bracelet remains proportionate to the case, while the raised crystal adds vintage depth to the compact design.
Where the name comes from
The explanation is visual. A pale dial with dark chronograph registers suggests the black eye patches and white face of a giant panda. No manufacturer created the name for a specific technical purpose, and it has spread through collector and retail usage rather than through any standard.
Panda, Daytona, and the narrower collector sense
Rolex’s official brand history traces the Cosmograph’s development for motor-racing professionals. It also describes the 1963 Cosmograph and later movement developments. The Daytona, which is the best-known Cosmograph, is a prominent example in the history of contrasting chronograph dials. It is not the definition of a panda dial.

The auction house Phillips notes that “panda” is commonly applied to white dials with black sub-registers across the watch market. Among Daytona collectors, the term is often used more narrowly, for particular white-dialled “exotic” references associated with the Paul Newman nickname. If you are describing a specific vintage Rolex, use the reference number and the exact dial colours rather than the nickname alone.
Panda-style watches from Seiko
Seiko’s announcement uses the nickname literally. Its Power Design Project collection includes a panda-inspired interpretation, which shows the term being used by the brand itself rather than only by collectors. Seiko’s Prospex line also includes panda-dial chronographs. The Prospex Speedtimer SSC813 has appeared in roundups of panda-dial chronographs. Those roundups are a secondary source, so confirm the reference, dial colours, and current availability directly with Seiko or an authorised dealer before buying.

How to describe a panda dial accurately
- Name the main dial colour first. “White dial with black subdials” is unambiguous. “Panda” alone leaves the layout open to interpretation.
- State whether it is a reverse panda. A dark dial with light subdials should be called out explicitly.
- Give the model and reference number. This matters most for vintage Rolex examples, where collectors use the term narrowly.
- Do not infer the movement or features from the nickname. Chronographs can have different numbers and arrangements of counters, so a panda dial does not tell you what the subdials measure.
What the nickname does not tell you
A panda dial describes only the appearance of the dial. When comparing two panda-style watches, check the dial colours and subdial layout first. Then compare the movement type, case dimensions and fit on the wrist, water resistance, and intended use. These are ordinary selection criteria. The panda name does not guarantee any of them.

Also treat the nickname as a shorthand for the visual pattern. A chronograph that matches the colour description can still differ in every technical respect from another watch sold under the same informal label.
