A panda chronograph is a chronograph watch with a light main dial, usually white, cream or silver, and dark chronograph subdials. The name describes that high-contrast look. It is an informal nickname, not a formal technical specification, so it tells you how a dial looks but not how the watch is built.
The defining feature is contrast
What makes a chronograph a panda is the colour arrangement of its dial. Seiko’s official Power Design Project page puts it this way: “In watchmaking, chronograph dials featuring a white background with contrasting black sub-dials are widely known by the nickname ‘panda.'”
Chrono24 Magazine describes the same convention in more detail. The typical panda is a chronograph, commonly with three subdials, set against a solid white, cream or silver dial. The three-register layout is the most common example, not a rule. The nickname has no fixed subdial count, so a two-register or four-register chronograph with the same light-and-dark scheme can still be called a panda.
Reverse panda flips the contrast
A reverse panda, sometimes called a reverse panda dial, reverses the colours: a dark main dial carries light subdials. Enthusiasts use the term to distinguish the two looks. It is not an official classification from any manufacturer or standards body, so brands may label the same design differently or not at all.

Water resistance should be checked periodically as seals age.
- COMPACT 39MM WRIST PROFILE: The WD1863 measures 39mm across the bezel, with a 41mm mid-case, 46mm lug-to-lug length, 12.9mm thickness including the raised crystal and 20mm lug width. These proportions balance the detail of a three-register chronograph with a wearable footprint. The 20mm bracelet remains proportionate to the case, while the raised crystal adds vintage depth to the compact design.
What the nickname does not tell you
Because “panda” describes only the dial, a label on its own does not establish the rest of the watch. Chrono24 Magazine notes that the nickname has never been the official name of any watch. Do not assume a panda-dial watch shares any of the following with another panda:
- The movement, whether automatic, manual-wind or quartz.
- The case size, case material or water resistance.
- The bracelet, strap or bezel design.
- The number of subdials or the functions each one displays.
Photographs are not a reliable guide to any of these. Confirm them in the manufacturer’s own specifications.

Seiko’s panda-face concept is a different idea
Seiko’s Power Design Project includes a collection 2 concept that explores making the dial resemble a panda’s face. That is a design idea built on the animal’s facial features, not just the familiar colour scheme. When you read about “panda” design, check whether it means the colour convention described above or a more literal design reference.

Two manufacturer examples show how the label appears in practice. Both pages describe the dial, but neither establishes the full specification set in the same way, so the table records only what each source states.

A 2024 brochure shows how a configuration was presented that year. It does not confirm that the model is still in production. Check the brand’s current catalogue, and a retailer’s stock, before treating either example as available to buy.

- Base colour of the main dial: white, cream or silver marks the classic panda; dark marks a reverse panda.
- Subdial colour and contrast: the subdials should stand out clearly against the main dial. Look for black on white or the inverse.
- Register layout and functions: count the subdials and confirm what each one displays in the manufacturer’s specifications.
- Case size and material: take these from the manufacturer’s figures, not from the photograph.
- Movement: confirm the movement type in the manufacturer’s specifications. The dial colour does not reveal it.
If a seller calls a watch a panda but the dial is not light with dark subdials, the label is a marketing description rather than a description of the design.
