A luxury watch’s price can reflect its movement, materials, construction, testing and service—not just the ability to tell time. But those features do not create a universal “fair price.” Whether a particular watch is worth its asking price depends on what it offers, how well it suits its owner and which parts of its brand or history the buyer values.
What can make a luxury watch cost more?
The Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry (FH) identifies several potential contributors to a watch’s price: movement type and manufacture, component standards, finishing, case and bracelet materials, and crystal. These are factors to investigate, not a formula that proves any watch is fairly priced. The FH notes that mechanical movements are generally more expensive than quartz movements because of their nature and manufacture. It also says some watches receive hand finishing; that should not be assumed of every costly model. FH’s overview of watchmaking discusses these price factors.

Movement and complications
A mechanical movement has many interacting components and requires careful manufacture. Additional functions, or complications, may add design and construction work, but the label alone does not tell you how well a movement performs or how much it should cost. Compare the actual movement, functions and specifications of the watches you are considering.

Materials and construction
Case materials can include steel, ceramic and precious metals. The composition of a precious-metal case and the difficulty of working that material can affect cost; case details are often indicated on the caseback or in the accompanying documents. Crystal and bracelet choices matter too. FH notes that sapphire crystal costs more than plastic or mineral crystal and offers high scratch resistance.

Rules for precious-metal marking depend on where a watch is sold. In Switzerland, gold, silver, platinum and palladium watch cases are subject to official control and compulsory marking regardless of origin, according to the Swiss Federal Office for Customs and Border Security. That requirement should not be assumed to apply in every country.
What do Swiss Made and other certifications actually tell you?
Swiss Made is an origin designation, not a price verdict
Under the Swissness rules revised in 2017, a watch must have a Swiss movement, be assembled and inspected in Switzerland, and generate at least 60% of its manufacturing costs there to qualify as Swiss Made. The 60% refers to production costs, not the retail price, and some components may come from abroad. Victorinox’s explanation of the Swissness rules describes these requirements. The designation supports a specific origin claim; it does not establish that a watch is worth its asking price.

Understand what a chronometer test covers
Certification is most useful when you know what was tested. METAS says Master Chronometer certification evaluates accuracy under different influencing factors, power reserve and water resistance. The watch must be Swiss Made, and its movement must meet ISO 3159 chronometer criteria. METAS characterizes its certification as “objective proof of the quality of the chronometer,” but its tests do not measure every aspect of quality or value.
The scope differs from ISO 3159: that chronometer test applies to the movement, while METAS-N001 tests the completed watch. METAS states an average daily rate deviation of -4 to +6 seconds for a movement tested under ISO 3159 and a rate accuracy of 0 to +5 seconds per day for a finished watch tested under METAS-N001. These figures describe different tests and should not be treated as interchangeable. See METAS’s Master Chronometer guidance for its certification scope.

A newly announced COSC process
On March 12, 2026, FH announced COSC’s Excellence Chronometer Certified process, with brands able to enter from October 2026. The announced process comprises 15 days of ISO 3159 movement testing followed by five additional days evaluating the complete watch. FH reported a -2 to +4 seconds-per-day rate criterion, a magnetic-field test at 200 Gauss and a power-reserve check. Because October 2026 is the announced entry date, verify that a particular model has actually received this certification before describing it as certified. Details are in the FH announcement.
How much of the price is materials, labor or brand?
There is no general percentage that can reliably divide a luxury watch’s retail price among materials, manufacturing, marketing and brand value. The sources cited here do not establish a universal price breakdown, a market-wide resale premium or a typical investment return. A specific watch’s asking price needs to be judged against that model’s features, alternatives and market—not against an invented industry-wide formula.

When do heritage, scarcity and service add value?
Brand history, production choices and after-sales support can matter to a buyer, but brand claims need attribution. Rolex describes its own production sites, in-house processes and workforce; those statements describe Rolex’s account of its operations, not the whole luxury-watch industry.

It also presents small-series production, rarity, service, heritage and emotional value as parts of its offering. Its slogan, “You never actually own a Patek Philippe. Service can be part of what a buyer is paying for, but its practical value depends on access, cost and the owner’s plans. Check the warranty terms and where the watch can be serviced before treating a brand’s service promise as a benefit you will use.
How to judge two watches at their asking prices
Compare the specific watches on attributes you can verify, then decide which differences matter to you:
- Movement and functions: Identify the movement and complications, rather than relying on a broad label such as “mechanical.”
- Testing: Check the stated accuracy standard and whether certification tests the movement alone or the completed watch.
- Materials and build: Confirm the case composition, crystal, bracelet and other construction details in product documentation.
- Use: Compare water resistance and other specifications relevant to how you will wear the watch.
- Finishing: Inspect the visible details and look for specific descriptions of finishing rather than assuming it from price.
- Ownership: Compare warranty terms, service access and service costs.
- Personal fit: Consider comfort, legibility, design and how much you value a brand’s history or scarcity.
- Market evidence: For price or resale comparisons, use current, dated evidence for the exact models and market. A general claim about luxury watches cannot establish an individual watch’s future value.
A higher price may be justified for one buyer by a preferred movement, materials, testing, service or design. Another buyer may reasonably decide those differences do not warrant the premium. The decision is strongest when it rests on documented features and personal priorities rather than the assumption that an expensive watch must be a good value.
