A jumping-hour watch replaces the usual sweeping hour hand with an hour that changes in one step at the hour boundary. Before buying one, check how its display works for you, what movement and power reserve it uses, whether the case fits, and whether its water resistance and service support suit your needs. Specifications vary by reference, so compare exact models rather than treating the complication as a single standard design.
How a jumping-hour display works
In a conventional watch, the hour hand moves gradually around the dial. In a jumping-hour watch, the hour appears in a window or on a numbered disc or hand and advances when the 60th minute of the current hour ends. Hodinkee explains the display and distinguishes it from a continuously moving hour hand.

Mechanical designs need to accumulate and release energy to make the change. Chrono24 describes one disc mechanism that stores energy during the hour and releases it at the transition. Designs differ, so this is a general explanation rather than a specification for every watch. Some watches in the broader jumping-hours family also jump the minutes; that is a separate display choice.
What to check before you buy
Display layout and legibility
Find out whether the hour is shown by a numeral disc or a jumping hand, where the hour aperture sits, and how minutes are displayed. Some watches use separate windows for hours and minutes; others combine a jumping hour with a conventional minute hand or another layout. Try reading the time quickly in the lighting and viewing conditions you expect to encounter. If possible, watch the hour change so you can see how the transition looks and sounds.

Movement, winding and power reserve
Read the exact movement specification, including the movement or module name, any base calibre, winding type and stated power reserve. A jumping-hour mechanism may be an integrated movement or an added module, and the complication alone does not establish how the rest of the watch is built or how it performs. Check whether the manufacturer publishes a timing tolerance; if it does, treat it as a specification, not an independent comparative test.
Case fit and proportions
Compare the case diameter, thickness, lug-to-lug length, crown position and strap or bracelet width. The aperture and surrounding dial layout can also affect how large or balanced the watch looks. Published dimensions help narrow your choices, but they cannot determine personal fit; try the exact watch on your wrist if possible.

Water resistance and intended use
Check the rating and the manufacturer’s guidance for the exact reference rather than assuming that a dressy-looking case or a particular movement makes the watch suitable for water. The Bremont and Christopher Ward examples below are each specified at 3 ATM/30 metres. That rating alone is not a promise that either watch is suitable for swimming.
Warranty, servicing and parts
Before paying, ask who can service the exact calibre and any jumping-hour module, where service is available in your region, what the warranty covers, and whether parts are available. Audemars Piguet directs owners to its boutiques for expert servicing. The cited manufacturer information does not establish a universal service interval, cost, turnaround time or regional parts availability.

How to compare two watches fairly
Compare exact references, not just brands or complication names. Put the features that matter to your use side by side:
