BYRNE gives the shaped titanium case a 36 × 38 mm footprint and a 38 mm headline size; its current product page lists it at 12 mm thick, while Monochrome Watches measured 12.5 mm in its 2024 hands-on. That source difference is worth keeping in view when assessing just how slim it is.
What changes on the Gyro Dial MECA?
The watch uses four cube-shaped indices that pivot to show different numeral styles. They change the visible design of the dial; this is a display animation, not a change to the timekeeping function. BYRNE describes the broader mechanism as changing the dial’s appearance every 24 hours or on demand. BYRNE’s homepage outlines that concept, while Rebecca Doulton’s 3 July 2024 Monochrome Watches review describes the MECA’s four faces as Roman, Arabic, Ghost and Sport.
According to Doulton, the cubes change at midnight by default. The crown can also be used to make them change at midday or on demand. That gives the wearer control over when the display animation happens, while the watch continues to indicate the time in the usual way.
How much smaller is it?
BYRNE calls 38 mm the new, smaller diameter, but its specifications give the shaped case dimensions as 36 × 38 mm. The 2024 Monochrome review also reports 36 × 38 mm, and compares the MECA with an earlier Gyro Dial measuring 41.7 mm in diameter and 14.45 mm thick. That is a smaller footprint and a thinner profile on the published measurements, although the sources differ on the MECA’s own thickness: BYRNE lists 12 mm; Monochrome gives 12.5 mm.

The case is grade 5 titanium. Monochrome describes a combination of polished and sandblasted surfaces and reports a weight of 70 g. The reviewer found the smaller version more comfortable, but that is a hands-on impression rather than a guarantee of fit for every wrist.
Movement and published specifications
The MECA uses BYRNE’s hand-wound caliber 5557. The official product page lists a 60-hour power reserve and a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour; BYRNE says winding about fifteen times provides the full reserve. It also describes a special winding system. Monochrome reports the same caliber, reserve and frequency.

The movement’s part and jewel counts do not match across the two publications. BYRNE’s current English product page lists 243 parts and 39 jewels; Monochrome’s 2024 article lists 261 components and 42 jewels. Neither figure should be treated as a reconciled count.
Crown position, strap and day-to-day considerations
The crown sits at 12 o’clock rather than the more familiar 3 o’clock position. Monochrome says the placement gives the watch a bullhead- or helmet-like look, and notes that winding may be trickier for people with large hands. Those are the reviewer’s observations; the crown position is an important practical detail to consider if you are used to conventional side-mounted crowns.

BYRNE lists a blue grained rubber strap and a grade 5 titanium pin buckle. Monochrome describes a blue rubber strap with a textile pattern and says a folding clasp was reportedly available on demand at the time of its review. Check directly with BYRNE for current clasp options. Both sources report 50 m water resistance; that specification is not a substitute for checking the maker’s care guidance before exposing a mechanical watch to water.
