Before you pay for a Seiko in person, confirm who is selling it, match the exact model and caliber to Seiko’s official information, try it on, and leave with complete purchase and warranty paperwork. Your in-store checks can narrow the risk, but they cannot prove a watch is genuine on their own.
Start with who is selling the watch
Seiko’s guidance on buying from authorized retailers says that an authorized purchase gives you authenticity assurance and access to Seiko’s support and services. A purchase from an unauthorized seller may not qualify for warranty or after-sales service. This is the single most important factor in an in-person purchase, because it determines whether anyone can service the watch later.
Seiko publishes a store locator on its official U.S. site, which is a good starting point. Seiko cautions, however, that the locator may not list every authorized retailer, so a store missing from the results is not automatically unauthorized. Ask the seller directly whether it is an authorized Seiko retailer and what after-sales arrangements apply to the watch you are buying. If you are outside the United States, check the Seiko site for your own country, since the authorized network and support terms are set locally.
A discount, a marketplace listing, or a Seiko logo on a shop’s sign does not by itself establish authorization. Treat those as questions to resolve, not as reassurance.

Confirm the exact model and condition
Once you know the seller is credible, compare the exact model or reference number on the watch with Seiko’s current official product information for that model. Make sure the watch in front of you is the one listed on the paperwork, the tag, or the receipt. A mismatch in reference, dial, or bracelet is a reason to stop and ask questions.
Ask a direct condition question: is the watch new, previously displayed, pre-owned, or modified? Seiko has issued an official notice, dated 6 October 2025, titled “Important Notice regarding Counterfeit and Modified SEIKO watches.” In it, Seiko says counterfeit products can be difficult to distinguish and that it does not authorize modified watches built with fake or unauthorized components. The notice’s advice is direct: “Please be sure to confirm authenticity before purchasing.”
Seiko’s notice makes clear that appearance is not a reliable test. Logo placement, case-back engraving, serial numbers, packaging, and finishing quality can all be copied, so none of them should be treated as proof of genuineness. Your stronger practical protections are an authorized seller, matching documents, and a clear answer about modifications. If anything looks wrong, ask an authorized Seiko service center to assess the watch.
Check the fit and the bracelet
Put the watch on and spend a few minutes with it. Assess comfort on your wrist, how the case sits, whether the hands and index markers are easy to read at a glance, and whether the watch feels balanced. Fit is personal, so there is no universal case size that suits every buyer. Judge the watch on your own wrist rather than by specification sheets alone.

Ask whether the bracelet can be adjusted and whether the store can size it on the spot. Seiko’s guidance says its authorized stores can size and fit bracelets. If the store can’t do this, ask what it would cost and where the work would be done before you commit.
Look up the caliber and set accuracy expectations correctly
Every Seiko movement has a caliber code printed on the case back. Note it before you buy, because it tells you which official instructions apply to the watch. Seiko’s official instruction index lists these resources by model. Paper manuals have been gradually discontinued since February 2024, so you may need to use the online version of the instructions.
Do not expect a single accuracy figure to apply across Seiko movements. Seiko directs owners to the accuracy standard stated for their own movement and model. Likewise, a few seconds of observation in a shop cannot establish mechanical accuracy, so do not treat a short test as a verdict on how the watch will perform over time.
If you later find that the watch gains or loses too much time, Seiko’s guidance says to check the movement-specific standard first and then consult an authorized Seiko service center or appointed dealer. Do not attempt to adjust the movement yourself.

Get the paperwork right before you leave
Ask the retailer to complete the warranty card or certificate with the store name and purchase date. Keep the itemized receipt together with the card and the watch’s model and caliber information. Confirm which warranty terms apply in the country where you are buying, because policies differ by market.
Seiko’s official U.S. FAQ, titled “What is warranted during the warranty period?”, describes a warranty that covers qualifying defects in the watch head and metal band when the watch is used as directed, subject to conditions. The same FAQ lists exclusions, including missing or altered warranty documentation and certain kinds of damage or unauthorized service. These terms describe the U.S. policy only and should not be assumed for any other country.
Questions to ask at the counter
- Is this store an authorized Seiko retailer, and what after-sales support applies to this watch?
- What is the exact model reference and caliber, and can I compare them with Seiko’s official product information?
- Is this watch new, display stock, pre-owned, or modified?
- Will you complete the warranty card or certificate with the purchase date and store details, and give me an itemized receipt?
- Can you size the bracelet, and can I wear the watch briefly before I decide?
What each check does and does not establish
The table below separates the in-person checks you can actually perform from the conclusions they support.
| Check | What it helps establish | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Authorized seller | Eligibility for authorized warranty and after-sales service, per Seiko’s retailer guidance | That every watch in the store is genuine, unmodified, or in new condition |
| Exact model and reference match | That the watch matches the paperwork and Seiko’s official product information | Authenticity, since copies can be made to look correct |
| Condition and modification question | Whether the seller discloses display, pre-owned, or modified status | The absence of undisclosed changes |
| Caliber lookup | Which official instructions and accuracy standard apply | The watch’s actual accuracy |
| Try-on and bracelet sizing | Comfort, legibility, and whether the bracelet can be adjusted | Long-term durability or mechanical performance |
| Warranty card and receipt | A documented purchase date and retailer for warranty claims | Coverage in your country without confirming local terms |
When you have a choice between sellers, compare the exact reference and features, the disclosed condition, the retailer’s authorization and warranty support, bracelet adjustment, and the total price for that same model and reference. Price comparisons only make sense when the items are identical.
