What AP says is new in Calibre 8100
Audemars Piguet identifies the reset mechanism as the calibre’s central innovation. In its RD#5 announcement, the brand says: “Unveiled for the first time, Calibre 8100 reimagines a chronograph reset mechanism that has remained largely unchanged for 150 years.” The 150-year comparison is AP’s historical framing.
Resetting a chronograph returns its elapsed-time indications to zero. AP says its patented mechanism optimizes the storage and release of energy for that action. The available official description explains the intended architecture and effect, but does not publish independent measurements showing a gain in accuracy, reliability, or service life.
How the mechanism fits into the chronograph
The RD#5 is a flyback chronograph: its chronograph can be reset and restarted in one operation rather than requiring a separate stop, reset, and restart sequence. AP’s French technical description identifies a vertical clutch and column wheel alongside the patented reset mechanism. These are distinct parts of the movement’s chronograph architecture; the reset-system claim is specifically about energy storage and release. See the official technical description.

The watch also combines the chronograph with a flying tourbillon. That pairing makes the RD#5 a complicated Royal Oak, but it does not by itself establish that the reset mechanism is more accurate or durable than another chronograph. AP’s published material presents a design innovation, not a like-for-like performance comparison.
What changes for the wearer
AP highlights touch-sensitive pushers and an instantaneous jump minute counter as user-facing features. The pushers are intended to respond with very short travel and comparatively light force, while the minute counter advances instantaneously rather than gradually. These are interaction and display characteristics, not a substitute for independently measured timing performance.
In a Japan announcement dated October 1, 2025, AP describes a pusher design target of 0.3 mm of travel and approximately 300 g of actuation force. The same announcement says the project took five years and traces the pusher concept to smartphone side buttons. AP contrasts those targets with conventional chronograph pushers, which it says typically require more than 1 mm of travel and about 1.5 kg of force. These are manufacturer-stated design figures and comparisons, not independently tested, industry-wide results.
The watch that introduces Calibre 8100
Calibre 8100 debuted in the Royal Oak “Jumbo” Extra-Thin Selfwinding Flying Tourbillon Chronograph RD#5, reference 26545XT.OO.1240XT.01. AP’s product listing specifies a 39 mm case made from titanium and bulk metallic glass (BMG), and an edition limited to 150 pieces. The French technical page identifies the same 39 mm diameter.

“Jumbo” is part of the model name; the product listing’s stated case diameter is 39 mm. The 150-piece limit is the edition size shown by AP, not an indication of current availability.

AP’s claim is specific: it says Calibre 8100 rethinks the chronograph reset mechanism and its energy management, and pairs that mechanism with a different pusher experience. It does not mean that chronographs as a category have been replaced, nor does the published description establish a quantified performance advantage over competing movements.

AP has a longer chronograph history, but its Royal Oak Offshore lineage should not be confused with Calibre 8100. The brand’s archive says the Offshore launched in 1993 and describes an early chronograph using Calibre 2126/2840, a Jaeger-LeCoultre base movement with Dubois Dépraz chronograph work. That is a different collection and movement lineage, not a direct predecessor to the RD#5 calibre. AP’s Offshore history provides that historical context.
