Sunray brushing is a decorative watch-dial finish made of extremely fine lines radiating from a central point. Also called sunburst brushing, it creates a radial texture whose appearance can shift as the light or viewing angle changes.
What sunray brushing looks like
Look for fine lines spreading outward from a shared center, often beneath the hands. They may be subtle rather than visibly engraved, but together they give the dial a sunburst appearance. Watch descriptions may call the result a sunburst dial.
The lines create the finish’s visual character: as light catches different parts of the radial surface, the dial can appear to change in tone or emphasis. This is an aesthetic effect, not a stated performance benefit.
How it differs from snailing
The key difference is the pattern’s geometry. Sunray brushing has lines that radiate from a common point; snailing forms a spiral and is often used to decorate movement components. A patent describing timepiece decoration distinguishes the two by these patterns: US20160263698A1.

How the finish can be made
One documented manufacturing example uses a rotating brush with metal filaments to cut fine grooves into a brass dial blank. The dial is then silver-plated, with electroplating or physical vapor deposition (PVD) used afterward to add color. This is an example of a production sequence, not a universal recipe for every sunray-finished dial. The specific process can vary; the defining feature is the radial finish.
