Swatch Group announced the technology on 29 August 2018, developed in collaboration with Audemars Piguet, with the aim of reducing the effect of magnetic fields on a watch’s running. It is a component technology, not a complete watch or an external shield.
What Nivachron is—and what it does
A balance spring helps regulate a mechanical watch by governing the oscillation of its balance. Because the spring is part of the movement’s timekeeping system, its behavior can affect how the watch runs. Nivachron is the alloy and balance-spring technology Swatch introduced for this component; the performance of a finished watch still depends on its caliber and the rest of its movement.
Swatch described Nivachron as a “new non-magnetic compensating alloy.” The company’s 29 August 2018 announcement said it was designed to improve mechanical movements’ resistance to magnetic fields. Swatch Group’s announcement credits the development to collaboration with Audemars Piguet.
Is Nivachron magnetic?
Swatch calls the alloy non-magnetic and says a Nivachron balance spring reduces the residual influence of a magnetic field on a watch’s running. That does not mean the whole watch is immune to magnetism: the claim concerns the spring’s role in the movement, and a watch’s behavior depends on its caliber and other components.

Swatch’s launch announcement states that the residual magnetic influence is reduced “by a factor of 10 to 20, depending on the caliber.” This is a manufacturer-reported reduction factor, not a percentage, a universal rating for every Nivachron-equipped watch, or a guarantee that a watch cannot be affected by magnetic fields. The announcement does not set out a detailed independent test protocol. The Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry FH repeated the figure in its 27 September 2018 report, which confirms the claim was reported, not independently laboratory-validated. What else Swatch claimed
Alongside magnetic resistance, Swatch said the titanium-base spring was effective against temperature variations encountered in wearing conditions and offered excellent shock resistance. The company presented these properties as improving chronometric performance. These are claims in the launch announcement; they should not be read as a quantified, identical result across all calibers or as a substitute for a specific watch’s accuracy and testing specifications.

Which watches have used Nivachron?
Swatch Flymagic, 2019
The Federation reported in March 2019 that Nivachron had been integrated into Swatch’s SISTEM51 movement for the Flymagic line. Its launch edition comprised three versions, each limited to 500 units. That is a historical launch detail, not evidence that those editions are currently available. The Federation’s Flymagic report describes the launch.
Swatch × Audemars Piguet Royal Pop, announced in 2026
In an announcement dated 13 May 2026, Swatch Group and Audemars Piguet identified Nivachron in the hand-wound SISTEM51 movement used in eight Bioceramic Royal Pop pocket-watch models. Swatch stated that the movement has more than 90 hours of power reserve and that the collection would be available from selected Swatch stores from 16 May 2026. This announcement establishes a named recent use, but not current inventory at any particular store. Swatch Group’s Royal Pop announcement gives the collection details.

Audemars Piguet CEO Ilaria Resta described the later collaboration as an invitation for a broader audience, including younger generations, to experience mechanical watchmaking differently. That comment frames the Royal Pop collaboration; it is not a statement about the original 2018 technical development. Audemars Piguet’s collaboration page contains her remarks.

Swatch Group’s broader technology history mentions both Nivachron and silicon, but the sources cited here do not establish a controlled head-to-head comparison. They do not support a general conclusion that one material is better in every watch. When comparing specific watches, look at the caliber, the manufacturer’s stated magnetic-resistance specification and its test basis, any accuracy claims, and service support for that model.

Can you buy or retrofit a Nivachron spring?
Nivachron is presented as a balance-spring technology integrated into particular movements, not as a consumer retrofit part. The cited manufacturer announcements do not establish a universal replacement spring or compatibility with arbitrary calibers. For a purchase, check that the exact watch model’s manufacturer information identifies its movement and Nivachron; for service or replacement, consult the watch’s manufacturer or an authorized service provider rather than assuming a generic part will fit.
