The Omega Seamaster Polaris is a family of unconventional 1980s Seamaster watches, not one fixed model. Omega’s vintage records show several quartz titanium-and-gold references with different dates and functions, while Omega identifies the Polaris Chronograph as a 1986 example of its experiments with new materials. The exact reference determines the movement, complications, case construction and original water-resistance rating.

Why the name “Polaris” can be misleading

“Polaris” is best understood as a period family designation within the Seamaster range. A watch described simply as an “Omega Polaris” could be a three-hand date model, a day-date, a chronograph or another multifunction variant, depending on its reference. Omega’s official vintage catalogue records separate Polaris references from 1985, 1987 and 1988, rather than a single specification applied to the whole line.

Omega’s official history places the family in the brand’s 1980s response to the quartz crisis and its experimentation with materials. It specifically describes the Polaris Chronograph of 1986 as demonstrating techniques for combining materials. See Omega’s Seamaster history.

What makes the Polaris historically distinctive?

Quartz technology and mixed-metal construction

The official records identify several Polaris watches as quartz electronic analogue models using titanium and gold. That combination was unusual for a luxury sports watch of the period: titanium reduced weight while gold supplied a contrasting precious-metal element. The design belongs to Omega’s broader 1980s effort to make watches using materials and layouts beyond conventional steel cases.

The 1986 chronograph milestone

Omega calls the Polaris Chronograph a 1986 model. This date is an official historical designation, not a claim that every Polaris watch was made in 1986. A catalogue entry for reference TB 378.0885 identifies a titanium-and-gold Polaris chronograph, although the retrieved record provides few additional specifications.

Design attribution requires qualification

A collector history published by Omega Forums attributes the Polaris design to Gérald Genta and describes an initial 1982 quartz three-hand date watch, followed by more complicated models and the Titane XL automatic chronographs. Those details belong to that specialist account, not to Omega’s official catalogue records, so they should be treated as attributed collecting history rather than a complete official chronology. Read the account at Omega Forums.

Official Polaris references and what is documented

The following table separates what Omega actually lists for each reference from details that were not established in the available catalogue text.

What movement does an Omega Seamaster Polaris have?

There is no single Polaris movement. The official records cited above specify quartz electronic analogue movements for the TA 396.1000, TB 396.1231 and TR 396.1121. The specialist collector history reports a broader range, including quartz chronograph and multifunction watches, followed later by Titane XL automatic chronographs. Because those claims come from a secondary collector source and apply to different variants, the movement must be confirmed from the exact reference and the watch itself.

How to identify a Polaris reference

  1. Read the reference inside the case or on the documentation. Compare it with Omega’s vintage catalogue, rather than relying on a seller’s title or the dial alone.
  2. Record the year and complication. Note whether the watch has a date, day-date, chronograph or another display; these differences help distinguish family members.
  3. Check the materials and case construction. Titanium-and-gold construction is common in the documented examples, but the exact case design and the presence of a screw-in case remain reference-specific.
  4. Verify the movement. Quartz and automatic descriptions should match the calibre or movement documentation supplied by the watchmaker.
  5. Separate catalogue rating from present condition. The 12 bar/120 m/360 ft figure is listed for TA 396.1000 only and does not prove that an old, untested watch remains water-resistant.

Does the Polaris remain a water-resistant sports watch?

Only the TA 396.1000 record in the cited material gives a numerical rating: 12 bar, equivalent to 120 metres or 360 feet. That is the original catalogue specification for that reference. It is not a family-wide rating, and age, worn seals, case damage or previous service can make a vintage watch unsafe around water. Have a qualified watchmaker inspect and pressure-test an individual example before relying on any water-resistance claim.

What to check before buying a vintage Polaris

  • Ask for a clear photograph of the reference, movement and caseback markings.
  • Match the reference to an official Omega record and ensure the listed complication and materials make sense.
  • Request service or movement documentation, but treat unauthenticated papers cautiously.
  • Have an independent specialist assess the case, crystal, bracelet, crown, pushers and movement.
  • Do not infer current resale value, parts availability or serviceability from the original catalogue entry; those conditions vary by watch and were not established by the cited records.

Is an Omega Polaris a Seamaster?

Yes. Polaris is used as a Seamaster family name in Omega’s vintage records. Calling a watch an “Omega Polaris” does not identify one uniform model, however; the Seamaster designation establishes the family context, while the reference identifies the actual specification.

What is known about current prices?

No reliable current price range or marketplace-availability figure is established here. Vintage Polaris values depend heavily on the exact reference, originality, condition, service history and completeness, so quoting a single family-wide price would be misleading.

Was every Polaris made of titanium and gold?

The official examples cited here use titanium and gold, but the name covers multiple references and the available records do not establish one universal construction for every watch marketed as Polaris. Confirm the exact reference.

Is the Polaris Chronograph from 1986?

Omega identifies the Polaris Chronograph as a 1986 model. That date applies to the chronograph designation and should not be used to date every Polaris variant.

Can I swim with a vintage Polaris marked 120 metres?

Not without current testing. The 120-metre rating is an original specification for reference TA 396.1000, and an aged watch may no longer meet it.

It depends on the reference. Omega records quartz electronic analogue movements for several references; collector history also reports quartz chronograph, multifunction and later automatic Titane XL variants.

How can I identify my Polaris?

Use the exact case or paperwork reference, then compare its date, complication, materials, movement and catalogue rating with Omega’s official vintage records.
