What is the Hillary Tenzing Explorer?
“Hillary Tenzing Edition” refers to the Hillary Tenzing Explorer (HTE), a commemorative package initiated by Philipp Stahl, with Peter Hillary and Jamling Tenzing Norgay involved. Christie’s said it was offered for the benefit of the Hillary and Tenzing family foundations and explicitly described the project as “not associated with the Rolex organization.” Christie’s 2011 announcement therefore supports describing it as an independent homage, not an official Rolex release.

What watches and items were in the package?
The centerpiece was a trio of Rolex Explorer watches, reported in 36 mm, 39 mm, and 42 mm sizes by Europa Star in February 2012. The three-watch set was presented in a handcrafted expedition crate.

Christie’s catalogued the numbered set 88/88 with signed and numbered paperwork and commemorative objects. Its listed contents included postal covers, a signed New Zealand five-dollar note, and Everest: Summit of Achievement by Stephen Venables. The full record is in Christie’s lot 5431179.

How many sets were made, and what did one sell for?
Europa Star reported a limited run of 88 packages. It also reported that set 88/88 sold at Christie’s Geneva in May 2011 for $104,568, with proceeds going entirely to the Hillary and Tenzing family foundations. That is a historical auction result, not a current valuation or a price estimate for another set.
What is the Rolex connection to the 1953 Everest expedition?
Rolex’s official account of its 1953 Everest history says Oyster Perpetual watches were among the British expedition’s equipment. It quotes the expedition assessment: “Rolex Oyster watches performed splendidly, and we have indeed come to look upon Rolex Oysters as an important part of high-climbing equipment.”

This establishes a historical connection between Rolex Oyster watches and the expedition. It does not identify the exact watch reference worn at the summit, nor does it make the HTE a Rolex-commissioned or endorsed edition. The HTE’s commemorative name should not be taken to mean that an HTE-marked watch was worn on the 1953 summit.
What should a buyer verify?
The HTE was a complete numbered collector package, not simply a standard Explorer with an edition name. If assessing a claimed set, compare its provenance and documentation with Christie’s record, and verify the exact watch references, case sizes, condition, originality, service history, and completeness of the crate and memorabilia. Seek independent authentication before a purchase.

If you are instead looking for a Rolex Explorer watch, treat that as a separate purchase: a standard Explorer does not reproduce the HTE package. Confirm the specific reference and current availability with the seller; the historical sources establish neither a present retail offering nor a current market price for the HTE.
