National Jeweler reported in 2016 that Graff introduced the Hallucination at Baselworld in 2014 with a stated value of $55 million and more than 110 carats of rare colored diamonds. The article attributes the valuation to Graff; it does not document a buyer or completed transaction at that price. National Jeweler’s report is therefore evidence of a launch valuation, not proof of what the watch would sell for.
duPont REGISTRY describes the Hallucination’s small central dial as quartz. The available description does not identify a movement caliber or provide technical performance figures. Its headline price is consequently best understood in the context of an extraordinary diamond-set jewelry watch—not as a price attributable to its quartz mechanism alone. The sources do not break down the value of its stones, movement, or workmanship.
What “most expensive” means in this comparison
A stated valuation, a current catalog price, and an auction result answer different questions. The Hallucination has a reported Graff-stated launch valuation; the sources cited here do not establish a current market value or a completed sale at $55 million. For a fair comparison, keep the price basis, date, currency, source, and confirmed movement type together rather than treating every price as a transaction.

- Catalog price: a brand’s displayed price for a listed model; it can change and is not an auction result.
- Verified transaction: a documented sale, ideally with auction house, sale date, currency, and whether the quoted amount is the hammer price or a total including fees.
Quartz watches in current luxury catalogs

How to check whether a high-priced watch is quartz
Luxury jewelry descriptions can make movement type easy to overlook. Check the watch’s movement specification rather than inferring it from the brand, materials, or collection name. Piaget’s catalog, for example, uses “quartzite” to describe a stone in some contexts; that word alone does not mean a watch has a quartz movement. Graff’s current US diamond-watch collection page confirms a watch collection, but it does not establish that the Hallucination is currently available.
- Look for an explicit “quartz” or “quartz movement” specification attached to the watch model.
- Keep the price source and date alongside the figure, especially when comparing catalog prices with reported valuations.
- Do not treat a brand’s current collection page as confirmation that a one-off or previously publicized watch remains for sale.
What Graff said about the Hallucination
National Jeweler quoted Laurence Graff, chairman of Graff Diamonds, describing the watch as “a sculptural masterpiece, a celebration of the miracle of colored diamonds.” The same report quoted Graff saying, “For many years I have thought about creating a truly remarkable watch that illustrates our all-consuming passion for diamonds. The Hallucination has made my diamond dream a reality.” These are Graff’s descriptions as quoted by National Jeweler, not independent technical or market assessments.
