A luxury watch can cost more because of how its movement is made, the materials and finishing used, the assembly and testing it receives, and the maker’s brand positioning or production choices. The mix differs by model: a higher price does not by itself prove greater accuracy, durability, or resale value.
Why are expensive watches expensive?
There is no universal formula that divides a watch’s retail price among materials, labor, marketing, distribution, and profit. The Swiss watch-industry federation identifies movement type, component quality control, hand finishing, and case material as possible contributors, but does not assign a percentage to any one of them. The price reflects a particular watch and its maker’s choices, not a standard cost recipe.

That distinction matters when comparing watches. A costly model may offer more elaborate finishing or a rarer production run, while another may prioritize precision testing or a particular material. Price alone does not show which of those qualities matters most to you.

How much does the movement contribute?
Mechanical watches are generally more expensive than quartz watches because of the nature of their movements, according to the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry. A mechanical movement uses many interacting components and is meticulously manufactured. That does not mean every mechanical watch is handmade, or that a mechanical watch is necessarily more accurate than quartz.

Additional functions can call for more engineering and components, but complication count alone is not a reliable measure of a watch’s price, accuracy, or reliability. Check the maker’s documentation for the specific movement and functions rather than assuming that more complications automatically mean a better watch.
Which materials can make a watch more costly?
Cases may be made from plastic, steel, ceramics, or precious metals, among other materials. Each brings different practical and visual qualities, and the material itself does not establish the quality of the entire watch. The Federation notes that a metal’s composition is often shown on the caseback or in the accompanying documents.
Production details can also be model-specific. CHANEL says its J12 ceramic is heated above 1,300°C and polished with diamond powder; the brand also says the development of Calibre 12.1 took six years. These figures describe CHANEL’s stated processes and movement, not a general benchmark for ceramic watches or movements from other makers.

What does craftsmanship mean in a luxury watch?
Look for specific processes rather than relying on broad claims about craftsmanship. Movement decoration may include polishing, beveling or chamfering edges, and applying decorative patterns. The Federation says some finishing is done by hand, including polishing steel and decorating or chamfering bridges. Audemars Piguet likewise describes hand decoration and explains that beveling and polishing can serve functional as well as aesthetic purposes.
Assembly and quality checks are also part of manufacture. Makers describe their own methods and standards, but those descriptions do not establish how much of an industry-wide retail price goes to hand labor. For example, Audemars Piguet says decoration accounts for “at least 30% of its value” on its own movement-decoration page. That is the brand’s statement about its own watches; it is not a general price breakdown for luxury watches.
What do watch certifications actually tell you?
A certification is useful only when you know what it tests and under what criteria. TUDOR’s explanation of METAS Master Chronometer certification describes tests for precision, magnetic resistance, water resistance, and power reserve. It says a qualifying watch must first have a COSC-certified movement and meet Swiss Made manufacturing criteria.

In that explanation, TUDOR gives the METAS precision range as 0 to +5 seconds per day under the described certification conditions. It compares this with COSC’s -4 to +6 seconds per day for an individual movement and TUDOR’s internal -2 to +4 seconds standard for its manufacture-calibre models. TUDOR also states that the magnetic-resistance test reaches 15,000 gauss. These are figures for the named standards and the maker’s explanation, not universal requirements for luxury watches.
Rolex describes seven qualities guiding its manufacture: precision, waterproofness, self-winding, autonomy, resistance to magnetism, reliability, and durability. That list represents Rolex’s stated approach, not an independent ranking of watchmakers. A maker’s standards can help you understand what it prioritizes, but certification and brand statements do not measure every dimension of quality or value.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does rarity or brand name affect the price?
Brand positioning and limited production can influence what buyers are willing to pay. Patek Philippe says its current collection includes small-series references ranging from ten to several hundred watches, and describes financial and emotional value as part of its own philosophy. That is a maker’s account of its collection and positioning, not independent proof that a particular watch will appreciate or retain its price.

Scarcity may contribute to desirability, but it is not a guarantee of future demand or resale value. Treat a brand’s statements about rarity and value as evidence of how it presents its watches, rather than a promise about what a buyer will later receive.
How to compare two luxury watches
Compare the specifications that affect the way you will use and evaluate each watch. Use the model’s own documentation for details, and compare like with like rather than treating price as a quality score.

- Movement and functions: Identify whether it is mechanical or quartz and which functions it provides.
- Case and crystal materials: Check the stated composition rather than inferring it from appearance.
- Finishing: Look at the case and movement decoration, and distinguish documented hand processes from general marketing language.
- Precision and certification: Find the stated accuracy criteria and what the certification actually tests.
- Practical specifications: Compare water and magnetic resistance, power reserve, warranty, and service support.
- Production and positioning: Consider any stated production limits while keeping brand claims separate from independent evidence of future value.
A watch can be expensive for several reasons at once, but no single feature guarantees that it will outperform a less expensive alternative in every respect. Decide which attributes matter to you, then verify those attributes against the exact model’s specifications.
