What is Lucent Steel?
Lucent Steel is Chopard’s name for the steel it uses in its watches. The company introduced it in 2019 with the Alpine Eagle collection, then announced in 2023 that it would extend the material to all its steel watches, including cases and bracelets. Chopard’s current sourcing information describes the rollout as using at least 80% recycled steel.

Is Chopard Lucent Steel recycled?
Yes. Chopard’s Responsible Sourcing page and its 2024 Sustainability Report describe Lucent Steel as containing 80% recycled content. The report says that content is sourced within 1,000 km of Chopard’s manufacturing sites.

The 80% figure is the report’s stated content level, not a claim that the entire watch is 80% recycled: it applies to the steel material, not necessarily to every component in a finished watch. The report lists Switzerland, France, Italy, Germany, and Austria as origins for scrap and steelmaking.
What goes into it?
Chopard says Lucent Steel combines high-quality industrial scraps from Swiss watchmakers with high-grade steel associated with the medical, aerospace, and automotive industries. The company also describes a loop in which manufacturing scraps are collected and recycled by suppliers into new steel. Its sourcing page says those suppliers are based within 1,000 km of its manufacturing unit and presents the short sourcing distance as a way to reduce transportation emissions.

What does Chopard claim about its properties?
Chopard describes Lucent Steel as anti-allergenic and as having a homogeneous crystal microstructure. It also claims the material is “50% more resistant to abrasion than conventional steel.” That is the company’s comparison; the cited brand information does not provide independent comparative test results, the test method, or a defined conventional-steel reference.

These claims should not be read as a complete watch-durability guarantee. Scratches, wear, and comfort depend on the finished watch and how it is used, while the cited material information does not establish how Lucent Steel compares in a controlled, independent test against a specific alternative.

What do the recycled-content and emissions figures mean?
Chopard attributes emissions comparisons to the International Stainless Steel Forum (ISSF): moving from standard steel with 50% recycled content to 80% is associated with a 30% reduction in emissions linked to production; at 90% recycled content, the figure is 40%. These are attributed production comparisons, not a measured life-cycle assessment for an individual Lucent Steel watch.
Chopard previously described 90% recycled content as an ambition, but its 2024 Sustainability Report records 80%. The sources give differing target horizons for reaching 90%, so the 90% level should be treated as a historical target rather than an achieved result. A higher recycled percentage alone does not establish the total footprint of a watch, which also depends on other materials, manufacturing, transport, and product life.

Which watches use Lucent Steel?
The Alpine Eagle launched in Lucent Steel in 2019. In 2023, Chopard said it would roll the material out to all its steel watches, including cases and bracelets. That is the company’s stated range-wide commitment; check the specifications for an individual reference to confirm its materials, since availability and model details can change.
When comparing watches, evaluate the full reference rather than treating recycled content as a stand-in for overall value or impact. Useful points include price, dimensions, movement, design, warranty, and what the manufacturer documents about the materials.
