A ratchet wheel is the gear fixed to a mechanical watch’s mainspring-barrel arbor. When winding turns the wheel, it tightens the mainspring; a pawl and click spring keep the wheel from freely turning backward. It is part of the winding mechanism, not the barrel’s separate connection to the gear train.
Where the ratchet wheel sits
The wheel is mounted on top of the mainspring barrel and secured to the barrel arbor—the axle at the center of the barrel assembly. In Monochrome Watches’ ratchet-wheel glossary, it is defined as a gear attached to that arbor with a screw.
How it winds the mainspring
In a manually wound watch, turning the crown rotates the stem and winding pinion. The winding mechanism engages the ratchet wheel, which turns the barrel arbor and tightens the mainspring coil inside the barrel. The spring stores energy that will later power the movement. Why the wheel clicks and does not spin backward
A small lever called the pawl, also known as the click, catches the ratchet wheel’s teeth. A click spring presses the pawl against the wheel. During winding, the pawl rides over the teeth and snaps into place, producing the characteristic clicks. This retaining action prevents the mainspring from unwinding freely through the winding mechanism. Ratchet wheel versus barrel teeth
These parts have different jobs. The ratchet wheel turns the arbor to wind the mainspring. Separate teeth around the barrel engage with the gear train, which carries the spring’s power onward as it unwinds. Monochrome Watches distinguishes the barrel and its relationship to movement parts in its watch-movement bridge glossary, which also includes a barrel entry.
