For a watch you wear often, protect it with a short routine after each wear and a stable storage spot for the times it rests. Wipe off sweat and moisture with a soft cloth, let any leather or fabric strap dry, then keep the watch in a clean, dry, ventilated place that is cool and away from magnets and direct sunlight. The original box, a similar box, or a protective pouch is a sensible container for longer breaks from the wrist. The exact details for winding, cleaning, and water exposure depend on the model, so the manufacturer’s instructions for your watch always take priority.
A between-wear routine that takes under a minute
Most of the damage a regularly worn watch picks up comes from moisture and grime left on the case and strap, not from the hours it spends in a drawer. Casio’s care guidance tells owners to wipe a watch free of dirt, sweat, and moisture before long-term storage, and it warns that wet leather or resin components can transfer color or deteriorate. Making that wipe a habit is the cheapest protection you can give a watch.
- Wipe the case, crystal, and bracelet or strap with a soft, dry cloth after sweating or exposure to rain or other moisture. A microfiber cloth works well for this.
- Let a leather or fabric strap dry completely before you put the watch away. Do not store a damp strap in a closed box or pouch.
- Confirm the crown is fully pushed in or screwed down on a water-resistant model before returning it to storage.
- Place the watch in its storage spot, separated from objects that could scratch the case or crystal.
Where to keep a watch that is not on your wrist
Manufacturers agree on the broad conditions: dry, ventilated, moderate temperature, and away from magnets and sunlight. They differ on how much detail they give, so the table below shows what each source actually states.
| Source | Recommended conditions | Recommended container | Other storage points |
|---|---|---|---|
| Seiko (official customer-service FAQ) | Well-ventilated, dust-free place that is not too humid or too hot or cold | The box received at purchase, or a similar box, for long periods without wear | Keep away from magnetic exposure (see below) |
| TAG Heuer (official FAQ) | Cool, dry location away from direct sunlight and strong magnets | A protective box or pouch for long-term storage | Magnetism can affect the hairspring |
| Casio (official care instructions) | Cool, dry place, after wiping the watch clean | Not stated | Wet leather or resin components can transfer color or deteriorate |
| Cartier (official care page) | Not stated for storage location | Not stated | Keep away from magnetic sources; avoid water or other liquids on leather straps |
| Hamilton (official care page) | Not stated for storage location | Not stated | Aging and knocks can impair water resistance |
Original box, protective box, or pouch
Seiko’s guidance points to the box the watch came in, or one like it, when a watch will be out of use for a long time. That option keeps the case, dial, and bracelet in the shape the maker designed around. A dedicated protective box or a padded pouch, as TAG Heuer suggests for long-term storage, works the same way for watches that never came with a box. Choose the container for the job: a box protects against bumps on a shelf, while a pouch is lighter and easier to slip into a travel bag.

What a container does not do
A box or pouch separates the watch from knocks and scratches. It does not, on its own, control humidity or block a magnetic field. Do not assume a storage product shields the movement from magnets or keeps the air dry unless the product itself states that.
Keep the watch away from magnets
Magnetism is one of the few storage risks that can change how a watch keeps time. Seiko states that magnetic exposure can cause a watch to gain or lose time, and that a mechanical watch may stay magnetized after it has been removed from the source. TAG Heuer explains that magnetism can affect the hairspring, the fine spring that regulates the balance.

In practice, do not store a watch on top of a speaker, next to a magnetic clasp on a bag or accessory, or in a case that closes with a strong magnet. If the watch begins to run noticeably fast or slow after a magnetic exposure, take it to an authorized service center rather than trying to correct it yourself.
Water resistance is not permanent
A watch’s water resistance is set at the factory and degrades over time. TAG Heuer’s official water-resistance FAQ says that a watch’s water resistance cannot be permanently guaranteed, and that aging gaskets or impacts can affect it. Hamilton’s care guidance similarly notes that aging and knocks can impair water resistance.

Check the rating printed on your watch or in its manual and treat it as the upper limit, not a promise. After a hard knock, after a battery or crystal change, or whenever the gaskets are due, have the water resistance checked professionally. The recommended checking frequency for each brand is listed in the service table below.
Winding a mechanical watch you do not wear every day
Cartier’s care page says that a mechanical watch should be wound regularly even when it is not worn. TAG Heuer gives winding instructions for its own automatic watches, and Breguet directs owners to learn the correct winding routine for their particular model. Because these instructions differ, follow the manual for your watch rather than a generic schedule.

Winding is not required for every collectible watch. Quartz movements do not need it, and not every automatic needs a winder. If you own a winder, check the manual for your model before using it.

Cartier recommends a microfiber cloth or a soft-bristled toothbrush with warm water for the case and metal bracelet, and it warns against immersing the watch. Those steps are a reasonable starting point for many steel watches, but they are not universal. Before you use water, soap, or a brush on any watch, read the model’s official instructions, especially for leather straps and for watches with unusual finishes or materials.

Service intervals: brand guidance, not a universal rule
Several manufacturers publish intervals for overhauls, water-resistance checks, and functional checks. The table lists each one with the brand and the item it applies to. None of the brand pages in this comparison gives a publication year, so treat these as the current guidance each maker publishes.
| Brand | Check or service | Recommended interval | Applies to |
|---|---|---|---|
| TAG Heuer | Overhaul | Approximately every five to six years | Watches in regular use, per the TAG Heuer care page |
| TAG Heuer | Water-resistance testing | Every two years | Watches regularly exposed to water, per the TAG Heuer FAQ |
| Cartier | Functional check | Every six years | Per the Cartier care page |
| Breguet | Water-resistance check | Every year | Watches often exposed to water or moisture, per the Breguet care page |
These figures are manufacturer recommendations for each brand’s own watches. They are not statistics on how collectible watches age, and they do not set a schedule that applies to every watch. A watch that sees heavy use, or one with a history of water exposure, may warrant a check sooner than the brand’s default.
Choosing a storage box or pouch
If you buy a storage product, measure your watch before you shop, and check the following points against the product description:
- The watch fits without forcing the bracelet or strap into a curve it does not normally take.
- The watch is separated from other objects that could scratch the case or crystal.
- The space stays dry and ventilated, and the product does not trap moisture from a damp strap.
- The container can be placed away from magnets and direct sunlight.
Dimensions and materials vary widely, and no single product is the right choice for every watch, so use these points as a checklist rather than a ranking.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhen to send the watch to a service center
- The watch starts gaining or losing time noticeably after exposure to a magnetic source.
- Water has entered the case, or the crystal, crown, or gaskets have been damaged.
- The brand’s interval for an overhaul or water-resistance check has passed.
- A watch has taken a hard knock, even if it still appears to run normally.
Use an authorized service center for these checks. Authorized centers can test water resistance and inspect the movement against the manufacturer’s own specifications.
