What Makes a Watch Brand a True Manufacture—and Why Does It Matter?

A manufacture label describes a watch brand’s control over movement development and production, not a universal quality grade. Here’s how to evaluate what a specific brand actually does.

A “manufacture” watch brand has meaningful control over the design and production of its movements, but the term has no single generally accepted or protected definition. It is best understood as a description of how a company makes watches—not a quality certificate. To assess a claim, look at the specific calibre and ask who designs it, makes its parts, finishes and assembles it, and tests it.

What does “manufacture movement” mean?

A useful working definition is a movement developed and produced under substantial control of the watchmaker. That control may cover movement architecture, component production, finishing, assembly, regulation and testing. It need not mean that every part is made in one factory—or even by one company.

A. Lange & Söhne puts the ambiguity plainly on its official manufacture-movements page: “There is no generally accepted or protected definition of the term ‘manufacture movement.’” The brand says its proprietary movements are developed by its calibre engineers, crafted in its manufacture, then finished and assembled twice by its watchmakers. That is the company’s definition and description of its own work, not an industry-wide rule or independent audit.

In practice, manufacture can describe a spectrum of production arrangements. A brand may make some critical components itself, work with an affiliated movement maker, or rely on specialist suppliers for particular parts. The meaningful question is not whether every component shares one address, but what the brand controls and where each important stage takes place.

How to check a manufacture claim

Use the claim for a named watch and calibre, rather than assuming it applies to everything a brand sells. Check these points:

  1. Design: Who developed the calibre and its architecture?
  2. Components: Which movement parts are made by the brand, a controlled affiliate or an outside specialist?
  3. Production and finishing: Where are parts finished, and where does that work happen?
  4. Assembly and testing: Who assembles, regulates and tests the movement, and at which facility?
  5. Scope: Does the claim cover the full collection, or only named models and calibres?
  6. Performance evidence: What model-specific accuracy specifications, certification or testing information is published?

Brand pages can explain a company’s production model, but their descriptions are the brands’ own claims. For practical buying decisions, verify details against the specification for the exact reference you are considering.

What manufacture looks like in practice

These examples show why the label does not reduce neatly to “made entirely in one building.” They describe different kinds of integration and are based on the brands’ own accounts.

A. Lange & Söhne: an explicit in-house definition

The brand says every watch bearing its logo uses an in-house manufacture movement. It also says it has introduced more than 70 calibres since its 1990 re-establishment. That figure appears on an undated official page accessed in 2026; it is a brand-reported total, not a count independently audited here. Lange says internal development allows more individual designs, while noting that ready-made movements are also used in luxury watchmaking and can limit design possibilities.

TUDOR and Kenissi: an integrated production network

TUDOR says its watches are assembled and fully tested at its Le Locle manufacture, a 5,500-square-metre facility, according to an undated official page accessed in 2026. The brand describes the facility as physically and visually connected to Kenissi, the movement-production company founded in 2016, and says Kenissi and TUDOR-owned affiliates have enabled integration of calibre development and strategic-component production. TUDOR identifies the Pelagos as a model powered by Manufacture Calibre MT5612. This example illustrates a production network involving connected facilities and affiliated capability—not a claim that every stage happens in one room.

Girard-Perregaux: essential components and individual craft

Girard-Perregaux says it designs, develops and produces all essential components of its watches. It also describes one watchmaker assembling and setting a Haute Horlogerie timepiece from start to finish. Those statements reflect the brand’s account of its own approach; the assembly example should not be assumed to describe every model.

Parmigiani Fleurier: specialist firms within a manufacture

Parmigiani Fleurier describes its Watchmaking Center as a group of artisanal Swiss firms under the Sandoz Family Foundation. According to the brand, specialist producers within the center make parts including hairsprings, complete movements, cases and dials, with control from design through final assembly. The example shows that an integrated manufacture can draw on several specialist producers rather than a single factory doing everything.

Other brands’ descriptions

  • Blancpain says it designs and makes a significant part of its components and tools in-house, and that each movement is manually assembled by a single watchmaker. The brand reported 43 new in-house calibres or movements in a little more than 10 years on an undated official page accessed in 2026.
  • Jaeger-LeCoultre connects manufacture status with bringing watchmaking crafts together and describes watchmakers designing, producing, finishing and ornamenting mechanisms. Its undated official page, accessed in 2026, reports more than 1,400 calibres and more than 430 patents.
  • Ulysse Nardin says it makes all critical components in-house and produces its own oscillators and escapements. Its undated official page, accessed in 2026, reports 38 new in-house movements over the “last 25 years”; because that period is relative, the figure should not be treated as a fixed calendar range.

These figures document what the brands say about their own histories and capabilities. They do not create a shared industry standard for what qualifies as a manufacture.

Why does manufacture status matter?

More control over movement development and production can give a watchmaker greater freedom to shape a calibre around a watch, pursue unusual mechanisms, develop specialised parts or build a coherent technical identity. A. Lange & Söhne says in-house development can enable more individual designs; Blancpain links production control to creative freedom. Those are the brands’ explanations of the advantages they see in their own production models.

For a buyer, the label is most useful as a clue to the watch’s development and production story. It may help explain why a movement has a distinctive architecture or why a brand has invested in particular technical capabilities. Whether those capabilities matter to you depends on the model and what you value in a watch.

What manufacture status does not prove

Manufacture is not a grade for accuracy, reliability, serviceability or value. The official brand accounts cited here describe production and philosophy; they do not establish that manufacture movements outperform sourced movements as a general rule. A movement made largely by an outside specialist can still be the right choice for a particular watch, while an in-house calibre is not automatically superior simply because of its origin.

For a specific watch, compare its published accuracy or certification, movement design, warranty, service arrangements, price and intended use. Look for evidence attached to the model rather than treating “manufacture” as a substitute for those details.

How to compare two watches fairly

Compare the same kinds of facts for each reference. If a detail is not published, treat it as unknown rather than filling the gap with assumptions based on the brand label.

What to compare What to establish
Calibre design Who designed and developed the movement architecture?
Component provenance Which parts come from the brand, an affiliate or an outside specialist?
Finishing Where is movement finishing performed, and by whom?
Assembly and testing Where are the movement and watch assembled, regulated and tested?
Claim scope Does the manufacture claim apply to this exact model and calibre?
Precision evidence What accuracy specification or certification is published for this watch?
Ownership considerations What are the service arrangements, warranty, price and intended use?

For instance, the Pelagos and its Manufacture Calibre MT5612 can be used to investigate TUDOR’s stated relationship with Kenissi and its Le Locle assembly and testing. That makes it an illustration of how to trace a production claim, not proof that manufacture status alone makes the watch a better purchase.
