Lug-to-lug is the straight-line distance from the outer tip of one watch lug to the outer tip of the opposite lug, measured along the watch’s 12-to-6 axis. It includes the lugs, unlike case diameter, and is often a better first check for whether a watch may overhang your wrist. But it is not a fit guarantee: wrist shape, lug curvature, thickness, caseback shape and rigid bracelet links all affect how a watch wears.
What does lug-to-lug mean on a watch?
Lug-to-lug measures the watch’s full outer span from the top lug tip to the bottom lug tip. It is different from lug width, the distance between the lugs where a strap attaches. NOMOS Glashütte defines lug-to-lug as the distance between the two outer lug ends and lists it separately from case diameter, case height and lug width on its online store: NOMOS watch sizing.
Case diameter describes the width of the case, generally across the dial, and excludes the lugs. Lug-to-lug therefore gives a better indication of how much wrist length a watch occupies and whether its ends might extend past the wrist’s flat top.
Is lug-to-lug more important than case diameter?
For checking potential overhang, lug-to-lug is usually more informative than diameter. Two watches with the same case diameter can have different lug lengths and therefore different spans. lug²lug’s 2026 sizing guide says the difference can be 6 mm or more; that is an example from the guide, not a universal relationship between every pair of watches.

- 【Liftable platform】The liftable platform is designed for better alignment of the punch pin and the watch link pin hole, helping you to complete the adjustment of the strap more efficiently.
- 【Multifunction】We have combined the watch link remover and strap holder into one tool, you only need this one tool to remove and install the watch link pin.Screw-on watch straps are not applicable.
- 【9PCS replacement punch needles】There are two different lengths of replacement needles in the kit. For most of the straps, you can remove the watch link pin by just using the short punch needle pin. For some very wide straps, you can use the long needle to push the watch link pin out a little further for easy removal.
- 【3PCS punch pins of different diameter】Three different diameter punches for different strap pin diameters, compatible with a wider range of watch straps.
- 【Instruction manual】The instruction manual(in English) combines pictures and text to explain to you in detail the right way to use the tool, avoiding wrong operation to damage your watch, and helping you to solve watch problems at home.
Diameter still matters. It helps describe how much case and dial presence a watch has, while lug-to-lug describes its length across the wrist. Thickness, lug shape and how the caseback rests against the wrist add further dimensions. A 40 mm watch can wear larger than another 40 mm watch if its lugs are longer, straighter or paired with a more projecting case.
How to measure lug-to-lug at home
- Lay the watch face-up. Position it so the 12-to-6 axis runs vertically in front of you.
- Measure between the outer lug tips. Use a digital caliper for the most accurate practical home measurement. A ruler is a lower-precision fallback.
- Measure straight across. Take the distance from the outside tip of the upper lug to the outside tip of the lower lug. Do not trace the case’s curve.
- Check the bracelet separately, if applicable. On an integrated-bracelet watch, inspect how far the first rigid links extend beyond the case. They can add to the effective footprint. lug²lug’s 2026 guide estimates 4–6 mm on each side for a rigid first link; treat that as a guide-specific observation, not a rule for every bracelet.
The watchmaker’s published lug-to-lug measurement may differ from a measurement across the bracelet’s first links, so check what is actually being measured when comparing specifications.

How to judge whether a watch fits your wrist
Measure wrist width as well as circumference
Wrist circumference is useful for describing wrist size, but it does not tell you how wide the flat top of the wrist is. Two wrists with the same circumference can have different flat widths, so the same lug-to-lug span may sit differently on each. Measure the flat area across the top of your wrist and compare it with the watch’s span. A flexible measuring tape can help with circumference, but a straight ruler or caliper is more useful for flat width.
Use the span as a screening check, not a verdict
Victorinox advises keeping lug-to-lug equal to or below wrist width as a fit check: Victorinox’s watch-size guide. This is a practical starting point, not a guarantee. lug²lug’s 2026 guide, for example, suggests that a 6.5-inch wrist can handle up to roughly 47 mm lug-to-lug. That is the guide’s rule of thumb, not an industry standard or a promise of comfort for every wrist.

Look at the lugs, caseback and thickness
Long, straight lugs can make a watch span feel more pronounced than shorter lugs that curve down around the wrist. A curved caseback may sit differently from a flat or projecting one, and thickness can affect comfort—particularly beneath a sleeve. The lugs’ shape and the case’s profile matter alongside the measurement itself.
Account for rigid bracelet links
A bracelet’s first links may not bend down immediately at the case. If they are rigid, they can extend the effective footprint beyond the lug tips, making the watch occupy more wrist length than the case measurement suggests. Check the watch from above and from the side rather than assuming the published lug-to-lug captures the bracelet’s reach.

Why we don’t rely on lug-to-lug alone
Lug-to-lug is valuable because it captures a dimension case diameter leaves out, but a single number cannot represent the whole fit. The same stated span can feel different on wrists with different shapes, and watches with the same span can behave differently because of lug curvature, caseback profile, thickness or bracelet construction.
Our practical comparison is to look at six things together:

- The Storage is Simple:the tools are small and exquisite, and the storage only needs a small bag to be completely packed, so you don't need to worry about losing it.
- the lug-to-lug span;
- case diameter;
- case thickness;
- lug curvature and caseback profile;
- whether the first bracelet links are rigid and extend the footprint; and
- your wrist’s actual flat width.
First check whether the lugs sit within the flat top of your wrist when viewed from above. Then consider whether the case and bracelet feel comfortable and work under a sleeve. Published measurements narrow the options; trying the exact model on remains the clearest way to judge its fit.
What to compare when shopping
Look for an exact model’s lug-to-lug measurement rather than estimating fit from diameter alone. NOMOS is one example of a maker that publishes outer lug measurements alongside case diameter, case height and lug width. When specifications are unavailable, ask the seller or manufacturer rather than treating a wrist-size chart as a substitute for the watch’s geometry.
Compare measurements on the same basis: lug tip to lug tip for the case, and, for an integrated bracelet, the reach of the first rigid links as a separate consideration. A useful fit decision combines those measurements with your wrist’s flat width and the watch’s profile—not a single cutoff applied to every wrist.
