What “Swiss Made” Means on a Watch—and the Culture Behind It

Swiss Made is a regulated origin claim with separate requirements for the movement and complete watch—not a promise that every part is Swiss or that a watch has a particular quality level. Here’s how the rules connect to Switzerland’s craft, towns and innovation.

“Swiss Made” on a watch is a regulated origin claim, not simply a statement that the watch was assembled in Switzerland. Under rules effective since 1 January 2017, a qualifying watch must meet requirements for its movement, casing, final inspection, technical development and Swiss-generated manufacturing costs. The label does not mean every component is Swiss, nor does it guarantee a particular quality grade, price or amount of hand-finishing.

What does “Swiss Made” mean on a watch?

For watches, “Swiss Made” is a protected geographical indication with defined legal criteria. The Swiss Federal Institute of Intellectual Property (IPI) says the revised ordinance took effect on 1 January 2017 to strengthen the geographical indication “Swiss” for watches and movements under Switzerland’s “Swissness” legislation. The IPI’s watch-industry guidance sets out conditions for both the complete watch and its movement.

The rules distinguish the finished watch from the movement inside it. A Swiss movement is required, but that alone does not make the complete watch Swiss Made.

Requirements for the complete watch

  • It must contain a Swiss movement.
  • It must be cased in Switzerland.
  • The manufacturer must carry out the final inspection in Switzerland.
  • At least 60% of its manufacturing costs must be generated in Switzerland.
  • Its technical development must take place in Switzerland.

Additional requirements for the movement

The movement has its own origin tests. At least 60% of the costs to manufacture it must be generated in Switzerland. In addition, Swiss-made constituent parts—excluding assembly cost—must make up at least 50% of the value of all constituent parts. These are distinct tests: the movement’s cost threshold and component-value threshold do not replace the complete watch’s requirements.

The Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry FH also summarizes the main criteria as a Swiss movement, Swiss casing, final inspection in Switzerland and a minimum 60% Swiss value in its Swiss Made overview.

Does Swiss Made mean every part is made in Switzerland?

No. The rules use defined cost and movement-component-value calculations; they do not require every physical component to originate in Switzerland. Some parts may come from elsewhere while the watch still qualifies, provided it meets all applicable criteria. The label therefore describes compliance with an origin standard, not a component-by-component guarantee.

It also does not certify a specific level of quality, prestige, price, accuracy, durability or handwork. Those may matter when comparing watches, but they are not established by the Swiss Made designation itself. For a purchase, assess the movement type, materials, service arrangements, design, price and any brand-specific quality controls separately.

What Swiss watchmaking culture adds to the label

The legal origin claim sits within a much broader craft and industrial tradition. House of Switzerland describes watchmaking as a defining practice in several regions and highlights fine manual skills such as bevelling and pivoting. These techniques depend on training and dexterity, and the knowledge is preserved and adapted over time. That tradition should not be mistaken for a claim that every modern Swiss watch is made entirely by hand.

Watchmaking shaped towns as well as workshops

La Chaux-de-Fonds and Le Locle offer a visible example of the connection between watchmaking and place. Their urban ensemble is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site; its architecture and planning reflect the development of watchmaking towns from the late 18th century onward. The built environment is part of the industry’s history, not just a backdrop to it.

UNESCO describes the sites and their significance in its listing for La Chaux-de-Fonds / Le Locle, Watchmaking Town Planning.

Innovation is part of the tradition

Swiss watchmaking culture is not only about preserving old skills. House of Switzerland’s account of the Swatch describes how Elmar Mock and watchmaker Jacques Müller co-invented the watch in 1980, using ultrasonic welding technology, with support from ETA’s then-head Ernst Thomke. Presented as a design-led analogue watch for a broad consumer market, Swatch marked a new chapter after years of crisis. The story illustrates how technical choices, manufacturing and design can reshape what Swiss watchmaking means in practice.

House of Switzerland recounts this episode in its history of the Swatch.

How significant is the Swiss watch industry today?

Swiss watchmaking remains economically significant, though recent export figures show contraction. The Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry FH reported that in 2025 Switzerland exported watches worth CHF 25.6 billion, down 1.7% from 2024, and exported 14.6 million watches, down 4.8%. These are export measures—not retail sales or final consumer spending—and the comparison is with the previous calendar year. The figures were published by the FH in 2026 in its Swiss watch industry statistics.

How to use the label when choosing a watch

Think of Swiss Made as a useful, bounded piece of information: it tells you that a watch meets a set of Swiss origin rules. It does not answer every question about the watch. Use the label alongside practical checks that matter to you:
