That is a judgment, not an official industry category: to make it useful, name the comparison group and weigh the whole watch—its price, design, movement, execution, ownership considerations, and availability in the buyer’s market.
What does “underrated” mean for a watch?
Calling a watch underrated is not the same as calling it objectively superior or a bargain. It means its merits appear under-recognized relative to a defined comparison: for example, watches in a similar price range, with a similar movement type, or aimed at the same kind of wearer. The case is strongest when you can say both what the watch does well and why those strengths may be overlooked.

Value is not only a specification count or a movement’s prestige. Patek Philippe discusses value in both financial and emotional terms, alongside technical and aesthetic qualities in watchmaking. That framing is useful for buyers too: a watch may earn its place through its feel, design, or connection with the wearer as well as through measurable features. It does not mean every buyer will value those qualities in the same way. Patek Philippe’s account of its values
Craftsmanship can also affect how people perceive value. A Harvard Business School paper describes how craftsmanship helped distinguish mechanical watches from mass-produced quartz watches and position mechanical watches as craft or art. That helps explain why some buyers value a mechanical watch beyond its timekeeping function; it does not prove that mechanical watches are objectively better value than quartz watches. How to judge whether a watch offers good value
Start with the actual asking price and what the buyer receives at that price. Then consider which qualities matter to the intended wearer: movement, design, materials and execution, and practical ownership. A watch can be a strong fit without leading every specification comparison; a feature that does not matter to a buyer should not count as value just because it looks impressive on a list.
- Compare like with like: use watches with a similar purpose, price context, and movement category rather than comparing unlike models on a single headline specification.
- Separate tangible features from personal appeal: explain which qualities can be checked and which depend on individual taste.
- Account for ownership: consider how the watch is operated and whether service information is available before treating the purchase price as the whole cost.
- Check the buying context: distinguish a current retail price from a secondary-market asking price. An asking price does not establish what a watch actually sold for.
What makes the design worth noticing?
Assess whether the watch is easy to read, whether its proportions work on the intended wearer, and whether the case, dial, and other visible details feel coherent together. Comfort matters too: an appealing design is less compelling if the watch does not suit how someone plans to wear it.

Design also depends on technical decisions. NOMOS says its DUW 3001 movement was designed to keep the Tangente slim as an automatic watch. This is a concrete example of movement architecture serving a design aim—not evidence that the same solution is right for every wearer or that one movement is universally better. Does the movement matter?
Yes, but the useful question is how the movement fits the buyer’s priorities. Automatic, manual-wind, and quartz movements differ in how they operate, and a movement’s dimensions and architecture can influence the finished watch’s design. WatchTime’s overview explains these broad movement categories. WatchTime’s guide to watch movements

- Automatic: consider whether the wearer wants a mechanical watch that winds through wrist motion and whether that operating experience suits their routine.
- Manual-wind: consider whether the wearer is happy to wind the watch by hand as part of its use.
- Quartz: consider whether a battery-powered movement better fits the wearer’s priorities; it should not be dismissed simply because it is not mechanical.
An in-house or proprietary movement may matter to a brand’s technical identity, but the label alone does not establish accuracy, durability, serviceability, or better value. NOMOS describes its research and development in terms of independence, precision, durability, and elegant design; it also says the introduction of its movement in 2014 made the company technologically independent. Those are the manufacturer’s stated aims and account of its development, not an independent comparative finding. NOMOS on research and development
Why availability belongs in the value assessment
A watch’s appeal matters less if the reader cannot obtain the relevant reference through a suitable sales channel. Availability can vary by market and date, so a claim about stock or price should identify the exact model or reference, geography, date, and channel. Check whether the price is current retail or a secondary-market listing, and do not treat an asking price as a confirmed transaction.

Without a date-stamped check for the reader’s market, it is not possible to make a reliable claim that a particular model is currently in stock or available at a stated price. A watch that is compelling on paper but difficult to buy at its intended retail price may be less practical for a buyer than its specifications suggest.
Two examples of how to apply the framework
Swatch Sistem51
Swatch presents the Sistem51 as an automatic watch and describes its design philosophy and movement concept. It can be examined as a design-led automatic watch: ask how its design, movement, execution, price, and local availability fit the intended buyer. The available product description alone does not establish that Sistem51 is objectively underrated, the best value, or available in every market. Swatch’s Sistem51 page

NOMOS Tangente and DUW 3001
NOMOS says the DUW 3001 was designed to keep the Tangente slim while remaining automatic. This shows how a technical choice can support a design goal. It does not establish that the movement is superior overall or that the watch is a better value for every buyer.
A consistent checklist for comparing watches
When comparing two or more specific models, use the same criteria for each and make the comparison date and geography explicit:
- Current price, market, and sales channel
- Movement type, stated performance, and available service context
- Legibility, proportions, comfort, and design coherence
- Materials and execution
- Availability of the exact reference in the buyer’s market
These criteria can support a reasoned comparison, but they do not by themselves justify a ranked list of the best underrated watches. That would require current, model-specific evidence for the watches and criteria being ranked.
