A sub-dial is a smaller display within a watch’s main dial. It is a display area, not a single specific function: depending on the watch, it can show ordinary seconds, chronograph elapsed time, calendar information, moon phase, power reserve or a second time zone.
What does a sub-dial do?
The word describes where an indication appears, not what it measures. A sub-dial—also called a subsidiary dial—sits within the main dial and presents information separately from the central time display. Its purpose depends on the watch’s design and movement.
For example, a small-seconds sub-dial shows the watch’s ordinary running seconds away from the center. Patek Philippe defines a small-seconds hand as “Seconds indicated on a small subdial, and not in the center.” A chronograph counter, by contrast, records elapsed time when the stopwatch function is running. The counter is a function shown on a sub-dial; the terms are not interchangeable. See Patek Philippe’s glossary.
Common sub-dial functions
Small seconds
A small-seconds display shows the seconds of ordinary timekeeping on a smaller scale away from the center of the watch. It generally runs continuously while the watch is operating.

Chronograph counters
A chronograph measures elapsed time without stopping the watch’s basic timekeeping. Hamilton describes it as a timepiece with a mechanism that measures elapsed time while preserving its ordinary time-telling function. When the chronograph is started, the central chronograph hand often records elapsed seconds, while sub-dials total elapsed minutes or hours. The exact arrangement varies by model; traditional chronographs may use separate displays for seconds, minutes or hours. Hamilton’s overview is dated June 6, 2022: Hamilton’s chronograph guide.
Calendar displays
A sub-dial may indicate a date, day of the week or month. Some designs use a hand that points to a numbered scale; others combine calendar information with another indication.

Moon phase
A moon-phase display indicates the Moon’s phase, commonly with a rotating disc visible through an aperture. A common mechanism uses a disc bearing two moon images. NOMOS explains this display as a minor complication: NOMOS on moon-phase watches.
Power reserve
A power-reserve indicator shows the remaining energy stored in the mainspring of a mechanical watch. It can help the wearer judge when the watch may need winding.

Second time zone
A sub-dial can show the time in another time zone. A 24-hour scale may help distinguish day from night in that location.
Other indications
Depending on the watch, a sub-dial can also support an alarm setting, fractions-of-a-second timing or a combined indication. Not every sub-dial is circular.

How to identify a sub-dial’s function
Look at the markings, hand behavior and watch specifications together. Numbers can offer clues, but they do not prove a function: a 12-marked scale, for instance, may be a 12-hour chronograph counter or a second-time-zone display.
- A 30-marked scale often points to a 30-minute chronograph counter; a 12-marked scale may indicate a 12-hour counter.
- A 31-marked scale can indicate the date.
- A 60-marked scale might show seconds, but it can also be a counter rather than the ordinary running seconds display.
- A 24-hour scale may be used for a second time zone, but confirm how that model works.

Sub-dials are not arranged the same way on every watch
A three-sub-dial layout is common on some chronographs, but there is no universal number, position or combination. A watch may use one sub-dial for small seconds, several for elapsed-time counters, or displays for unrelated functions such as a calendar and moon phase. Read each indication by its scale and stated purpose rather than assuming that a familiar-looking layout means the same thing on every model.
