For an FEI CSI or CSIO show-jumping Grand Prix, eligibility depends on the event schedule and any qualification conditions, the athlete’s route to qualification where required, and a horse-specific prerequisite: the horse intended for the Grand Prix must complete the initial round of at least one eligible FEI competition before it. Check the schedule and the rule edition governing the particular event before entering.
What the event schedule determines
A class must be designated as a Grand Prix in the event schedule; the label is not interchangeable with any other show-jumping competition. The schedule also states whether athletes must qualify, what qualifying competitions or routes apply, and the relevant entry limits. The FEI Jumping Rules, 27th edition, with updates effective 1 January 2025, provide the rule framework, but the schedule and applicable rules for the specific event control the entry decision. FEI rules describe a Grand Prix as a Table A competition in which performance over obstacles is the main factor. A time allowed applies; a jump-off may separate tied results. The class’s exact format and conditions should be checked in its schedule.
How athlete qualification can work
When a CSI schedule sets qualification conditions, the rules provide certain automatic qualification routes. Which ones apply depends on the event category and star level, the athlete’s result, and any applicable series provisions. A qualifying route is not a guarantee of a start: entry limits and the event’s schedule still matter.

- The previous year’s winner of that same event’s Grand Prix may qualify automatically, subject to the star-level condition specified for CSI3*, CSI4* and CSI5* events.
- The current national jumping champion of the host country is among the listed routes.
- Specified recent individual championship medal winners and the winner of the latest FEI Jumping World Cup Final are also listed.
The rules distinguish CSI from CSIO events, and an event in an FEI Board-approved series may be treated differently. Do not assume a route listed for one category applies to another: check the event’s own qualification conditions and the rule text that governs it.
The horse must complete an initial round before the Grand Prix
Every athlete taking part in a CSI or CSIO Grand Prix must have completed the initial round of at least one eligible FEI competition with the horse intended for the Grand Prix. This is a requirement for that horse, not just a general qualification result for the athlete. The rule’s eligible competition types include:
- Normal competitions and Masters.
- Hunting, speed and handiness competitions.
- Nations Cup, sponsor team and other team competitions.
- Hit and hurry and accumulator competitions.
Completing the initial round is what matters for this requirement. If the pair is subsequently eliminated or disqualified in that earlier competition, that result does not by itself undo completion of the initial round.

If the Grand Prix is held on the event’s first day or is its only competition, the organiser must schedule a training session so athletes can jump the horse in the arena beforehand. Check the schedule for how that opportunity is arranged.
Which competitions can serve as qualifiers?
Where the event schedules qualifying competitions, they must use formats allowed under the rule. These include specified Table A formats, two rounds, a winning round, or a normal two-phase competition. Not every two-part or winning-round class qualifies: competitions in groups with a winning round and special two-phase competitions are excluded from serving as Grand Prix qualifiers.
Because the schedule identifies the actual qualifying classes, confirm a competition’s format and eligibility there rather than inferring it from its name.

A marked-up 2025 rules document states that athletes may not take part in Grand Prix competitions at CSI3* to CSI5* or CSIO1* to CSIO5* before the year in which they reach their 18th birthday. The available document’s status as a consolidated current rulebook is not established, so verify the age provision in the official rules applicable to the event before relying on it. - Find the class in the event schedule. Confirm it is designated as a Grand Prix and note the event category and star level.
- Read the qualification and entry conditions. Check whether qualification is required, which routes and competitions count, whether series rules apply, and what entry limits affect availability.
- Check athlete requirements. Verify age and participation requirements against the rule edition and schedule for that event.
- Confirm the athlete’s qualification route. Where the schedule requires qualification, ensure the athlete meets a route that applies to this event.
- Verify the horse’s initial round. Ensure the same horse intended for the Grand Prix has completed the initial round of an eligible FEI competition at the event, or check that the required training session is scheduled when the Grand Prix is the first or only competition.
