Before paying for one, confirm the reference and movement, watch every function work, and ask for dated service and water-resistance evidence for that specific watch. NOMOS’s published specifications describe the model as designed. They cannot establish whether a particular watch is authentic, currently sealed, accurate, or still covered by warranty.
Confirm you are looking at reference 1101
NOMOS’s Metro Date Power Reserve is reference 1101. It uses the manually wound DUW 4401 caliber, which drives a date display and a power-reserve indicator. NOMOS credits the design to Mark Braun.

The most common mix-up is with the Metro 38 Date, a different reference that uses a different movement. A seller’s shorthand such as “Metro Date” or “Metro 38” is not enough. Check the reference printed on the paperwork and, where accessible, the reference engraved or stamped on the watch itself, then match the movement to the reference.
| Item | Metro Date Power Reserve | Metro 38 Date |
|---|---|---|
| Reference | 1101 | 1102 |

Compare the physical details with the official specification
NOMOS’s current product page for reference 1101 gives the following figures. Use them to check that the watch matches the model, and to judge whether it will sit well on your wrist.
#1 Best Overall
- Featuring a Black Band, Silver-tone Case, Scratch Resistant Sapphire Crystal
| Feature | NOMOS specification for 1101 |
|---|---|
| Case diameter | 37 mm |
| Lug-to-lug | 43.6 mm |
| Lug width | 18 mm |
| Case height | Not stated as a single figure. Regional renderings of the product page differ, so do not quote one height as universal. |
| Case material | Stainless steel |
| Front crystal | Domed sapphire |
| Caseback | Sapphire crystal |
| Winding | Manual |
| Water resistance | 5 atm, which NOMOS labels splash-proof |
The 18 mm lug width matters if you plan to change the strap, because a replacement must fit that width exactly. The 43.6 mm lug-to-lug distance determines how much of the strap sits over the wrist, so measure it against your own wrist if you can. NOMOS’s older data sheet carries an October 2018 status, so the current product page should be treated as the reference.
Check the movement and the functions
NOMOS lists the DUW 4401 with date and power-reserve indicators, stop-seconds, 23 jewels, adjustment in six positions, and a power reserve of up to 42 hours. These are manufacturer specifications for the caliber. They tell you what the watch should do, not how this particular example performs.
Demonstrate winding, running and the displays
Ask the seller to carry out the following steps on the watch, in front of you or on a live video call with clear close-ups.
- Wind the watch by hand from a low reserve if possible, and note whether the crown turns smoothly without grinding or excessive play.
- Set the time forward and back, and watch the date display for any unexpected change (see the next section).
- Confirm the date changes cleanly at the correct point and is correctly aligned in its window.
- Confirm the power-reserve indicator moves as the watch winds down and reads sensibly after a full wind.
- If the seller can show it, confirm that stop-seconds halts the seconds hand and that it restarts cleanly.
- Ask how long the watch runs after a full wind, and treat the answer as a preliminary check only.
Set the time without changing the date
NOMOS’s hand-wound watch instruction manual, dated October 2025, warns about this exact problem. It states: “When setting the time on watches with the DUW 4101 and DUW 4401 date calibers, be careful not to accidentally change the date.” The manual describes date adjustment by moving the hands between 8 and 1, with the date changing as the hands advance to 1.

Do not force the crown or experiment without the manual. Ask the seller to set the time while you watch, or have a qualified watchmaker demonstrate the correct method.
Treat the 42-hour figure as a specification
Up to 42 hours is the maximum power reserve NOMOS states for the DUW 4401. A seller’s timed run is informal and cannot confirm that the watch reaches 42 hours. Only an independent test of this watch can show its actual reserve.
Ask for service history and understand the cost
NOMOS’s current FAQ advises that mechanical watches be completely cleaned and inspected after a few years, and at most five years after the previous service. A used 1101 with no documented service should be treated as needing one.
Published service figures
| Work | NOMOS published figure | Conditions stated by NOMOS |
|---|---|---|
| Complete service, DUW 4401/Delta | EUR 380 | Includes disassembly, cleaning, replacement of worn parts, timing and function checks, adjustment in six positions, case work, seals and water-resistance restoration, and a final check lasting several days |
| Minor repair, DUW 4401/Delta | EUR 165 | Applies when a watch less than three years old is not functioning properly |
These are published list figures, not a quote for a specific watch, and they may not match your local cost. NOMOS states that extra defective parts may be charged, and that an assessment requires seeing the watch. Expect the final cost to rise if the crown, winding stem, gaskets or case tube need replacing.

What to request from the seller
- An itemized, dated service record showing whether NOMOS or another watchmaker performed the work.
- A description of any parts replaced, and the reason for each replacement.
- Proof of any water-resistance testing done during the service.
Test water resistance before you rely on it
NOMOS rates the reference 1101 at 5 atm and calls it splash-proof. That rating describes the watch as designed. It does not show that a used example still seals properly after years of wear or after a previous opening. Ask for a recent pressure-test certificate, or arrange a test with a qualified watchmaker, and avoid water exposure until it has been confirmed.
Inspect the case, dial and strap at screening level
Ask for well-lit, sharp photographs of the dial, hands, crystal, case edges, lugs, crown, caseback and strap. Look for:
- Cracks, chips or impact marks on the sapphire crystal or caseback.
- Corrosion, deep scratches or polishing that has softened the case edges, which can indicate refinishing.
- Loose lugs, a wobbling crown, or hands that touch the dial.
- Any difference between the listing and the features described above.
Photographs can only screen for visible problems. They cannot show the internal condition of the movement or confirm originality.
Verify provenance and paperwork
Request the original purchase documentation, any warranty card, service receipts and a clear caseback photograph. A box or card supports provenance but does not establish authenticity on its own.

If you cannot resolve doubts through the seller’s documents and your own inspection, ask NOMOS or a qualified watchmaker to examine the watch before you pay. Whether a warranty transfers to a second owner is also not stated in the material used for this guide, so ask the seller and NOMOS directly.
Price the whole purchase, not just the listing
No reliable, current used-market price range for reference 1101 could be established from NOMOS’s published material, and NOMOS’s retail prices are not a substitute for used sales. Compare recent sold listings for the same reference and condition, then add the costs most likely to follow:
- A complete service if the watch has no recent documented service, at NOMOS’s published EUR 380 figure or a local watchmaker’s quote.
- A replacement strap sized to the 18 mm lug width, if the existing one is worn or unsuitable.
- Repairs for any damaged or replaced parts identified in the inspection.
Choose the listing whose documentation, condition and seller terms are strongest, even if its asking price is higher, because undocumented work and unknown history are the costs most likely to exceed the savings.
