The IWC Fliegerchronograph reference 3706 is a 39 mm steel automatic pilot’s chronograph introduced in 1994 and listed by auction catalogues as produced through 2005. Its instrument-style dial, day-and-date display and compact proportions help explain its appeal today. Calling it a “neo-vintage gem” is an appreciative description—not an official category or a promise of investment returns.
What is the IWC Fliegerchronograph 3706?
The 3706 is a discontinued IWC pilot’s chronograph with an automatic movement, three chronograph registers, and day and date displays. IWC’s 8 May 2018 announcement says the company introduced reference 3706 in 1994 as its first mechanical “Fliegerchronograph.” IWC’s announcement gives the historical context; Sotheby’s describes the reference as produced from 1994 to 2005. Sotheby’s catalogue entry
In the catalogued examples, a 39 mm stainless-steel case frames a black, legibility-focused dial. That relatively restrained size, paired with the practical chronograph and calendar functions, is central to the 3706’s present-day attraction.
Why is it called neo-vintage?
“Neo-vintage” is a collector and editorial description, not a formal IWC classification. In the 3706’s case, it points to a watch with a late-20th-century design identity that remains usable as a modern mechanical chronograph. Its 39 mm case feels measured beside many larger contemporary watches, while the pilot-watch layout prioritizes quick reading over ornament.

Fratello discusses the 3706 as an example of neo-vintage proportions, particularly its 39 mm case. That is useful context for the appeal, not proof of a universal collector consensus. Fratello’s discussion of neo-vintage case sizes
How does the 3706 relate to the 2018 IWC chronograph?
IWC revisited the original’s design in 2018 with the Pilot’s Watch Chronograph IW377724. The brand described it as a near-unchanged return of the 1994 design, citing details including a quarter-second scale and luminous rectangular hands. The IW377724 is a later homage, not another name for the original reference 3706. IWC’s 2018 announcement

What movement does the IWC 3706 use?
Catalogue descriptions do not establish one movement designation that applies to every 3706. Sotheby’s identifies calibre 7922 in its circa-2000 example, while Phillips identifies calibre 7750 in its circa-1999 example. Attribute a calibre to the specific watch and its documentation rather than assuming either listing settles the specification for all production. Sotheby’s example; Phillips’ example
The catalogued watches share an automatic chronograph, day and date, and three-register layout. Sotheby’s also records a screw-down crown and back on its example; Dorotheum describes a soft-iron magnetic shield on its circa-2000 watch. Those details should be treated as records of the individual lots, not assumed without verification for every watch offered as a 3706. Dorotheum’s 2021 lot record

What do auction records say about the 3706’s price?
Past auction figures are lot-specific historical records, not a current fair-market valuation. The available examples differ in date, currency, sale context and included items:
| Source and sale | Recorded figure | What it represents |
|---|---|---|
| Sotheby’s, 2019 online catalogue | Estimate: GBP 1,600–2,200 | The cited page excerpt establishes an estimate, not a realized sale price. Sotheby’s lot |
| Phillips, circa-1999 IW3706 | HK$37,800 realized | A result for that specific lot and sale context. Phillips’ lot |
| Dorotheum, 3 December 2021, circa-2000 reference 3706 | EUR 4,096 including buyer charges and VAT; estimate EUR 2,000–3,000 | A historical result for that lot, inclusive of the stated charges—not a present-day price guide. Dorotheum’s lot record |
Comparisons between pre-owned examples depend on condition, originality, service documentation, bracelet or strap configuration, box and papers, location, fees and sale date. The auction records above do not establish a current price range; use recent comparable sales in the relevant market before judging an asking price.

What should you check before buying a 3706?
Catalogue records show that configurations and accompanying items vary. Phillips describes a leather-strap watch with a substantial package of papers and a box; Dorotheum records a steel-bracelet example with its own accessories. Confirm the contents of the particular sale rather than assuming a standard package. Phillips’ catalogue entry; Dorotheum’s catalogue entry
- Request service records and ask who performed the work and when.
- Inspect the case for wear and signs of polishing, and check whether the dial and hands appear original.
- Test the chronograph, day and date functions during an in-person inspection or request clear evidence that they work.
- Compare serial numbers and paperwork, and verify that the seller’s description matches the watch.
- Have a qualified watchmaker or specialist seller assess uncertainties about condition or originality.
These are sensible checks, not an authentication of any particular watch. Do not infer strap fit, bracelet interchangeability, water resistance, servicing cost or current parts availability from the catalogue examples; confirm any such detail for the exact watch with a qualified specialist.
