What does “Padellone” mean?
“Padellone” is most commonly the collectors’ nickname for Rolex reference 8171. Rolex’s modern Perpetual Padellone is a separate namesake model, not a reissue of the vintage watch. The clearest distinction is the calendar: the 8171 has a triple calendar, while the modern watch has an annual calendar.

What is the vintage Rolex 8171?
The reference 8171 is an unusually large vintage Rolex dress watch. Phillips records a 38 mm case and estimates production from 1949 to 1953; Sotheby’s gives 1949 to 1952. The 8171 combines a triple calendar with a moonphase. Day and month appear through apertures, while a hand points to the date. This is a different calendar arrangement from the modern watch’s annual calendar.

Case materials and construction
Auction catalogues document 8171 examples in stainless steel, yellow gold and pink gold; Sotheby’s also notes a few two-tone examples. Sotheby’s describes the vintage watch as having a snap-on caseback and as non-waterproof. Do not apply the modern model’s water-resistance rating to an 8171. Sotheby’s catalogue.
What is the modern Perpetual Padellone?
Rolex describes the modern Perpetual Padellone as a 39 mm watch offered in 18 ct Everose gold or 950 platinum, powered by self-winding calibre 7190. Its annual calendar distinguishes between 30-day and 31-day months, and the watch also displays a moonphase. Rolex states that it is guaranteed waterproof to 50 metres (165 feet). How its annual calendar changes
Rolex says the date, day and month change instantaneously at midnight. The company states: “The changes of date, day and month take place instantaneously at midnight – a feature for which a patent application has also been filed.” The statement is from the Rolex Newsroom; no individual speaker is named. How rare is the vintage 8171?
Sotheby’s gives an auction-catalogue estimate of approximately 1,500 examples, with about 25% in yellow gold. These are estimates in an auction-house catalogue, not a confirmed Rolex production ledger. What does a vintage Padellone cost?
A Phillips lot record reports a $635,000 sale result for one circa-1952 stainless-steel 8171. That is the result for that individual example and sale, not a current valuation or general price guide. Condition, originality, provenance, case material and accompanying documentation all affect how examples compare. Phillips lot record.
When assessing a specific watch, consider its case material, condition and originality, dial configuration, provenance, papers and the context of the sale. Auction descriptions and results can help document individual examples, but one sale cannot establish the value of another. Have a candidate examined by a qualified vintage-watch specialist rather than relying on a listing description alone.

How to tell which Padellone you are looking at
- Check the reference and era: the vintage watch is reference 8171, associated with production in the early 1950s.
- Look at the calendar: the 8171 uses day and month apertures plus a date hand; the modern model has an annual calendar that distinguishes 30-day and 31-day months.
- Do not infer water resistance from the nickname: Sotheby’s describes the vintage 8171 as non-waterproof, while Rolex gives the modern model a 50-metre guarantee.
