The name may describe denim decorated or mended with sashiko running stitches, or new cloth woven with a pattern inspired by sashiko. Boro is related: it refers to cloth built up through layers and repairs, which may be held or embellished with sashiko stitches. To know what a particular garment is, check whether its pattern is woven, sewn through the fabric, or made from patches.
What sashiko means—and what it does not
Sashiko is a stitching practice, not a single denim weave and not a synonym for patched clothing. Traditionally, running stitches could join layers of cloth, reinforce worn areas and add warmth. Stitching also developed decorative and regional patterns; no one pattern represents every sashiko tradition.

A Fall 2024 craft-history account in PieceWork discusses sashiko in Edo-period northern Japan, particularly Tohoku, where stitches joined hemp and cloth scraps. It describes white thread on indigo cloth as a traditional pairing and distinguishes forms such as unshin running stitches and hitomezashi. Three ways the term appears on denim
Woven cloth with a sashiko-inspired pattern
Some makers use “sashiko” for a fabric whose pattern is woven into the cloth rather than sewn on afterward. OMOTO describes its CUBE SASHIKO as 12-ounce fabric with a cube pattern, indigo yarn in the warp and black yarn in the weft. The maker says the raised pattern fades at different rates with wear; that is a product description, not an independently tested durability result. OMOTO’s CUBE SASHIKO collection.

Hand-stitched decoration or mending
A maker or owner can sew sashiko-style running stitches through denim, often to reinforce a worn section, attach a patch or add a pattern. This construction is actual stitching applied to cloth; a similar-looking woven surface alone does not establish that a garment was hand-stitched.
Layered repair in a boro style
Boro describes the look and practice of cloth accumulated through repeated layering and repair, rather than a geometric stitch motif. Sashiko may secure or decorate its patches. Black Bear Brand describes its contemporary boro pieces as layered indigo textiles with sashiko stitching, an example of the combination rather than a complete scholarly definition of all historical boro textiles. How each type is made
Woven sashiko-inspired denim
The pattern is formed as the fabric is woven, so the design is part of the cloth rather than a layer of hand sewing. In OMOTO’s stated example, indigo yarn runs lengthwise as the warp and black yarn crosses it as the weft, producing the maker’s cube-pattern surface. The maker describes the cloth as structured and tactile, intended for a single-layer garment; these details apply to that product, not to every fabric called sashiko.

For a repair, the stitcher places a patch behind a hole or over worn fabric and uses running stitches to secure it. The Japanese Garden’s 2021 handout gives one approachable pattern-making sequence:

- Gather patch cloth, such as lightweight denim, heavyweight cotton or linen; a fine, sharp needle; strong cotton thread, including sashiko thread; small sharp scissors; and chalk or a light-colored pencil.
- Mark the patch shape and a grid on the cloth. The handout advises: “Using a chalk marker or pencil, draw your desired shape onto your fabric.”
- Outline the shape, then sew running stitches along alternating horizontal rows.
- Add vertical rows, followed by optional diagonal rows if you want the additional pattern.
- Attach the patch behind the hole so the stitching shows through, or turn its edges under and appliqué it over the worn area.

Layered boro-style repair
In a layered repair, pieces of cloth are placed over worn areas and stitched to the garment. Repeating that process builds visible patchwork; sashiko stitches can hold the layers in place as well as add decoration. A woven fabric with a sashiko-like motif is not boro simply because it has a geometric surface.

How to identify a sashiko denim garment
Appearance alone can be misleading: raised lines might be woven into the cloth or sewn into it, and visible patchwork does not by itself establish how or when repairs were made. Use the maker’s construction details where available, and check these distinctions:
- Woven or stitched: Is the pattern part of the weave, or are threads visibly sewn through the fabric?
- New cloth or repair: Is this a newly made patterned garment, a garment with applied stitching, or accumulated patchwork?
- Specified materials: Does the maker state fiber, fabric weight or weave? Do not assume those details from the word “sashiko.”
- Handwork: Does the maker explicitly say the stitching is done by hand? A sashiko-inspired appearance is not proof of hand sewing.
- Garment details: Check the individual product description for construction and care instructions; they can differ between products.
Other contemporary makers use the term in their own product descriptions. Studio D’Artisan says it develops fabric to its own specifications and describes sashiko as adding tactile and structural qualities to contemporary pieces; it also identifies its workshop as being in Okayama, Japan. Those statements describe the maker’s work and should not be generalized to all sashiko denim. Studio D’Artisan.
