The Rolex Chameleon is a vintage ladies’ watch known for interchangeable straps, which let its appearance change to suit different looks. Auction catalogs document several configurations from around 1960, but they do not establish the model family’s full production history or a complete technical specification.
Why is it called the Chameleon?
The name reflects the watch’s changeable appearance: its straps could be exchanged. Christie’s catalogs a circa-1960, 18-carat-gold ladies’ Cameleon, reference 8788, and explicitly describes it as having interchangeable straps. That is evidence for the feature on this example, not proof that every watch associated with the name was configured identically.

These catalog records show that the Chameleon name appears with more than one configuration. They are useful documentation of specific watches, not a complete official model history or an independent guarantee of authenticity.
What is not established about the Chameleon?
The available official Rolex history does not discuss the Chameleon. Rolex dates the Lady-Datejust, its first ladies’ version of the Rolex date chronometer, to 1957; that is broader context for women’s Rolex watches, not evidence of the Chameleon’s launch date.
