Before paying, verify the exact film, date and local start time, venue, screening format, ticket type, and official purchase channel. Then check the event’s own rules for refunds, arrival, seating, age suitability, accessibility, and how to present the ticket. Film festivals do not share one standard ticket policy, so rely on the listing and terms for the screening you plan to attend.
Confirm that the ticket covers the screening you want
Start with the festival’s official listing for the specific screening. Check the film title, date, local start time, venue, language or subtitle details, and whether the event is a standard screening, special event, or ceremony. Confirm that the ticket category you select gives access to that event.

Do not assume a pass, badge, invitation, or package automatically replaces a screening reservation. Rules can differ by festival, venue, and event. For example, the Cannes FAQ says its tickets and badges apply to listed Official Selection venues, and its ticket office is available only to people with relevant accreditation. Check the current event listing and ticket terms rather than applying that example to another festival. Cannes Festival FAQ

Read the terms before checkout, not after a change of plans. Look for the refund deadline, whether exchanges are allowed, how to request a refund, and what happens if the festival cancels or interrupts the screening.

Check arrival, queues, seating, and late-entry rules
A ticket may not mean you can arrive at the start time and walk straight in. Check whether seats are assigned, whether you need to join a particular line, how early ticket holders must arrive, and whether late entry is allowed. Also look for capacity limits or any language saying admission is not guaranteed.

Review age suitability and accessibility for the film and venue
Look for an age rating or festival guidance on the film’s page, then check the venue’s access information. If you are attending with a minor, do not assume the festival has assigned a formal classification: Cannes notes that its films may not yet have age classifications and asks an accompanying adult to assess suitability. It also says infants are not allowed in screening rooms. Cannes Festival FAQ
Accessibility arrangements can vary between theaters, even within one festival. Tokyo TIFF says wheelchair procedures and spaces vary by theater. Thessaloniki lists accessible venues and features that include audio description and subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing (SDH). Check the specific venue and screening, and contact the festival or venue before booking if the published information does not answer your access question. Know how you will show the ticket
Check whether entry requires a mobile ticket, printed ticket, account or app access, or more than one credential. Cannes says a QR code is compulsory for admission and can be displayed on a smartphone; it recommends downloading the code to Wallet if connectivity at the entrance is poor. Cannes Festival FAQ
If your festival allows a phone ticket, save or download it using the organizer’s approved method and make sure your device can display it at entry. Keeping your phone charged is sensible preparation, but it is not a stated festival requirement.

Compare screenings before choosing
If a film has multiple showings, compare the practical details as well as the start time. A different venue may change travel time or accessibility arrangements; an event listed as a special screening may have different admission mechanics from a standard showing.
- Venue and access: location, travel needs, accessibility features, and any venue-specific procedures.
- Screening details: date, local start time, language or subtitle format, and whether the event is a screening, ceremony, or special event.
- Admission: assigned or unassigned seating, queue instructions, arrival deadline, late-entry policy, and capacity limits.
- Ticket risk: refund and exchange terms, cancellation exceptions, and restrictions tied to the ticket category.
- Ticket format: mobile QR code, printed ticket, account or app access, and whether a pass or accreditation is also required.
- Age and accessibility: age guidance for the film and access details for the specific venue.
Use this pre-booking checklist
- Open the festival’s official page for the exact screening and confirm the film, date, local start time, venue, screening type, language or subtitles, and ticket category.
- Confirm that the purchase channel is official and that the ticket covers that particular screening. Check separately whether a pass, badge, or package requires a reservation.
- Read the refund, exchange, and cancellation terms. Note any deadline and the method required to request a refund or exchange.
- Check seating, queue, arrival, late-entry, and capacity rules so you know when and where to report.
- Review age guidance and venue accessibility information. Ask the festival or venue about unresolved access needs before buying.
- Confirm how the ticket must be presented. If it is digital, save it in an approved format and ensure you can display it at the entrance.
What festival ticket figures can—and cannot—tell you
Festival-specific numbers should not be mistaken for general predictions. Cannes reported that 15,000 seats were allocated through its last-minute queues in 2024. That is a historical Cannes figure, not an estimate of walk-up availability at other festivals or a guarantee that a particular screening will have a place. Cannes Festival FAQ
