Prospex is Seiko’s collection name, not a water-resistance rating. The water-resistance marking and diver classification apply to each individual watch, so check the model’s specifications, case-back marking, and manual. Seiko lists the Prospex Sea SRPE27, for example, as “200m / 660ft diver’s”—but that specification does not apply to every Prospex watch.
What “Prospex” means—and what it does not
Prospex identifies a Seiko collection. It does not, on its own, tell you whether a watch is suitable for swimming, scuba diving, or saturation diving. Those details depend on the specific model’s marking and instructions.
For a concrete example, Seiko’s US listing identifies the SRPE27 as a Prospex Sea watch with “200m / 660ft diver’s” water resistance and a unidirectional rotating bezel. This is one model’s specification, not a rating shared by the whole collection.
How Seiko’s water-resistance categories differ
Seiko’s water-resistance FAQ describes “preferable conditions of use” for each marking. Its table distinguishes ordinary BAR-rated watches from watches identified as diver’s watches. A number alone is not enough to treat those categories as interchangeable.

This is Seiko’s manufacturer guidance, not an independent determination that a particular watch is safe at the printed depth in every circumstance. Use the model’s own instructions and account for the watch’s present condition. Seiko directs owners to check the water-resistance marking on the back of their watch. Can you scuba dive with a Seiko Prospex 200m watch?
Seiko’s table marks its “Diver’s Watch 200 meters” category as acceptable for scuba diving. If your particular Prospex model is marked as a 200-meter diver’s watch, follow that model’s manual and make sure the watch is in suitable condition. Do not infer scuba suitability merely from “Prospex” or from an ordinary BAR figure.

The printed depth is not a blanket real-world depth guarantee. The category tells you how Seiko classifies the watch’s use; it does not remove the need to follow its instructions or consider wear, damage, and maintenance.
Does a 200m rating mean a Seiko can be used for saturation diving?
No. Seiko separates the “Diver’s Watch 200 meters” category, which its table lists for scuba diving, from “Professional Diver’s Watch 1,000 meters,” which it lists for saturation diving. Do not treat a 200-meter diver’s marking as approval for saturation diving.

Why an older or damaged watch may need inspection
Seiko says a watch’s water resistance “is not permanently guaranteed.” It identifies aging gaskets and parts deformed by accidental shock as possible causes of reduced resistance. That makes condition especially important when assessing an older, second-hand, or damaged watch.
- After use in ocean water, rinse the watch with fresh water and dry it.
- Do not wash it directly under running water.
- Do not operate the crown while it is pulled out.
- Seiko recommends periodic overhaul service to check water resistance.

What Seiko’s history says about diver-watch standards
Seiko’s history page says its first diver’s watch was introduced in 1965. It also records that “In 1996, ISO6425 with annex, about diver’s watches for mixed gas diving, was issued.” This is Seiko’s historical account; it is not a current ISO requirements checklist, nor does it establish which clauses a particular present-day Prospex model meets.
