Compare the watch’s actual specification and the work behind it, rather than assuming that a higher price guarantees better accuracy, durability, or value.
How the movement affects the price
Movement type and construction are major factors. The Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry says mechanical watches are generally more expensive than quartz watches because of the nature of their movements: mechanical components require careful manufacture and monitoring, and some finishing is done by hand. That broad distinction does not mean every mechanical watch is more accurate or durable than every quartz watch. Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry: why watches cost more.

The caliber—the specific movement inside the watch—also matters. Two mechanical watches can differ in how their movements are designed, made, finished, and assembled. A movement developed specifically for a watch may involve substantial work, but a particular development-cost estimate should not be treated as a current industry benchmark without current evidence.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhy complications add cost
A complication is a function beyond basic time indication. A date display, chronograph, moon phase, or second time zone adds a function; more elaborate examples include flyback chronographs, tourbillons, perpetual calendars, and minute repeaters. The additional mechanisms can increase design, manufacturing, adjustment, and assembly demands. The price effect depends on the particular mechanism and how it is executed, not merely on the number of functions. Watchmakers.ch FAQ on watch complications.

When comparing watches, consider whether you will use the extra function. A complication can represent meaningful mechanical complexity, but it is not automatically a practical advantage for every wearer.
What finishing and craftsmanship contribute
Finishing affects both appearance and, in some cases, how parts function together. Patek Philippe says that finishing can remove burrs and machining traces, smooth edges that move against one another, and help protect parts against oxidation. Techniques it describes include beveling, circular graining, and mirror polishing. These are the manufacturer’s explanations of its own finishing practices, not a universal measure of quality or price. Patek Philippe on hand finishing.

Exterior finishing also changes how a watch looks and feels. Audemars Piguet describes processes including polished and satin-brushed surfaces, openworking, frosted gold, and gemsetting. Such work can require specialized skills and create visible distinctions between watches; it does not establish a fixed share of the retail price or prove that one watch is better overall. How materials change the specification and the work
Cases can be made from materials such as plastic, steel, ceramic, or precious metals. Material affects more than the name on a specification sheet: the price of a precious metal and the difficulty of working it can both matter. Crystals and bracelets also vary. The Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry notes that sapphire is more expensive than plastic or mineral crystal and offers high scratch resistance; rare leather, precious metals, or titanium bracelets can also affect cost. The best choice depends on the watch’s complete specification and how you intend to wear it. Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry on watch materials.

Brand-specific production claims should be read in context. Rolex says it makes proprietary gold alloys and uses Oystersteel. It also describes its Oyster case as comprising 10 to 20 components and requiring 150 to 300 operations. Those figures describe Rolex’s own stated process; they are not industry averages and do not, by themselves, show how much any particular watch should cost. What certification can—and cannot—tell you
Certification can make particular performance claims more checkable, but its meaning depends on what is tested. METAS describes Master Chronometer certification as independent testing of the finished watch under METAS-N001, including accuracy under varying temperatures, positions, and magnetization, as well as checks involving power reserve and water resistance.

The same METAS page distinguishes that scope from ISO 3159 chronometer testing, which tests a movement and specifies an average daily rate deviation within -4 to +6 seconds. METAS states that Master Chronometer watches must achieve 0 to +5 seconds per day. These are certification criteria, not a promise of the exact rate of every individual watch in all conditions. Country-specific rules may also apply
In Switzerland, watch cases made of gold, silver, platinum, or palladium—whether domestic or foreign—that are sold there are subject to control and compulsory official marking, according to the Swiss Federal Office for Customs and Border Security. How to compare two watches fairly
There is no universal price formula that converts a feature into a fair retail price. The sources available do not establish a reliable cross-brand breakdown of manufacturing cost, labor, distribution, marketing, scarcity, brand premium, or profit. Avoid assuming a particular percentage of a watch’s price comes from its materials or branding, or that limited production alone explains a price.
Instead, compare the features that are documented for the specific watches:
- Movement: Identify the movement type and stated caliber, and note whether it includes added functions.
- Complications: Consider what each function does and whether it matters to you.
- Materials: Compare case, bracelet, and crystal materials, including the properties relevant to your use.
- Finishing: Look for specific details on the movement and exterior rather than relying on a general craftsmanship label.
- Certification: Check whether the movement or finished watch was tested, and which performance properties the certification covers.
- Ownership support: Check service availability for the specific watch; it can affect ownership, though the cited sources do not provide a comparative assessment.
These are different reasons a watch may cost more, not a single ranking scale. A relatively simple movement with extensive finishing, a complicated movement, and a precious-metal case each represent distinct sources of added work or specification.
