In haute horlogerie, finishing is the preparation and treatment of watch components between machining and final assembly. It removes defects such as burrs and rough edges, protects parts for assembly, and can add decorative surfaces. Some operations support function as well as appearance; others are primarily aesthetic. The name of a finish alone does not tell you how much was done by hand, which parts received it, or whether a watch is better finished than another.
What is finishing in haute horlogerie?
Machined components can arrive with scratches, roughness, burrs or sharp edges. A finisher prepares them by removing unwanted traces, smoothing or treating surfaces, and checking the result before assembly. The Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie (FHH) describes the work as using special hand tools or CNC machines; some finishers also make holders or small parts. Components that fail the required standard may need to be reworked or discarded.
The work can include grinding away raised imperfections, applying abrasive paste or blasting to remove machining traces, smoothing surfaces and clearing away dust. Parts are then quality-checked and protected before assembly. The exact sequence depends on the component and the finish required.
What are the main watch-finishing techniques?
| Technique | What it looks like or does | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Anglage (bevelling or chamfering) | Shapes and finishes an edge, often leaving a polished bevel. | Patek Philippe describes anglage as one of the more complicated finishing methods. It can remove burrs and machining marks and create a bright contrast beside satin surfaces. Patek Philippe’s finishing description and Breguet’s craftsmanship description explain these uses. |
| Perlage (circular graining) | Repeated, often overlapping circles on plates or bridges. | Patek Philippe likens the pattern to rows of pearls. It is distinct from linear striping. Jaeger-LeCoultre’s description also distinguishes the circular pattern from Côtes de Genève. |
| Côtes de Genève | Parallel, wave-like stripes, often on broad components such as bridges. | Unlike perlage’s circles, this is a linear or ribbed pattern. Jaeger-LeCoultre describes it on large components; its account of dust-trapping is the manufacturer’s explanation, not a universal technical guarantee. Jaeger-LeCoultre and Breguet describe the pattern. |
| Mirror polish (poli noir or black polish) | A highly reflective plane that may look black or grey as the viewing angle and reflected light change. | It is not a black-colored coating. Patek Philippe describes polishing steel with a diamond-paste-coated zinc plate. Patek Philippe |
| Satin or sunray brushing | A matte or directional brushed appearance. | Brushed surfaces contrast with highly reflective polished ones. Audemars Piguet |
Other named treatments include snailing, traits tirés and microblasting. Their precise appearance and application vary; the sources cited here give less detail about them than about the techniques above.

Is watch movement finishing done by hand?
Not necessarily at every stage. FHH describes both hand-operated equipment, such as a polishing lathe, and mechanized processes, including CNC. It also notes that some finishes are now machine-executed and that finishers need to operate CNC machines. Manufacturers may describe particular manual methods for specific operations, but that does not establish that every component or production step is entirely hand-finished.
When a brand uses the phrase “hand finished,” look for the operation it refers to: for example, hand-polished bevels or manually applied decoration. Ask which components and surfaces are included, and whether other steps use machinery. The method and the finished result are more informative than the broad label alone.

Does finishing affect how a movement works?
Some finishing has functional implications. Removing burrs and sharp edges can help prevent defects that could interfere with operation. Breguet says anglage removes burrs and machining marks that could harm operation and reliability; it also emphasizes the contrast between satin surfaces and polished angles. FHH likewise describes finishing as relevant to both appearance and component performance.
Many visible patterns, including decorative striping and circular graining, are chiefly aesthetic. Audemars Piguet distinguishes functional purposes of bevelling and polishing from decoration shaped by aesthetic choices. It is therefore inaccurate to assume every decorative mark improves accuracy or reliability—or that all finishing is merely cosmetic.

Finishing must also respect a component’s geometry. A 2009 Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry account of the Patek Philippe Seal says manual deburring, smoothing and polishing must not alter prescribed dimensions or depart from the original template that defines functionality. That is a criterion reported for that seal, not a universal legal or industry-wide standard.
How can you assess a watch’s finishing claims?
There is no universal cross-brand finishing score established by the sources here. Manufacturer seals set their own criteria, and a seal’s scope matters: Jaeger-LeCoultre describes its High Precision Guarantee as combining chronometric performance with aesthetic excellence and listing finishing processes it evaluates. The Patek Philippe Seal has its own criteria. Neither should be treated as a common industry-wide grading scale.

- Identify the technique. Distinguish edge bevels, circular graining, striping, brushing and mirror polish rather than treating “decorated” as a single quality.
- Look at execution. Check whether edges, polished planes and repeated patterns appear consistent and clearly defined.
- Check coverage. Note which components and which sides are finished. A display-back view cannot establish the quality of surfaces that remain hidden.
- Consider geometry. A finish should not be praised without regard to preserving the component’s dimensions and functional edges.
- Read the method disclosure precisely. Find out which steps are manual, mechanized or combined; a hand-finished claim may concern selected operations.
- Read certifications by scope. Separate chronometric testing from aesthetic or finishing criteria, and compare the stated requirements rather than assuming seals are equivalent.
These checks help describe observable evidence; they do not establish an objective ranking between brands or models. The sources cited here do not provide independent side-by-side inspections or comparative statistics for finishing quality, labor hours, prevalence, or consumer-visible effects on performance.

FHH describes a Swiss watch-finisher apprenticeship lasting three years, with four workplace-training days and one study day each week. Its page also describes an optional haute horlogerie specialization after the first two years and a CNC option. These details concern the Swiss training path described by FHH, not a global qualification, and do not confirm the availability of a particular course.
