These factors interact: a celebrated reference does not make every example equally valuable, and one auction result is not a price guide for another watch.
Start with the exact reference and configuration
The reference number is the starting point for assessing a watch, not a complete description of it. Case metal, dial variant, production period and special features can distinguish examples within the same reference. Collectors may also consider whether the components and configuration fit the watch’s production history.

Complications such as perpetual calendars, minute repeaters and split-seconds chronographs can add historical and collector significance. They do not establish a value by themselves; the specific watch’s configuration, preservation and supporting evidence still matter. Sotheby’s discussion of reference 1518 illustrates how a matching pink-gold case and pink dial, strong preservation, original documentation and documented ownership can distinguish one example within an important reference: Sotheby’s on the reference 1518.

Originality and condition can separate similar watches
Collectors look at whether the dial, hands, case, crown, pushers and bracelet are correct for the watch, and whether they retain credible period condition. An attractive or clean-looking dial is not necessarily original. Refinished or replaced components can change the watch’s originality profile, while polishing can soften case edges and reduce definition.

These judgments require specialist examination. The reviewed sources do not establish a universal percentage deduction for a polished case, a replaced part or another condition issue, so a fixed adjustment should not be assumed.
Rarity is about production, not just availability
A watch can be hard to find on the market without having been rare when made. More meaningful evidence includes a short production run, an unusual configuration, a documented special commission or a retailer signature. Such features matter when they can be substantiated and are relevant to the particular reference.
Provenance, papers and completeness add context
Ownership history and period records can help establish a watch’s story. An Extract from the Archives, original papers, a box and related material may support documentation and completeness; Sotheby’s lists ownership history and completeness among the factors its specialists consider when estimating a watch: Sotheby’s watch valuation guidance.

Documents are evidence, not a guarantee of authenticity or value. Their meaning depends on what they record and how they relate to the watch being examined. A complete set may strengthen the context of an example, but it does not replace assessment of the watch itself.

Collector desirability changes over time, and the sale venue and date matter. For an auction result to be a useful comparison, look for a close match in reference and configuration first, then consider condition, originality, documentation, provenance, sale date, venue and currency. There is no formula in the cited sources that can reliably turn those factors into a value for an unidentified watch.
Two published results show why headline prices should not be treated as interchangeable:

| Watch and sale context | Published result | What the result does—and does not—show |
|---|---|---|
| Phillips listing for a 1944 stainless-steel reference 565 with Breguet numerals; accompanied by an Extract from the Archives describing its production configuration | $48,260; estimate $25,000–50,000. The listing’s publication date is not stated. | A specific lot result, not a general estimate for reference 565. Phillips lot listing. |
| Pink-gold reference 1518 with a matching pink dial, sold in December 2021; Sotheby’s describes its certificate, box, archival confirmation, case preservation and ownership history | $9,570,900 | A result for a distinct configuration and sale context, not a direct comparison with the reference 565. Sotheby’s account of the example. |
A catalogue record can also help explain why a particular lot is notable. Phillips’ reference 2497 catalogue, for example, discusses model history, dial details, case features, prior auction history and an original bracelet confirmed by an Extract. Those are lot-specific details, not a universal ranking of watches: Phillips reference 2497 catalogue.

Quick Recap
How to get a particular watch assessed
- Record what is visible. Note the reference and any serial information you can see without opening the watch. Photograph the dial, case, sides and bracelet, along with any papers, box or other accompanying material.
- Gather its history. Collect known ownership and service records, and note what is known about the watch’s purchase and prior care. Keep original documents with the watch rather than treating them as proof of value on their own.
- Do not open the case yourself. Patek Philippe says removal of a wristwatch or pocket-watch case back should be done only by an Authorized Retailer or Authorized Service Center. Internal inspection may be needed, but should be left to an authorized professional: Patek Philippe FAQ.
- Contact a specialist. Patek Philippe says it cannot provide current resale values and recommends contacting an auction house or a dealer specializing in older timepieces. Sotheby’s says its estimates are complimentary for watches it believes it can sell at auction; an estimate is not a guaranteed sale price. See Patek Philippe’s resale-value guidance and Sotheby’s estimate information.
- Ask what the estimate assumes. Clarify whether the assessment is preliminary, which details have been verified, what sale venue and timing it assumes, and whether fees or other selling terms affect the amount you would receive.
