That rating covers swimming, showering and most everyday water use. It does not make a G-SHOCK waterproof in the strict sense, and it does not make a standard model suitable for scuba diving. Casio says ordinary 20-bar models should not be used for scuba, and it points divers to FROGMAN models with ISO 200m diving water resistance. The exact rules depend on the model, so the marking and the manual decide the question for any specific watch.
Why Casio says “water resistant,” not “waterproof”
Casio’s own water-resistance FAQ addresses the wording directly: “In everyday speech, many people describe G-SHOCK watches as waterproof because they are designed for use in and around water. Technically, however, the more accurate term is ‘water resistant.’” The statement is Casio’s own, published on its G-SHOCK water-resistance page. The distinction matters because “waterproof” implies a watch that stays sealed under any water condition, while “water resistant” describes a rated level of protection that can be lost over time.
What the 20 BAR and 200m markings actually measure
The number on the watch is a test pressure, not a depth you can safely reach. Casio’s technology page explains that the metre figure is a pictorial representation of that test pressure and does not indicate that the watch is usable at that depth. It places the rating within the DIN 8310 and ISO 22810 standards framework (see Casio’s water resistance technology page). Casio’s separate water-resistant watches guidance makes the same split between a pressure rating and actual use.
In practice, that means:
- A 20-bar rating describes how much pressure the case was tested to withstand when new.
- “200m” is a conversion of that pressure, so it should not be read as a depth limit or a dive rating.
- Phrases such as “safe to 200 meters” should not be used for an ordinary G-SHOCK.
What a standard 20-bar G-SHOCK can and cannot be used for
Casio’s general guidance describes 20-bar resistance as suitable for everyday water work, showering, swimming, surfing and jet skiing. Its operating precautions for module 5657 list swimming, windsurfing and skin diving as acceptable use for a watch marked 20BAR, and they say not to use that watch for scuba diving or for diving that requires air tanks. The table below sets out the boundary.

Casio’s general guidance and its module-specific manual are not identical in tone, so the safest reading is the narrower one: use a standard 20-bar watch for surface water activity, and reserve scuba for a model explicitly rated and designed for diving. The module 5657 operating precautions are the primary reference for that module’s wording.
Water resistance is not permanent
Casio warns that seals wear naturally, so a rating describes a watch’s condition at the time it was tested, not its condition today. Temperature extremes, solvents and cosmetics can speed that wear. The module 5657 manual says gaskets should be replaced periodically, about every two or three years. That interval is the manual’s own maintenance guidance for that module, not a universal schedule for every G-SHOCK, and actual needs depend on use and exposure.

Battery replacement is the point where seals are most often disturbed. Casio’s guidance says the battery should be replaced by the original retailer or an authorized Casio service center, where a trained technician can inspect water resistance. A watch that has had its battery changed elsewhere, or that is of unknown age, should be treated as unverified until it has been tested.
Care routine after water exposure
- Do not press buttons while the watch is wet or underwater. Operate the controls only after the case is dry.
- Avoid hot water, baths, heated pools and saunas. Heat accelerates seal wear.
- Keep soap and detergent away from the watch. Rinse it after any contact.
- After seawater, rinse with plain fresh water. Salt and grit left in the case and on the band can cause damage over time.
- Dry the watch before storing it. Moisture left in the case can work against the seals.
When to stop using the watch in water and get it inspected
Water resistance is a condition you verify, not one you assume. Stop water use and take the watch to an authorized Casio service center if any of these apply:

- You see moisture or fogging inside the crystal.
- The case, crystal or case back has been dropped, cracked or otherwise damaged.
- The watch is older, has an unknown service history, or its battery was changed outside an authorized service.
- The watch has been used in saltwater and has not been rinsed and checked.
A standard 20-bar watch that has passed a service inspection is still a 20-bar watch. Its use category does not change because it was serviced, so the activity limits in the table above still apply.
Look for the water-resistance marking on the watch and in its manual before deciding where it can go. The model documentation is what settles the rating and the permitted activities for that exact watch.
